Interesting article in the UK Telegraph today about an unidentified possible buyer. I only mention it because, unlike most of the other rumours, Keith Harris has a pretty good reputation for no bull.

you need the players to attack. we played with two up front against city, but stevie g had to sit deeper than where you would ideally like him. we have torres, n'gog isn't good enough to hold down a regular starting position in a team which should be challenging for the title (or at least europe) - after torres there is nothing. we have no speed or depth out wide, one quality striker who is injury prone and not match fit at the moment, and with masch on the way out we lack any quality in the midfield aside from gerrard who cannot carry the team week in week out by himself. the squad is hugely deficient in too many areas - there are half a dozen teams with a better squad than ours at the moment. you can only work with what you have got, and at the moment that is not much.

Roy Hodgson says Mascherano decision imminent

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson expects to know before Sunday whether midfielder Javier Mascherano will leave the club.

The 26-year-old Barcelona target has not travelled to Trabzon for the Reds' Europa League play-off second leg tie.

But Hodgson has not ruled out selecting the Argentina captain for Sunday's Premier League match against West Brom.

"I am seriously hoping that in the next couple of days it will be sorted out one way or another," he said. "Although I have no idea which way that will be."

Hodgson added: "I wouldn't want to say he has played his last game for Liverpool.

"The negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs and if he had played here [in the Europa League] it might have prejudiced the transfer and I didn't wish to do that to the player.

"Tomorrow night [Thursday] was out of the question but Sunday is very much a question because I think by then I should know one way or another whether he is going to play for Liverpool this season or Barcelona."

Hodgson had said the sticking point with Barcelona was that the amount offered was "way, way below" Liverpool's reported £25m valuation of Mascherano.

Some reports circulating on Monday evening suggested the Catalan giants were offering only £12m for a player who cost Liverpool £18m three and a half seasons ago.

Hodgson has been consistent in conceding Liverpool would let Mascherano leave provided they received the right offer, honouring an agreement the player struck 12 months ago when Barcelona first expressed their interest.

Earlier in the week, he told BBC Sport: "His head is being turned by Barcelona, who are making overtures to him.

"But until an offer matches our valuation he will stay with us."

On Tuesday, Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was unwilling to discuss prospective signing Mascherano but would do so if and when he arrived at the club.

"I will speak about him when he's here - if he comes," said Guardiola, who admitted he was keen to sign a defensive midfielder.

Turning his attention to purchasing new players, Hodgson added: "I think we could augment our squad if we wanted to but the big thing is to make sure we find the right player.

"I don't want to be acting through panic, I want to make sure the player we sign is the right one."

Dutch club PSV Eindhoven have revealed Liverpool have already been in touch over the possibility of signing their striker Ola Toivonen.

Liverpool ponder bid for Fulham defender Paul Konchesky

Liverpool have spoken to manager Roy Hodgson's former club Fulham to find out if the London team would be willing to sell left-back Paul Konchesky.

"We had discussions with Fulham about whether they were prepared to sell any of their players," said Hodgson.

"I'd be lying if I said Paul was not a name we considered," said Hodgson ahead of Thursday's Europa League tie against Trabzonspor of Turkey.

Konchesky, 29, has two England caps, making his international debut in 2003.

"Whether or not there is a chance of business is very much up in the air," added Hodgson.

Konchesky moved to Fulham in July 2007 from West Ham on a four-year deal.

The Barking-born player was a West Ham academy trainee before leaving to join Charlton, and went on to make 169 appearances for the Addicks.

In 2005, West Ham bought Konchesky back in a deal worth £1.5m and he made 62 appearances for the east London side.

Later on Wednesday, PSV Eindhoven told BBC Sport that a deal had been agreed with Fulham to sign the Dutch club's 30-year-old Mexican left-back Carlos Salcido, a player who had also been linked with a move to Liverpool.

However, Salcido has still to agree terms with Fulham.

Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt commits future to Liverpool

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has committed his future to the club.

The 30-year-old had been linked with a move to Inter Milan to be reunited with former Reds boss Rafael Benitez.

"As far as I know my future is at Liverpool," said Kuyt after helping the Reds beat Trabzonspor in their Europa League qualifier.

"I have had a great time here so far and hope my future here will be great as well and that I can win trophies with Liverpool."

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson welcomed Kuyt's comments but believes they were unnecessary from a player he regards as vital in his attempts to revitalise the Anfield club's fortunes.

"Dirk Kuyt is not for sale so excuse me for not understanding the speculation of being happy now he has said he is staying because I never doubted he was staying," said Hodgson.

"Dirk is an important part of Liverpool, I've made it clear we don't welcome any offers for him and he's not for sale.

"As far as I'm concerned he is someone I believe in, someone I count on, and it is important we improve the team around the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Jose Reina and Kuyt and not sell them and start all over again."

Liverpool had gone a goal down against Trabzonspor as Teofilo Gutierrez cancelled out the Reds's slender first-leg advantage.

But an own goal from Giray Kacar late on and Kuyt's tap-in gave the Merseysiders victory as they completed a 3-1 aggregate win to earn a place in the group stages of the Europa League.

"We were looking down the barrel here coming to Trabzon," said Hodgson after Liverpool's first win over a Turkish side in Turkey.

"They were fresh off a win over Fenerbahce here, they are last season's champions, they don't lose at home and we beat them at home.

"To get a result here was something quite important and will stand us in good stead for plenty of other matches.

"We had the toughest possible start but I thought we got over it and throughout the game played well.

"Quite frankly we should have had the game sewn up long before we did. But I was relieved."

Trabzonspor coach Senol Gunes was left ruing Liverpool's late show as his side failed in their attempts to cause an upset.

"I am really upset but I think we had a positive game and our players tried their best," said Gunes.

"Until the last 10 minutes we tried to control the midfield but we were really tired in the last few minutes. But I am grateful to our players and supporters."

Liverpool move fast to sign Raul Meireles from Porto for £10.7m

Liverpool have moved quickly to replace Javier Mascherano by agreeing a £10.7m package with Porto tonight for the Portugal international Raul Meireles.

Meireles, one of Portugal's more impressive players at the World Cup, is understood to have agreed personal terms and, if everything goes to plan, the deal will be completed over the weekend, dependent on the 27-year-old passing a medical examination.

The transfer was rushed through this evening after Mascherano finally got his wish to leave Anfield, joining Barcelona in a £20m deal that freed up the money for Liverpool to bring in a cheaper replacement.

Meireles is available for a low fee because he only has two years of his contract left and Porto have been trying to sell him rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the future.

The player has been prominently linked with Manchester United over the past month but does not fit into the club's policy under the Glazer family of not signing players for big money if they are aged 26 or above, Dimitar Berbatov being the exception to the rule.

Liverpool do not operate with such restrictions and the manager Roy Hodgson will hope Meireles can make his debut in the league game at Birmingham City on 12 September.
