ST. MICHAEL"S COLLEGE

Post by 5cougarsthanx »

The footballing pedigree that has gone through that school...... Menillo, Tibaldi, Salapasidis to name a couple that have represented their country. Year after year, taking out the statewide high school knock out competitions..... why is it that every private school has either a side in the collegiate league or SAASL, though St. Michaels have never come together to field an amatuer side of any nature??? I know of a lot of ex students that come on the forum.... any opinions/ reasons??

Underdale HS has produced quite a few good players too.

But valid question about St Michaels not having a representative team.

Adelaide Vikings.
Derived from the St. Michaels Old Scholars soccer team (SMOSH), Royal Park Rampage was established in 1996 by Angelo Picca (who went on to be involved in the evolution of the inaugural Adelaide United). As the SAASL has it, Royal Park began its domination in Sunday’s Division 6 competition. Royal Park gained ? league promotions in as many years.

In 2003 one of the clubs most likeable players (James Kokotis) past away in his prime. In his honour, the James Kokotis Trophy was introduced and is now presented to the best and fairest player for each year. The trophy honours the memory of a great friend and player who is dearly missed by the club.

In 2006 the committee stepped down from what had been a very successful era to make way for a new and innovative committee that still exists today. At the time the new and inexperienced committee (Rob Francesca, John Valias, Michael Mezzina, Carmine Lauriello and Peter Athou), put in tireless effort which resulted in the birth of Adelaide Vikings Football Club and a move to a new home at Matheson Reserve (Findon). Other event coordinators include Carmel Francesca, Courtney Kotaras and Zoe Metaxes.

The Adelaide Vikings FC are now a feared club not only in the Western Suburbs but across the soccer community. The Adelaide Vikings FC have the attitude and culture to continue building on its already strong dynasty.

I dont think any of those guys mentioned in that snipit are ex St. Michaels students... a strong portion of Fulham United's players attended the school as well as a lot of the boys that play at our club.

When I started, not many. There were only three people from my graduating year at school in the club. Now there is at least two people from every graduating class from 1995 up to 2009.

This year, just over 60% of registered players finished their schooling at SIC. Our growth from 3 teams in 2005 to 6 teams in 2010 has directly correlated with the spike in ex-SIC students coming to the club (post-2006 World Cup boom? power of social networking?). All of our regular supporters are all generally somehow affiliated with SIC as well.

Some current Super League players also owe us their allegiance through SIC roots (Ivan Karlovic, Dom Signiorello et al) but I don't like us signing any of them for a very long time or ever!

I think an amatuer soccer side, with a "school" as its base and history, can grow quite quickly and build a quality club, like yourselves. There would be no problem with interest as there are many players in the SAASL that are ex students, and the flow/ supply of players would not be a problem if the team is marketed right to ex- students of the school.

You have to draw the line somewhere as it becomes a matter of quality or quantity - are you a football club that has a great social aspect or are you a social club that plays football once a week? I think this year we've actually hit the nail on the head with the balance throughout the teams, we'll have to see how we cope in Division One (and hopefully Division Three) next season.

If you ever get 100% then you will be fully SIC :)

They've certainly had some quality players go through that school. Back in 1993 when I was in year 12 at St Peters we had a very good team, I believe we won every game except for against St Michaels. Most of their players were all ready playing for West Adelaide but we thought we could give them a run for their money, we went down to their ground and got smashed 4 or 5 nil

You'd think they would be a powerhouse if they had a true old boys side in the amateur league.

Not too feared as currently sitting 3rd last, and facing potential relegation

And I always thought one of main reasons for the name change from royal park to Vikings was due to the previous committee pocketing money.

I remember that year it was my final year too... SMC had a great side that year, we smacked every team that year... And far king, i do remember that SPC team it had alot of Hamishes playing for it  Hamish Mcleay was capt i think?

it was suggested a few years back to start an old-scholars team again where players finished playing at fed level go back and play with this team and to also offer an outlet for players finishing year 12 that werent good enough or not wanting to play fed football to play but it never really got off the ground... Obviously coz of the hard work involved in organising and running a club... But hey if there is an interest again i know a few lads who would be interested in helping out...

Well I played in that team as well Real One. Played in goals. Is that enough of a clue?? Salmeron, Menillo, Adami, Konstad, Del Bono (coach), Musci, Salapasidis, Mallia, Frank Carbone, Salerno ( i think), Mechis, Stef Pappas.... just a bit of quality there. All played at Nat. League, State League level.

Didn't Royal Park get kicked out because of a brawl with someone (Croatia?)? They reappeared the following year as Vikings...

I started my soccer career if u call it that at O.L.M, way back in 1984,with Alex Byrne as the coach, coaches son Michael, some of us went on to St michaels in 85,where we played with Dino,we were always a good side but use to struggle against fulham gardens until, most of the fulham team left and went to S.M.C like Pappas, about year 7,the coached changed and didnt see my value in goals, which pissed me off,i remember representing S.M.c at Broken hill, but then lost interest, dont know why,but after umpteen years(30 years old) i started playing again thanks to a friend for Chile, and then Elizabeth Grove for the last three years,im 35 and play like i have to make up for those lost years, alot of them,i have very fond memories of Mr.Byrne and the lads i played with but the one that stood out was Menillo,he always dominated, good times!

Can't believe you're that young REAL one. Last time I saw you play was about three years ago and you couldn't get out of the centre circle. :P Having said that, I guess you didn't really need to- you were still able to do enough damage from there.
