Post by Blue Mastiff »

Napoli fully realized their potential on Sunday, coming of age in a hard fought 0-0 draw with Brescia. Mazzarri’s heroes never gave up and played on right until the 95th minute, almost losing against a powerful Brescia side who were in Serie B last season and will likely return there for the next campaign. But Napoli’s players were not at all intimidated, and in the comforts of the San Paolo, the Partenopei fought, scrambled, and bled for 95 minutes in earning a precious point. Other teams might be winning and leaning towards Europe, but at least Napoli didn’t lose this important relegation six pointer.

OK, enough with the sarcasm. Here are some real numbers to look at – try to figure out what they mean before I reveal the secret below.

Inter 8, Udinese 8, Roma 7, Genoa 7, Milan 6, Cesena 6, Bologna 5, Lecce 5, Fiorentina 4, Parma 4, Lazio 3, Cagliari 3, Sampdoria 2, Catania 2, Brescia 2, Napoli 1, Chievo 1, Bari 1, Palermo 0, Juventus 0.

This is each team’s goals scored for the last 3 Serie A rounds. The only sides worse than Napoli are Palermo and Juve, who were both shut out 3 straight times. Even more shocking is that in those three rounds, Napoli had two home games – against 16th place Catania and 19th place Brescia. Getting shut out away to Milan isn’t a big deal, but scoring 1 total goal in those three games is unacceptable.

I will not accept the absence of Lavezzi as a legitimate justification. Of course he would have improved Napoli’s offence if he had been playing, but that’s not the point. Even if you take Lavezzi out of Napoli’s lineup, they should still be able to score piles of goals against Catania and Brescia at home. And I’ve made this point before – if Napoli can’t win if one player is missing from the starting 11, there’s no point in playing in Europe next season. Not even the Europa League. Most Europa League teams, at this point in the season, can win their home games against teams in the bottom 1/4 of the table.

I will also not accept refereeing errors as a legitimate excuse. Sure, if you look at each game there may have been a call or two that didn’t go Napoli’s way. But what about the other 89 minutes in each contest? How is the difference between winning and not winning down to whether the ref makes a controversial call in Napoli’s favour or not? Against Brescia there were two controversial non-penalties – one on Maggio in the first half, and one on Mascara in the second half. But Napoli should still be able to score from open play against Brescia, and yet they couldn’t.

Mazzarri’s outburst that got him ejected on Sunday also got him a one-match ban, and I’m glad he won’t be managing as we won’t have to hear him complain about the ref when there are so many problems with Napoli’s tactics. Aronica and Dossena are also suspended, so I can reveal Napoli’s lineup right now, as Mazzarri or his assistants will never try anything creative.

De Sanctis – Campagnaro, Canna, Ruiz – Maggio, Pazienza, Gargano, Zuniga – Hamsik, Lavezzi – Cavani

Now that I’ve got my little rant out of the way, let’s take a look at the Brescia highlights. Contrary to last week, Napoli did get a shot on net this week.

Regarding the non-penalties, I was disappointed in the calls for different reasons. I’ve seen the hip-check on Maggio given for a penalty before, and other times not given. It’s a judgment call that can go either way. But a few minutes before that incident Cavani was called for a foul when he bumped a Brescia defender inside the 18 yard box. It cannot be a foul for an attacking player but not for a defending player. The ref has to be consistent in applying the rules.

The second half non-call on Mascara was more of a penalty in my opinion. It’s true that Mascara had his back towards then net and his touch on the ball didn’t bring the play closer to goal, but that has to get called especially since Brescia had the first controversial one go in their favour. The Brescia defender was late getting there and made no contact with the ball, taking Mascara down and out of the play. I have no idea how the ref saw that as a foul by Mascara rather than a foul on Mascara. In any case, Napoli should have been up a couple of goals by the 82′ mark or whenever it happened, so to blame the entire game on the one minute of action isn’t very productive.

Reagrding Brescia, two of their players that I’ve never heard of were impressive: keeper Michele Arcari and Swiss (Ticino) defender Gaetano Berardi. Arcari is a 32 year old journeyman who has played for Cremonese 3 times, Lecco twice, and from 2002 – 2005 – when Arcari was 24-27 years old – he was at a team called Pizzighettone. Holding Napoli scoreless may have been his greatest ever football achievement. Berardi is a 22 year old defender who has made at least one appearance for Switzerland’s U-21 side. He’s been on Brescia’s books since 2006, and he is another testament to Brescia’s great youth system that gave us Hamsik and Santacroce.

A couple more notes on the game. When Pazienza was substituted, I was stunned because I had no idea he was even playing. Did anybody see him out there? Instead of using two defensive mids against a team that generally doesn’t attack much, why not have another option for the centre of midfield?? Oh wait, Mazzarri doesn’t see football that way. Also, when Lucarelli came on, he actually improved Napoli’s offence slightly because he got close to the Brescia goal and tried to win the ball in a good position. Every other Napoli player was obsessed with passing the ball out wide so Maggio or Dossena could swing a cross in. Even when Napoli had the ball at the top of the 18 yard box – an ideal attacking position with so many creative possibilities – Napoli still brought the ball away from the danger area and out wide where Brescia’s defenders could wait and pick out any crosses. The only exception was Hamsik who made some intelligent runs that tried to pry open Brescia’s defence.

Here are the ratings. Napoli’s best player might have been De Sanctis, who needed to make a number of saves as Brescia were more efficient attacking than Napoli

De Sanctis: 7.0
Campagnaro: 6.5
Cannavaro: 6.0
Aronica: 5.5 – someone tell him you can’t handle the ball!
Maggio: 6.5
Pazienza: 5.5
Gargano: 5.0 – last minute giveaway almost cost Napoli a point
Dossena: 5.5
Hamsik: 7.0
Zuniga: 6.0 – with Zuniga as trequartista, no wonder Cavani has to play right back at times.
Cavani: 5.5

Mazzarri: 4.5

Subs: Mascara 6.0, Lucarelli 6.5, Yebda 6.0

I gave the subs generous ratings, because they could not be any worse than the starters.

As Alex pointed out, it’s squeaky bum time as Napoli will try to scrape out wins the rest of the season. Playing good, tactically strong calcio is beyond Mazzarri so we’ll have to rely on heroic one goal victories the rest of they way, and just like Sunday those might not happen. At least we have De Sanctis back there and a good defensive record.

Parma - Napoli

Stadio Tardini

Champions League chasing Napoli will be looking to get back to winning ways when they travel to relegation threatened Parma on Sunday.

The Partenopei haven’t gone three games without a victory since September and there is a sense that the wind has been knocked out of their sails.

Up until a week ago it was double of quits for Walter Mazzarri’s side, as they were still in the Europa League and the title race.

However, defeats to Villarreal and Milan have brought on a mini crisis and frustration boiled over in last weekend’s match against Brescia.

Napoli created a lot in the first half and felt they deserved two penalties, so much so in fact that Mazzarri was sent off for protesting at the fourth official.

The game ended 0-0 and in some respects Napoli were quite fortunate as Andrea Caracciolo made a Man of the Match out of goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis claims there is a conspiracy against his side and that the top three are still privy to refereeing favours.

Mazzarri would do well to ignore his comments and concentrate on the basics which have made this such an incredible season for Napoli.

The Partenopei haven’t suffered defeat away to Parma in Serie A in nearly a decade and Cavani and Co have reason enough to be confident.

Parma have steadied the ship somewhat following a move to a much more defensive 3-4-1-2 formation.

Parma (probable): Mirante; Zaccardo, Paci, Lucarelli; Valiani, Morrone, Dzemaili, Modesto; Candreva; Giovinco, Bojinov

Napoli (probable): De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Ruiz; Maggio, Pazienza, Gargano, Zuniga; Hamsik, Lavezzi; Cavani

Pasquale Marino’s side are unbeaten in three matches, but they also haven’t won since January 22 and need to start turning draws into wins if they are to survive with comfort.

Keep an eye on: Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli) – El Pocho’s three-match ban has coincided with Napoli’s mini-blip and his return should be a massive boost to the team. Lavezzi’s ability to stretch the play and create chances for his teammates isn’t to be underestimated.

Last five in Serie A: Parma (D L D D D) Napoli (W W W L D)

Last season: Parma 1-1 Napoli

Top tip: Edinson Cavani hasn’t scored for five games. Expect him to get back to his net-bulging ways.

Stat fact: Napoli haven’t lost away to Parma in Serie A since May 2001.

Parma 1 Napoli 3

Great comeback - super spririt shown to come from 1-0 down at half time and no coincidence that Lavezzi ran the show in the second half.

Cavani's form a bit concerning but cant expect him to win things off his own boot every week.

Also, Mazzarri has to settle on his back three which should be Campagnaro, Cannavaro & Ruiz who by the way was unbeatable this morning. How Aronica can play in front of Ruiz beggars belief.

Nice to see us get back to winning ways this morning. Also got a bit of luck with other results going our way.

Meanwhile udinese are looking very dangerous and it'll be hard to keep them at bay in the form they're in

Huge game Against Cagliari coming up tomorrow morning.

With Milan having lost this morning and the Milan Derby happening next week, the door has been swung wide open for us to at least regain 2nd place.

But for now we have to focus on Cagliari and not let this chance slip. If we do, I can see udinese continuing their climb up the ladder at our expense.

hopefully we can do the double over our old managers vs lazio in a fortnight time.

this fixture adds more significance to me where it was a 0-2 loss vs Lazio on my very first time watching the naps LIVE at home.

we need maximum points from our remaining home games to stay in the race for the title.

that will mean beating 3 sides in the top 5. lazio, udinese and inter.

guaranteed TOP 3 if we win our remianing home games.

AVANTI NAPOLI...... NOI SIAMO CON TE.

Goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis also made club history by keeping a clean sheet at the San Paolo for 799 minutes of football, last conceding on home turf on November 21 from Riccardo Meggiorini of Bologna. It exceeds Luciano Castellini’s best of 763 minutes in the 1983-84 season, eventually broken by Juve’s Michel Platini. Cagliari hadn’t lost a Serie A tie in Naples since Gianfranco Zola’s only goal on April 25, 1993.

Edinson Cavani is the top Napoli goalscorer in a single campaign, as with 22 he matched Antonio Vojak’s record set in 1932-33. El Matador has managed that feat in 30 games, whereas his predecessor needed 34.

Walter Mazzarri urged Napoli to ignore the Serie A table. “We put pressure on ourselves and it’d be a crime to mess up the last few games.”

The Vesuviani are within three points of leaders Milan and, considering the Derby della Madonnina is next week, could find themselves one point off if that ends in a draw.

“We are putting pressure on ourselves, as we always want to do better,” said the Coach after their 2-1 win over Cagliari.

“We’ve got to focus only on us and not think about anything else. Keep your heads down and push on, because it would be a crime to mess up the last few games.

“It wasn’t easy to break down Cagliari, who kept the pressure up continually. After the break we managed to create a little more space and were sharper, also as we stepped on to the field with a different spirit.

“However, we’ve got to be more clinical when we take the lead and not risk throwing away valuable points.”

Edinson Cavani feels his goals are “bringing Napoli closer to a dream, because you never know in football,” and explained his odd celebratory dance.

The Uruguayan hadn’t netted for six games, but broke that drought with a brace to sink Cagliari 2-1.

That result puts the Partenopei just three points adrift of leaders Milan and right back in the Scudetto race.

“We wanted this victory very much, as it is bringing Napoli closer to a dream. You never know in football.

“These goals are down to the team, who work very hard and put me in a position to score. We believe in hard work and have done since the start of the season, so you can see the results.

“We will keep doing our best and cultivating this little dream of ours.”

Cavani had a curious goal celebration, performing a choreographed dance with teammates Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik.

“It was a sign of how united we are, how much we enjoy playing together, having fun with our football and doing well for Napoli.”

Conversely, one of the best games I ever watched, in the presence of numerous Naps made it even sweeter.

I could feel that awkwardness over the crowd through the TV when those two goals went in, like you knew Reja was getting sacked after this game, it was surreal to watch. 2 outstandingly taken goals from Rocchi.

Walter Mazzari should get the nod as manager of the year. Wanted him at Lazio before we hired Ballardini, and has done brilliantly this season at Napoli. Reja won't be too far behind if he manages to to get us into 4th, which we can forget about if we don't maximum points from the garbage collectors this weekend.

With a mere eight weeks to go, the race for the top-scorer’s crown is getting down to the wire. Four candidates seem the most likely to take the top spot; two elderly captains, one brilliant transfer, and a man who has already made history.

Toto Di Natale is in a league of his own. The thirty-three year old has shown no signs of slowing down despite his aging, and has wrestled the top-scorer mantle from Edinson Cavani. He scored a penalty against Catania, as he did against Bari. In between he notched twice away at Cagliari, two gamedays after scoring a hattrick against Palermo. Four games and seven goals. The kind of form that, were he younger or English, would certainly make him a contender for player of the year.

Edinson Cavani leads the trailing pack, returning to form this weekend with a double against Cagliari. The second was exquisite, the kind of chip that sends the tifosi in raptures. Three behind Toto, he seems the most likely of challengers for the crown. Napoli will need him to be if they’re Champions’ League dreams are to continue.

Samuel Eto and Marco Di Vaio are on nineteen and eighteen respectively, both sending Inter and Bologna surging up the table. The former is no stranger to scoring goals on big occasions, as he is the only man in history to have won consecutive trebles. The latter however is a bit of an unsung hero for his side, as crucial and potent for Bologna as Francesco Totti to Roma or Alessandro Del Piero to Juventus.

There’s a two week break in Serie A action due to international duty, but once the clubs get back to playing, it seems as if Di Natale may have the easiest time adding to his tally. Udinese are away to the league’s worst defensive side, Lecce. Eto will hope to fire Inter to a win and the Serie A summit in the derby, whilst Cavani will want to hold up Lazio from making progress on Napoli. Finally, Di Viao’s side host Brescia who will be absolutely desperate for points in their journey to salvation.
