Stupid Victorians!
Hi all,
Just moved to Victoria and thought I would ask you all what you thought of the system over here.
They run what they call Champions League over the summer. Much the same as our Zone tournament but it goes for the whole summer. Kids are not elligble for State Selection unless they play in this comp.
So kids cannot play for their State unless they play football 365 days of the year!
My Son is doing OK and was shortlisted for the SA team before we left. Now if I want him to try and get into the Victorian team he cannot play any other sport.
What are your thoughts on this system?

In fairness it seems to me that this parent does have all the right ideas and the "I" may just have been an unfortunate choice of words...Nova wrote:If "I" want to get him inLuke Chant wrote:Hi all,

I agree that children should have the opportunity to play other sports or have some down time in which they get to play with their mates just for fun (a common practice is for my son and his friends is to get together down at the park over the summer on a regualar basis for a kick)
People often get caught up in whether or not their child is picked in the state side when in reality that is only one pathway to sucess!!
One of my sons friends has just been picked in the Adelaide United Youth squad...his family made a choice not to go through the state system when he was younger...they had a variety of reasons for this but Dad's words were...if you are good enough you will make it! This lad has played a variety of sports over the years...he also wasn't pushed up as a 12 year old to play in higher teams...in short he was allowed to develop in his own age group!! Again you don't need to be playing Under 13's as a 12 year old to be sucessful!!
I am not saying that this lad didn't and doesn't spend hours and hours out the back kicking the ball around...he just wasn't forced down a particular path too early!! Great kid but also great parents...
Training 5 nights a week as a 12 or 13 year old is not necessarily the best thing for growing bodies...different things work for different people...if you feel that it is in your sons best interests to get involved in other sports do it!!
My sons coach who played 100+ NSL games will be the first to say to lads...if you don't make the zone/whatever team...don't think that you can never play at a high level because you missed out on one squad!
Never forget that they are children and there are plenty of options in life

Thanks, I have actually told my son that he can stop playing any time he likes. But while he is playing I will help him be the best he can be.
Was a poor choice of words on my part.
He has actually decided not to play in the summer league and play cricket with his mates. Which I think is a much more healthy situation for a 12 year old anyway.
Re: Stupid Victorians!
@ Luke, sorry bud not picking on you, but I do see a lot of parents making pathways and club hopping when kids are just happy to stay put and enjoys the game and play with their mates
I'm sure you do do the right things by your son, as you have pointed out

Luke,
I have also moved across to Vic from SA.
I agree the system is a lot different here compared to SA.
Which club did your son play at this year?

Re: Stupid Victorians!
I was told something similar may be happening over here this year - or at that the U13 STIC squads will continue training through til at least January.Luke Chant wrote:They run what they call Champions League over the summer. Not involved in U13, just told this by one of the Dads whose son is in one of the U13 zone teams. I could have it completely wrong.
Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes.
Re: Stupid Victorians!
Don't know why you'd want to be picked for a Victorian state team anyway.
Just come back to SA for FFSA junior trials ;)
