McLaren out for season

Post by Red-4-Life »

Qantas Young Matildas and United Women number one goalkeeper Sian McLaren will miss up to a year of football after she ruptured her ACL ligament in last Saturday’s game against Sydney FC.

Scans revealed the prognosis that will keep McLaren sidelined for an extended period, the news a cruel blow for the 19 year old who has been one of United Women’s better players in the opening three games.

The incident occurred deep into injury time when McLaren came out to the edge of the penalty area to collect a ball only for her left knee to collapse under her.

McLaren’s best friend Kristi Harvey will step in between the posts for United’s Women to fill the void. Reds Women’s Coach Mike Barnett expressed his disappointment at losing McLaren, but said he was confident Harvey would be a more than capable replacement.

“It is disappointing to lose Macca as she was our Vice captain, and has been a standout player for us this season, but we are lucky enough to have Kristi who has been training at a high level along side Macca. Now is her opportunity to show her quality for this week’s game and for the rest of season”.

Barnett has promoted local Adelaide City keeper Hayley Truscewycz as McLaren’s injury replacement for the remainder of the season.

Im hoping that Truscewycz gets a chance to play... I've seen her play and shes always impressed me!

It is a real shame about Macca getting injured though :(

Good luck to Macca for her recovery and to H. Truscewyz (spelling? ). I agree, she's a quality player and will do well. There should also be many more from A.City IMO, it's strange considering that they dominated the Premier League for 2 years in a row...

Agreed. But you can't force those players to trial, especially when they strongly dislike the coach - no surprise there, he seems to be the lowest common denominator in all United's flaws.

Forget the like dislike coaches. To me it appears there has to be other reasons why players from Adelaide City did not trial to be selected for the Adelaide United squad. Work commitments, do not want comit to football virtually full time. If as Rainmaker has stated the coach is their problem, better they arent there.

I thought that they weren't picked/approached by AU, not sure this year but last year they were trialling.

does the controversial W-League rule come into play here? maybe they are not trialling because they don't want to be forced out of their club? just speculation.
