Are shin pads really necessary in the modern game?

Seriously, I don't remember the last I was studded or booted in the shins. Injuries can happen anywhere.

I've never had an accident on my motorcycle but I still wear a helmet.

I thought I was too quick for anyone to catch. An over 35's game should be different.

Most definitely, for as long as slide tackles are allowed. I copped one tackle on the shin, slide tackle from the side, after the game had a bruise there - checked my shin pad and it was a crack in the middle of it..hate to think what would have happened if i wasnt wearing them.
They are a lot more comfortable now, hardly know you have them on.
Should be wearing them at training ( if you train ? ) just becomes part of your routine.

Run your finger down the front of your shin.

If you don't have a few (lot) of bumps in the consistency, you've obviously never been tackled.

Either that, or you haven't played, and you're trolling.

I broke my leg twice playing soccer without them before shin pads were mandatory as a youngster.

They are definately, definately necessary !!!

I have bumps all the way down both shins from those days

I'm sure we can organise a trial to see if they are needed in the modern game as long as your happy to be a test dummy for us. We can round up a few players from various clubs and you can try getting around them without shin pads, then do the same with shinpads and we shall see whether you are still asking this question. :D

Steward may have watched old Jean Claude Van Dame movies in his youth like I did and toughened up his shins on palm trees.

+1.....by the way, you're not a Goalkeeper by any chance, even they need shinpads, particularly if you are like to play Goalsweeper like I do :)

Some people tell me that we professional players are soccer slaves. Well, if this is slavery, give me a life sentence.

I dont think we wear enough protection
Im an advocate for mandatory mouthguards and protective head gear, for all players not just goalkeepers

I've never fallen off my motorbike and had my head bounce along the road like a football either. I think I'll still wear a crash helmet though.
