Thats what i've been hearing.
Does anyone know about this team?
Would be interesting to see who they sign.

Re: Illawarra Stingrays to replace Mariners?
This is a team that plays in the state league in NSW.
The team consists of players from the local league in the Wollongong League.
2 teams from the district (Woonona & University) are regular finalist in the State knock out Cup.
The league in its self is very strong & if you want to compare their standard only the top 3 teams would be a match for them.
They have a top league of 10 teams.
Illawarra is a very strong team in the league & do recruit from the Sydney based clubs if players of quality if required. They have teams from Under 13 to Seniors in the State league.
This team will not be an easy target.
I came from the area & know the manager as I use to go to school with him.
I will contact him for some more info & keep you informed.

Re: Illawarra Stingrays to replace Mariners?
I have just spoken to the manager & their bid was rejected this morning at 10.00am.
They have decided to go with a 7 team league.
They may be involved next year.
They had recruited 6 players from Sydney league & a few from Mariners.
They want to play Adelaide United in a friendly.

Re: Illawarra Stingrays to replace Mariners?
Thats a shame, i was hoping they would be granted entry into the W-League. Its more competition and having 8 teams would be better than having 7. Hopefully they can come in in the 2011/12 season. By not allowing them to play, they are denying lots of young and upcoming talent a chance to shine in a national league.Gommy wrote:I have just spoken to the manager & their bid was rejected this morning at 10.00am.

Yes it is a pity I don't think WWL teams need to be linked to an A league team, Canberra is not, i would try to get a team from Tassie involved as they have few teams in national comps, only the cricket team I think, Illawarra certainly has as much support as Cental Coast and Newcastle based on the old NSL.
Re: Illawarra Stingrays to replace Mariners?
My contact in Wollongong has advised me that the Illawarra Stingrays will play Adelaide United on Saturday afternoon & another game against a select side on Sunday of the long weekend in October at Para Hills after the Zones Titles are finished.
A press release will be issued shortly

This is one of a few games the Stingrays have organized and will be a
good test before they head off to Adelaide to play Adelaide United and
then a State team on the 2nd and 3rd October. Then on the 17th they will
travel to Newcastle to play the W-league side there.
