Harper and Hill look quite comfortable
all you doubters, i'm certain Qatar will put on a successful World Cup in January 2022
FYI I have spent time in Bahrain. there are worse places. Qatar is right next door.

Re: Doha
For the upteenth time, the issues people have with Qatar getting the World Cup have nothing to do with the fact that it is 'Qatar'.Russia2018 wrote:Harper and Hill look quite comfortable

i suspect a mid season break.
with 12 years to plan for it, i doubt it will be an insurmountable issue

As the Christmas and New Year season is the biggest period re ratings etc and the majority of leagues hate breaks (The Scottish League tried a break and stopped) it will be a huge issue
The whole thing is bizzare - now that we have given Qatar the World Cup, we will change everything

Horne in 'cold sweat' over Qatar '22January 12, 2011

Football Association general secretary Alex Horne has branded the prospect of the 2022 World Cup being held in the winter a "logistical nightmare''.
GettyImages
The FA wants more sway in FIFA
• Young English assistant for Capello
• No regular Home internationals
FIFA are exploring the possibility of moving the tournament in Qatar from the summer due to the extreme temperatures in the country at that time of year. That would mean a complete overhaul of the football calendar in England and most other major European countries.
"It's a logistical nightmare,'' said Horne. "Whether it's a good idea or not, I don't know.''
He added: "The notion of playing in Qatar just leaves me in a cold sweat at the moment. It doesn't feel like a great experience for the fans. The whole thing is odd, let me just say that. It will do all sorts of odd things, won't it, because you need to find nine or 10 weeks across the winter. It's going to split the season and you'll need to start early or finish late.''
Qatar were the shock winners of the 2022 bid after seeing off competition from the heavily-fancied Australia and the United States. The outcome angered the losing countries, as did the result of the 2018 bid, which saw England receive just two votes. The FA are keen to learn the lessons from the doomed bid and build better relationships within the corridors of power in Zurich.
Perhaps he should speak to Russia 2018, he seems to have it all worked out

yes, some people are so insular, think they are right all the time and everyone else is wrong
Although so far Qatar have done a great job hosting the Asian Championship
Don't know how they have managed to cope with the influx of people
Not too mention their own supporters who have come out in huge numbers

Re: Doha
Doha is an interesting city. The centre is ridiculously hyper-modern, but travel to the area where the Al Sadd stadium is (10km out) where the game was today, and aside from the stadium it is still quite backwards. Also, the public transport system is non-existent and the roads don't have proper drainage (due to lack of rain) so the small amount of rain that there was today caused some flooding. I'm currently sitting in the departure section of their airport and it too is quite backward and small!
I'm sure they will work everything out though. 11 years on and this will be the most modernised country in the world.

Good to start getting reports from people who have actually been there, or are there. I agree about the Public transport, even Taxis are almost impossible to find - I think you are flying in and out, which is the best way to do things, as there is nothing to do between games
Camel racing is worth a look (if you can get over the fact the jockeys are basically child slaves)

Re: Doha
Doha (Arabic: الدوحة, ad-Dawḥa or ad-Dōḥa, literally: "the big tree") is the capital city of the state of Qatar. Located on the Persian Gulf, it had a population of 998,651 in 2008,[1] and is also one of the municipalities of Qatar. Doha is Qatar's largest city, with over 80% of the nation's population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and is also the economic centre of the country.
Doha also serves as the seat of government of Qatar, which is ruled by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Doha is home to the Education City, an area devoted to research and education.
Doha was the site of the first ministerial-level meeting of the Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations. The city of Doha also held the 2006 Asian Games, which was the largest Asian Games ever held. It will also host a large number of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
