It's a dirty managerial business out there. You better be tough. Watch your step. Trust no-one, and, if need be, call dad.
We are living in testing times for England’s managerial fraternity.
Roy Hodgson had to tolerate abuse from Liverpool fans; Chelsea’s Carlo Ancelotti admitted that he is nothing but “first team coach”. Big Sam Allerdice was sacked by Blackburn’s owners, people who can’t tell a frozen chicken from soccer ball; and Newcastle’s Chris Hughton had to depart the club he returned to Premiership status in order to make way for the chairman’s gaming mate.
One manager stood up for his profession. His name is Ferguson. Darren Ferguson. He called his dad.
A quick summary: Preston North End, from the bottom of the second-tier Championship, sacked their manager, Darren Ferguson. Darren’s dad, who holds a similar position at a nearby club named Manchester United, retaliated brutally by calling back two players he had loaned out to Preston – Norwegian striker Joshua King and Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet. Preston is set to lose other privileges afforded to them by Darren’s dad – such as using the under-soil heated training grounds at Ferguson Sr.’s facility in Carrington.
Such a petty move may seem to some, well… petty. But it was refreshing to hear Preston manager Maurice Lindsay saying the news “Has come as a shock and is a big blow to us”. A chairman actually being bullied as if he were… hmm… a football manager?
The new breed of high-tech-ish manager – with the biometric reports and multi-lingual-multi-cultural motivational skill set may confuse some regarding the nature of the profession. But it’s a dirty business out there. You better be tough. Watch your step. Trust no-one, and, if needed, call dad.
Cheers
