Both Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets will be looking to improve on last year’s standings.

Winning the first game will be crucial to both teams’ chances in pushing for the Westfield W-League Championship title this season!

With the home ground advantage, the Lady Reds from Adelaide United will look to new recruit Stacey Day, to add some strength and composure in the back line. Stacey will be playing against her old club in round one and hope to bring some of the experience she has gained from being involved with the national team.

The number 10 and attacking hope for the reds will be Westfield Matildas squad member Victoria Balamenos. Standing at 5 feet 2 inches, Victoria is a crowd favourite as she contributes a quick attacking style to the team and poses a great threat to any opposition.

However, Adelaide will be up against some tough opposition this week, as the girls from Newcastle will be travelling with a new and improved Jets outfit.

The Jets have acquired some internationals that will automatically add value to this already promising Newcastle team. Shot stopping goal keeper Ali Lipsher has just finished a season in the U.S Professional Soccer league, playing for the Boston Breakers. Ali, a native of Hawaii, is a cool, calm and collected character.

This is evident through her style of football; she is very calm and composed on the ball, but more importantly, producing seemingly effortless saves. Fellow American Nicole Cross will play a vital role for the Jets as she is extremely athletic and can strike a ball at goal from near impossible distances.

These two players join the likes of Captain Hayley Crawford and Amber Neilson, both boasting plenty of National team experience.
With the home crowd advantage for the reds and a fresh new Jets team, this game will prove to be a close one!

Adelaide United FC’s Women’s Team will take on the girls from Newcastle in their opening match of the Westfield W-League 2010/11 Season tomorrow afternoon at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The Reds and the Jets finished in the bottom two last season, but both will be aiming to get their 2010/11 campaign off to a winning start in season 3.

United’s Women’s squad has been considerably strengthened heading into this campaign, having attracted a host of interstate players with previous W-League experience including Katrina Gorry, Vedrana Popovic, Selin Kuralay and Loren Mahoney, while also welcoming back Victoria Balomenos and Ruth Blackburn, who both missed all of last season with injury.

Adelaide Women’s Team Coach Mike Barnett will be hoping new American import Ashleigh Gunning proves an instant hit, the striker touching down in Adelaide yesterday to join her new team mates. But standing in Gunning’s and the rest of the Lady Reds’ way tomorrow afternoon will be Newcastle’s own American import, goalkeeper Allison Lipsher.

Two of United’s new signings will also have added incentive to start the season off in good form, defensive duo Stacey Day and Loren Mahoney both coming up against their former side.

Heading into his third year as coach of the Lady Reds, Barnett knows the season will again be an extremely tough one, with a number of the other sides boasting a host of Westfield Matildas.

But having had a longer preparation and more time for the players to gel, Barnett is hopeful of a good first up showing from his team.

“With the overall improvement of the squad we look forward to a good performance against the Jets,” Barnett said.

“We had an extra month of preparation this time around, which has been invaluable to improve the fitness and understanding of the team.”

“It has also given us more opportunities to sign some experienced W-League players. We feel with the recruitment we have done this should improve our performances and make us more competitive in season 3.”

The squad will be led once again by Christina Papageorgiou, with the local South Australian contingent including Young Matilda’s goalkeeper Sian McLaren, Adelaide United MVP of last season Racheal Quigley, as well as Ruth Wallace, Donna Cockayne, Angela Fimmano and youngsters Katherine Ebbs and Georgia Macri.

Kick-Off is at 2.30pm (ACDT) with gates open at 2.00pm.

I went for a look. 1st half was pretty ordinary.

2nd half was fantastic. Some brilliant saves by both keepers. (and also that fantastic clearance off the line which I though no one could possibly get to)

I will say one thing though, Our girls need to improve their passing. So many simple errors which turned over possession. Also thought we lacked a bit of punch going forward. Still the first game though, time to work these things out.

Who is number 8 for us? Great little midfielder IMO. Doesn't mind getting stuck in either.

Some good attacking football in the 2nd half after a slow start. Were unlucky to not have a couple goals and as mentioned both keepers had a great game.

Watching from the stands I thought the 2.0 loss definitely wasn't the right result.

In my opinion from what i saw it was the right result in a must win game you'd think for Adelaide. Newcastle could have easily been 3-4 nil up at half time. Adelaide only had 20-30mins start of second half where they looked dangerous. Yes should of had a penalty but thats soccer. Not good seeing a numerous amount of adelaide players on the pitch stretching the last 10-15mins, not fit enough??

But yes hope they get the win next week!

I noticed that when watching the Bris v Syd game on TV yesterday too. Think it's got more to do with finally having some warm weather and the fact it's the first game of the season.

Adelaide United FC’s Women’s Team has gone down 2-0 to the Newcastle Jets Women’s Team in the opening week of the Westfield W-League 2010/11 Season at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Two goals in the final ten minutes from Jets forward Sasha McDonnell decided the result in an exciting and highly entertaining encounter that could have gone either way.

The loss was a tough pill to swallow for the new look Lady Reds, who showed encouraging signs and arguably had the better of the chances in the second half, only then to fall to a sucker punch from the Jets courtesy of two clinical finishes from McDonnell late on.

After having disappointing seasons last year, United’s Women and Newcastle’s Women’s Team were determined to start the 2010/11 campaign well, both teams featuring a host of new faces.

Starting their season opener without captain Christina Papageorgiou, who was missing through injury, the home side took it up to the Jets in a high paced opening half with Katrina Gorry lively in midfield, but despite chances at both ends, the score remained nil-all at the break.

The Jets went inches from opening the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, but the Reds defence managed to clear the ball off the line.

Then in the 66th minute the home side had claims for a penalty turned down after the Jets halted Donna Cockayne’s dangerous run into the box, but the referee was unmoved.

With both sides trying to break the deadlock, in the 72nd minute Newcastle’s new American keeper Allison Lipsher produced a brilliant finger tip save to deny a long range Victoria Balomenos effort, defender Ruth Blackburn then watching her header crash into the cross bar from the resultant corner.

United goalkeeper Sian McLaren was doing her best at the other end to keep the Jets at bay, superbly tipping the ball over the bar from a stinging McDonnell shot in the 78th minute.

A draw seemed the likely result, and a point for each team would arguably have been fitting in what was a highly skilled and willing contest, but McDonnell had other ideas as she netted a late double.

First she took advantage of some confusion over a throw in on half way, getting on the end of a neat diagonal ball and putting her shot past McLaren. She then made sure the three points were heading back to Newcastle when she again timed her run to perfection to tuck away her second in the 88th minute and put the game out of United’s reach.

Although the result did not go the Reds’ way, there were plenty of positives to come out of the performance for Coach Mike Barnett, his team already showing significant improvements on last year.

Adelaide United Women’s next match is against Perth Glory Women at nib Stadium in Perth on Saturday 13 November.

the team is good and has quality and yes, its about the coaching staff now being able to get this squad some wins on the board. Of course the players have to play well, but they need direction from the boss.

We"ll at least now they have a squad they can work with, it showed on Saturday previous squads were never going to compete & lack of preparation time a major issue. This team is playing an attacking style, not just playing to survive!
2-3 games together only, so it will get better lets just hope the players up front finish off all the good teamwork.
