Serb goalkeeper in hospital

Post by Eccolo »

Serbian goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic is in hospital for tests after hooligans went into the team bus and threw fireworks at the players.

The Euro 2012 qualifier between Italy and Serbia was abandoned at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris after travelling fans cut the protective nets with wire-cutters, smashed the Plexiglas barriers and threw flares.

The situation was already critical before kick-off, as the driver of the Serbian team bus revealed an ambush.

As the bus was about to leave the hotel, a group of hooligans came through the doors and threw fireworks at the players.

Goalkeeper Stojkovic was injured and is in the San Martino hospital in Genoa for tests, but his injuries are said to be ‘not serious.’

Scottish referee Craig Thomson called off the match after six minutes when more flares were thrown on to the pitch.

As of now, the Serbian supporters are still trying to leave the stadium, but there are reports of further crowd trouble outside Marassi.

Why were the serbs throwing flares at their own keeper?

Probably has something to do with their 3-1 loss at home to Estonia on the weekend.

I think he crossed the great divide between Red Star and Partizan.

Fucking idiots though.

Because they are not fans or supporters.
Just a bunch of common delinquents, and hooligans that use football for their political purposes.

how dumb are they??? i say either ban them from the euro's or ban all serb supporters at any of their games! if you have seen the footage you know they only went to the game with one thing in mind and that was to create trouble bloody dickheads!

esare Prandelli reveals Vladimir Stojkovic was “shaking like a leaf” before kick-off. “The hooligans’ actions were pre-meditated. They didn’t want the game to be played.”
Italy-Serbia was abandoned after six minutes at Marassi this evening when travelling fans repeatedly threw flares, used wire-cutters to slice open the protective nets and smashed in the Plexiglas barriers.

“We knew something was very strange when their first choice goalkeeper, Stojkovic, was sitting in our locker room shaking like a leaf,” explained Coach Prandelli.

“He said the Serbian team bus had been attacked, he had been threatened and feared for his safety. That was when we understood their actions were pre-meditated.

“The intention of the Serbian fans was to ensure this game was not played. Was he beaten up? I don’t know.”

Stojkovic was taken to a local hospital for tests, but it is unclear what exactly happened on the bus.

Some reports state several hooligans burst through the doors as it was about to leave the hotel and threw flares, one of them striking or at least hurting Stojkovic.

The UEFA delegates and Serbian FA tried to push the game on, but Scottish referee Craig Thomson declared the safety of the players could not be guaranteed.

I've since read the report that it was due to the fact he was an ex Red Star player, went to Sporting Lisbon then was transferred to partizan, causing some obvious angst to the majority of the Serb supporters (clearly Red Star Ultras).

Reports saying Italy will be given 3 points.

Three Reasons Why Serbia Fans Caused Italy Game To Be Abandoned, Including Hillary Clinton

1) Football Protest Against Serbian FA

The decision by the Serbian FA and president Tomislav Karadzic to sack coach Radomir Antic last month after the first two Euro 2012 qualifiers caused great anger to fans. Antic was a popular figure among the Serbian public after guiding the country to the 2010 World Cup, despite a disappointing final tournament. Antic is currently locked in a legal dispute with the country’s football association (FSS) demanding two million euros compensation, and the fans have taken his side. They are far from happy at the appointment of Vladimir Petrovic as Antic’s successor, and tension rose even further following his humiliating 3-1 debut defeat at home to Estonia on Friday.

2) Political Protest Against Hillary Clinton & USA

As this is a football website, we don’t plan to delve too far into politics. But, it doesn’t take too much research to recognise the problems between Serbians and Kosovans. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is currently in Serbia as American push for Kosovo to become officially independent. Hillary and her husband – former American president – Bill are huge hate-figures in Serbia. This explains the burning of the Albanian flag during the game.

3) Red Star Belgrade Ultras Protest Against Partizan Goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic

As football rivalries go, there are few more explosive in Europe than Belgrade adversaries Red Star and Partizan. Goalkeeper Stojkovic, who had a nightmare in the defeat to Estonia, is a former Red Star Beldrade shot-stopper having graduated through their youth ranks. In June of this year he even became an honorary member of the club in a ceremony. Two months later, though, he decided to join Partizan from Sporting Lisbon. This caused great anger among Red Star fans who soon began to send the 27-year-old death threats. Some Red Star Ultras reportedly promised to “get” Stojkovic before, during and after the Italy-Serbia match in Genoa. Hours before the game, the goalkeeper was allegedly attacked by fans who stormed the team bus, although this hasn’t been confirmed. Stojkovic was not even named on the bench against Italy.

Why? They should just play the rest of their qualifiers in an empty stadium.

If anyone should be banned it should be Turkey & Israel.

SERBIA has apologised to Italy after clashes between fans and police that forced the cancellation of theirEuro 2012 qualifying match in Genoa.

Meanwhile, football officials are mulling over possible sanctions which include disqualifiying Serbia fromEuro 2012.

Sixteen people were hospitalised including a police officer with first degree burns and 17 arrests were made following the violence, which began before the scrapped match and continued late into the night, officials said.

"I have just received a phone call from Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, who presented a formal apology from the government,'' Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters.

Jeremic promised "to intensify the search for those responsible and to capture the criminals who will be punished to set an example''.

European football's governing body UEFA said it had ordered a thorough disciplinary investigation into the "serious'' crowd trouble.

Serbia face possible disqualification from Euro 2012 over the violence.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said he was afraid for the safety of Italian fans as events unfolded.

Prandelli was a Juventus player during the infamous Heysel Stadium tragedy in 1985 in which 39 people died when a wall collapsed as Juventus fans fled Liverpool hooligans who had scaled a fence to try to attack them.

"It was a night of torment. I thought again and again about how the violence of a few can hold a match and a whole city in its grip,'' said Prandelli.

"When I saw that the Serbian ultras were trying to break through a screen separating them from the Italian fans I was really scared.

"I saw many people with children turning on their heels. When it's like that anything can happen.

"It doesn't take much for it to transform into a night of tragedy.''

The violence brought sharp condemnation from both Italy and Serbia.

"The Beast,'' read a front-page headline in La Gazzetta dello Sport next to a picture of a man thought to be Ivan Bogdanov, the alleged ring-leader, dressed in a black T-shirt with a skull and crossbones and doing a fascist salute.

Serbia has long had serious problems with violent football fans, many of whom are linked to ultra-nationalist organisations. In Belgrade any match between local rivals Partizan and Red Star usually provokes incidents.

In September last year a French supporter of Toulouse who went to Belgrade to see his club play a Europa League match died after being attacked by fans of opposing side Partizan Belgrade. The trial against the 14 suspects is ongoing.

The match was abandoned on Tuesday night just six minutes in, after Italy's goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano appeared to be hit by a flare, which Serbian fans were throwing onto the pitch and at Italian supporters.

Television images showed chaotic scenes of clashes between Serbia supporters and police around the fans' buses, as well as firework explosions.

Ultras earlier on Tuesday attacked a police car, urinated in the main public square and even attacked their own goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, throwing a flare at him when he was in the team bus outside their hotel.

Thugs also left graffiti inside the Marassi stadium glorifying former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and his military commander Ratko Mladic, both accused of genocide and war crimes against Bosnian Muslims.
