Whatever you think about Gerrard... he ain't no footballing man's thinker.
Joe Cole is better than Lionel Messi, claims Liverpool's Steven Gerrard
• Captain excited about new era after 'horror' of last season
• 'Anything Messi can do, Joe can do as well, if not better'
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are set for a bright new era under Roy Hodgson after the "horror" of last season – and claims that the new signing Joe Cole is better than Barcelona's Lionel Messi.
Gerrard, in an interview with Match of the Day magazine, said the new manager has already given Liverpool a lift after a disappointing seventh-place finish last season.
"It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club. It's a new era now – we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."
Gerrard said Cole, signed in July on a Bosman from Chelsea, has the ability to drive the team forward.
"[Lionel] Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better. He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season."

Wow this article has been brought up so many times....
Gerrard was referring to Joe Coles ability to do amazing tricks off the pitch. Not his footballing ability on the pitch. Nobody can touch Messi when it comes to talent on the field and I'm sure Gerrard is more than aware of that.

Christian Poulsen joins Liverpool from Juventus
Liverpool have signed Denmark international Christian Poulsen on a three-year contract from Italian club Juventus for an initial fee of £4.5m.
The defensive midfielder, 30, has been earmarked by manager Roy Hodgson as a potential replacement for Javier Mascherano, who wants to leave Anfield.
Poulsen joins new signings Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Jonjo Shelvey and Danny Wilson at the club this summer.
He knows Hodgson, having joined FC Copenhagen when he was boss in 2000.
Poulsen, who has also played for Schalke and Sevilla, has 77 Denmark caps.
Argentina captain Mascherano asked Hodgson for a transfer on the day he returned to pre-season training after an extended break following the World Cup.
He is keen to be reunited with former Reds boss Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan, although the Serie A club appear unwilling to meet Liverpool's valuation of him.
Regarding any further fee, a statement on the Juve website said: "The consideration for the disposal may increase by a further maximum of 1.2m euros (£1m) on achieving given sports performances in the course of the duration of the contract."
Barcelona Agree Deal With Liverpool For Javier Mascherano - Report
The Argentine midfielder is one step closer to joining the Blaugrana...
Spanish giants Barcelona are set to land Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, after striking a deal with the Reds, according to reports.
The deal will be comprised of a player-plus-cash offer, with the Anfield outfit set to receive midfielder Aliaksandr Hleb and approximately €15 million for the Argentina captain, according to Ole.
The report also claims that the player's agent has already met with Barcelona officials, and confirmation of the deal could come in the next few days.
Mascherano had recently expressed his desire to leave the Reds and join the Spanish side, or reunite with former coach Rafael Benitez at European champions Inter.
The Blaugrana were seeking another midfielder, after Yaya Toure departed the Camp Nou for Manchester City during the summer.
sky sports:
Barcelona will move ahead of Inter Milan in the chase for Liverpool's want-away midfielder Javier Mascherano when they offer £15million and Alexander Hleb.
Surely anyone would be happy with that?
I rate Hleb and would be a great addition to the squad.
If Masch wants to go that badly then we gotta do business sooner rather than later.

Martin Skrtel extends Liverpool contract until 2014
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has signed a two-year contract extension with the Premier League club.
The Slovakia international still had two years remaining on his deal but has now committed his future to Liverpool until 2014.
Skrtel, 25, arrived at Anfield from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008 for £6m.
He told the club's website: "A club like Liverpool deserves to win trophies and I will help them do that."
Skrtel has played 82 games during his time with the Merseyside outfit and was a first-team regular as Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season.
"Before I came here a lot of people thought I wasn't good enough to play for Liverpool but I think I have shown I am," stated Skrtel.
"Lots of things have changed at the club this year, with new players, a new manager and new medical staff."
Roy Hodgson left Fulham to take over as Liverpool manager in July and his new side began the season with a 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.
Skrtel added: "The spirit is very good and we showed that against Arsenal with a great performance. We can build on that and carry it on.
"We have quality in the dressing room and I know we will do better this year.
"Everyone plays football to win trophies. Playing for Liverpool is a big motivation for everyone and we will do everything we can to win the Premier League. We have the highest targets - to win everything."
A broken metatarsal ruled Skrtel out for the final three months of last season but he returned from injury to play in every game for Slovakia at the World Cup before their exit at the hands of the Netherlands in the last 16.
Olympiakos have confirmed the signing of Liverpool striker Krisztian Nemeth.
The Hungarian was on loan at rivals AEK Athens last season scoring three goals in 17 games and has sufficiently impressed the Greek giants.
The 21-year-old, who was heavily linked with a move to the club throughout the summer, follows in the footsteps of Albert Riera, who moved to the Karaiskakis Stadium in July from Merseyside.
Nemeth moves in a 1.3million euro deal, with the Reds set to take 25% of a sale should the striker move on and will undergo a medical on Saturday.
"Olympiakos C.F.P announces a deal with Liverpool for the acquisition of Hungarian international player, Krisztian Nemeth, who will sign a three-year contact with the club," the Piraeus team announced.

Don't care. He obviously hasn't impressed Benitez or Hodgson, which indicates he just isn't good enough.

so shouldn't you be against Joe Cole then?
he obviously didn't impress Ancelotti, a much more successful manager than Benitez or Hodgson, which indicates he just isn't good enough

why didn't they then?
strapped for cash?
not like they've got a billionaire owner...
chelsea did want to keep him however he was not satisfied with the amount of game time he was getting so he decided to leave in pursuit of regular football which he is much more likely to get at liverpool. Game time + Awesome pay + Liverpool does it get any better?

he could get to play in the Champion's League and win things?
So now that Kenny Huang has decided to withdraw from the purchase of Liverpool, where does that leave the Club?
You'd have to think that G&H will be forced out sooner rather than later once the loans fall due.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has agreed personal terms with Barcelona for a move to the Spanish side, however the clubs are yet to settle on a fee. Barca have offered around £12m but Liverpool want closer to £21m.
Liverpool are also willing to engage in further talks with Inter Milan over the sale of Dirk Kuyt to the Italian side. The Reds have already rejected an offer thought to be in the region of £7.5m plus Nigerian striker Victor Obinna.
