New Socceroos coach set to be named this Afternoon

Post by the_gun »

Football Federation Australia is expected to announce the new Socceroos coach this afternoon.

FFA chairman Frank Lowy is scheduled to speak to the media via video conference at 4pm (AEST) from Ljubljana, where the Socceroos will face Slovenia in a friendly match tomorrow morning (AEST).

Pim Verbeek's successor is expected to watch Australia take on Slovenia and be at the helm for the next two internationals against Switzerland and Poland next month.

Speculation has thrown up many names as potential candidates for the job vacated by Pim Verbeek after the Socceroos' World Cup campaign ended in June.

Argentina youth manager Jose Pekerman is one of the favourites for the role, however Martin O'Neill's resignation from Aston Villa on Tuesday raised speculation that he may have been offered the post.

Other coaches linked to the position include Paul Le Guen, Arie Haan, Ossieo Ardiles, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard although latest talk is pointing toward the appointment of a lesser known boss.

Davutovic revealed that he is European, so that rules out Bradley.

Martin O'Neill is my tip.

SBS reported this morning that former Urawa Reds and Canada coach Holger Osiek was a bolter for the gig, then changed that tagline and added in Volke Finke and Klaus Fisher. Hmmmmm.

Osieck touted as Australia boss

Speculation is rife that Australia's next national team coach will be a German, with Holger Osieck the man tipped to be confirmed as Pim Verbeek's successor this afternoon.

Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy is scheduled to speak to the media via video conference today at 4pm (AEST) from Ljubljana - where the Socceroos will face Slovenia in an international Thursday morning (AEST) - with strong mail that 61-year-old Osieck will be unveiled as Socceroos coach.

The likes of Paul Le Guen, Jose Pekerman and Dutchmen Arie Haan, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard have been linked with the vacant job, however it appears FFA will opt for a German influence with Christophe Daum and Volker Finke other names mentioned.

Verbeek's successor is expected to watch Australia take on Slovenia and be at the helm in time for the two internationals against Switzerland and Poland next month.

Osieck is a former coach of Canada, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup during his tenure, and has experience coaching in the Bundesliga, J-League and was as an assistant to Franz Beckenbauer when Germany won the 1990 World Cup.

would be a terrible choice IMO

Urawa were boring and defensive..this guy is past it and will only teach our Socceroos German tactics from the era when they were boring

Which is the point of an embargo. Looks like SBS just broke it though.

The only reason we won the ACL was because Buchwald had left Osieck with an amazing team... then he fucked it all up, lost the league title with serious choking and got sacked four games into the 2008 season after consecutive losses.

I don't want Osieck coaching the Socceroos. I don't want Finke coaching the Socceroos (I don't want that guy near anyone I support).

EDIT: I also doubt Finke would be getting the coaching job. He's been terrible so far and Urawa haven't announced anything about his departure. They're frustratingly behind him 100% for the rest of the season.

C'mon, Hans said they talked to lots of people! That's at least worth half a contract right there, regardless of whether they heard good or bad opinions amirite.

This was released in Germany
Juicy Mangoes 2010
On the 11th of August 2010, Osieck signed a deal to coach the Australian national team for a period of four years ending after the 2014 World Cup.

When interviewed regarding his new job Osieck said "Mmmmm I sure do love those juicy mangoes you've got in Australia".

That's why I facetiously ask who he is, as it looks like another example of us getting some second rate coach like Verbeek. We obviously either can't afford or can't attract a coach of the quality we really need to drive the National team forward.

Sad if it is true.

You obviously don't know as much about Osieck as I've experienced.

By the end of his tenure, everyone will be wishing Verbeek hadn't left for Morocco.

Managerial career
After finishing his playing career in Canada, Osieck became an assistant coach to Franz Beckenbauer for the Germany national football team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He then managed VfL Bochum (Germany), Fenerbahçe S.K. (Turkey), Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan) and Kocaelispor (Turkey) before he landed the job of the manager of Canada national football team in 1999. Under Osieck, Canada won the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, earning the nickname "Holger's Heroes," a reference to the television show Hogan's Heroes. He worked for FIFA between 2004 and 2006 as chief of their technical department. In 2007, he again became the manager of Urawa and led the club to win the 2007 AFC Champions League. However, he was fired by Urawa on March 16, 2008, after a poor start to the 2008 season.

I demand transparency. Who did they interview? Who applied? Who did they headhunt? Who said no?

If after answering all those questions Osieck was the best we could do, then so be it.
