Less than a month out from the start of the new season, United’s Women’s Coach Mike Barnett has so far confirmed 13 players on his list, teams allowed a maximum of 20 players on their roster.
Eight of the 13 players to be selected have returned after being part of the Lady Reds squad last season, while Barnett has brought in five new faces, four of which have had previous W-League experience.
Defensive duo Stacey Day and Loren Mahoney both spent the past two seasons with the Newcastle Jets’ Women’s Team, while Queenslanders Katrina Gorry and Vedrana Popovic were part of Melbourne Victory’s midfield brigade last year.
Promising young local talent Georgia Macri is the other new addition to the squad, the 18 year old picked up from the SASI squad.
Pleased with his new signings, Barnett is also hoping to attract one or two international players to further bolster the squad and help United’s squad mix it with the stronger teams in the league.
“The squad is coming together nicely, and if we can add a couple of internationals it will certainly lift the standard and profile of the team even more,” Barnett said.
“We have a nice blend of experience and youth, which will put us in good stead for the tough competition ahead, so we’re looking forward to a more successful season.”
After finishing in the bottom two for the past two seasons, Barnett will be hoping his side can rise further up the ladder and possibly contend for a finals berth in 2010/11.
All clubs must have their squads finalised by the opening day of the season on November 6. Adelaide United’s Women’s Team will open its season against the Newcastle Jets Women’s Team at Hindmarsh Stadium.

No disrespect to Georgia... I think she is a great girl, and yes, with plenty of potential... However... Her game has dropped the past 12 months since becoming a full time SASI scholarship holder... Does she really deserve to be part of the squad..?? She performed poorly over the long weekend at Para Hills.. Obviously Mike has seen something besides a bit of pace...

Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
It's not about Georgia being cool, its about her being a good enough player to be in the squad....Which she is.
I have seen her train/play over the last 12 months. She has improved on all parts of her game, technique, tactically, physically.....no one is a perfect player, and georgia is no exception. But she has worked really hard this year and has even been selected for young Matildas camps. I don't think it is fair for someone to be judged based on 1 or 2 games (as for the long weekend games, I thought she did a decent job). AU have had other trial games and she performed very well. Same with training sessions.
Keep at it Macri

It is correct that Ashlee has had a number of college scholarships offers from the US and she is wanting to take up one of these. She realises what a fantastic opp this is for her and is very serious about going.
Also she is just about to start her year 12 exams so cant focus on both soccer and school especially when she has her mind set on going to the US. I wish her all the luck in the world she is a wonderful person and role model for the local young girls that look up to her.

Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Don't blame her. Who would want to stay in a country to play soccer when you only have the Lady Reds to aspire to? After all, they are meant to be 'the cream of the crop' yet somehow I see that the coach's priority is not on fitness or commitment but merely, who he likes and who he doesn't. It seems to me that the coach is encouraging a 'social' atmosphere by not punishing those who drink and party on a regular basis and consequently, failing to reach basic fitness expectations. Hmm, that's something to really aspire to.
Further to this, I find it extremely interesting that the team that won the cup and the league only have one representative in the Adelaide United team, what does that say about the standard of the team?
I wouldn't be suprised to see many more athletes leaving this country to pursue their soccer ambitions in the U.S. Harsh, but true.

the lady reds keep on recycling the same players as well...barnett has to get out to a lot more local league games, and more girls need to be encouraged to take the chance in heading out.

Are they ready ? Dont mean skill..they have that, dont mean fitness / gym work etc.....they have that, I am talking from the neck up. We all love having a good time,if the girls are serious about the W League, there is one or two of them that should be getting out of partying / late nights etc, put it all to one side from now, until the end of the W League season. I fully support the team, dont just want them to do well, want them to do really well.Good Luck.
Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Dont't get so caught up on players....the coach is the issue. How can you expect to put up a half decent squad and be competitive when you are still putting the squad together.

Is it me or Mr Barnett getting desperate? He obviously has no idea about the players in South Australia, after all, they are local and he only appears interested in interstate players.
Also, word on the grapevine suggests the he believes all the girls that have been through SASI have been "taught wrong". Thoughts?

Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Is there there some animosity between the Lady Reds coach, and the SASI women's coach ? If there is, are our girls the ones missing out because of it ? I know very little about the Red's coach, I know the SASI coach has been there a long time, does he need a break ?
Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Amen Mr Barnett…Although not without fault, we finally have someone in authority who is questioning SASI’s program. Hav they been taught wrong? Possibly. Unfortunately, SASI has had to try and develop a player who (in most cases) has come with a lot of bad (or missing) techniques. And then the program is supposed to present them on the National stage and compete with highly skilled players from the east.
There is no bridging program in SA to ensure the girls come from a solid base. Clubs do not offer any high level of training because of the structure of the league.
We have discussed before about the absurdity of young girls being thrust into the Prems. The lower grades would be the development of the players and where there is a strong comp to develop in. There isn’t such a structure. Just because someone is in Prems does not make them a good player and as a result Prems is a poor comp.
Can and will this change? No of course not. And we will still have the poor level of skills base that exists.
For me, if I were a girl, I would stay in a boys comp until late as possible. The junior girls comp is no better than a school comp. Kick and a giggle.
So fair is fair..SASI has faults and the coach needs to go. However, will it change too much? Not really because the players coming into SASI do not have a decent base and the training is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. I have witnessed training sessions where players were being taught to do tricks (high level skills) on the ball. It was hilarious and annoying at the same time. My thoughts were “What the F are players doing this at this level, this should already be something they could do.”

Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Interesting post Sad Gal. The reason i made the comment, i thought there was something wrong within the SASI system a while back. There was a young player who came out of retirement for a couple of games to help my daughter's team out,as they are good friends, her parents and I get on well, and we were struggling for players. This young player use to be in the SASI system / State team etc, gave the game away when all the fun went out of it. The week after this girl played her first game, she received a phone call from the SASI coach, inviting her to a training session. She said no,just playing for fun, and the coach allegedly said, "doesnt matter ,you are not that good anyway " so she asked , " why did you, ring me ? " the coach allegedly hung up.SAD GAL wrote:Amen Mr Barnett…Although not without fault, we finally have someone in authority who is questioning SASI’s program. Hav they been taught wrong? Possibly. Anyone who knows this player, knows she is not one to make things up,needless to say was extremely upset and disappointed.
I thought then, how do these people stay in their jobs.......apparently that coach is still there.Say no more.
Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
And he's (SASI coach) got a great eye for talent??? Give me a break (SASI Coach).
Appalling comment to make.
The bloke does not like to be questioned and does treat people with disrespect. His favourite mode of ridding players who know too much or begin to question is for him to:
• Begin to alienate the player
• isolate and berate them publically like saying they are a burden on the squad and do not pull their weight (good way of getting team mates to gang up)
• leave them out of games
• get them kitted up and just before a game tell them they are not playing (for the 4th consecutive week)
• and most importantly he gets them to question their ability and self-esteem and then
• THEY QUIT
He then reports top the seniors at SASI that this person has quit citing school or work pressures.
Problem solved. This also sends a strong message to other players that they should shut UP and grin and bear it.
Whilst you are of worth and obviously kiss his royal bee hind, you’re safe….

Sad to say that are some of these, who are willing to do whatever it takes, just so they can say they have been part of a SASI squad.

Re: Lady Reds squad coming together
Maybe the ABC can invite, Barnett and McCormack, to do a bit of the commentary on Adelaide's games when / if any of them are being televised.

I think you woudl find that this is still true
