wow! what a finish its going to be in Saturday div.2

I think it's safe to say that Iggies are going to be crowned Championions. The only thing stopping them would be if a massive player exodus were to occur. Even then they still may have enough points to see them finish in top spot. I know Kitchimo will say that there's still a long way to go, and he is right (6 rounds), but I think Glenunga oval can start preparing the champagne bottles from now because Iggies will be taking out the title.
2nd spot is however very much up for grabs. All Stars United, Comets and MA Hawks are well and truly in a dog fight for the remaining promotion position. I think Navarino may find themselves too far off the pace but still have an outside chance if a mass of results were to fall their way.
On the flip side, the battle for relegation is just as intriguing as the race for promotion. Sthn Breakers, FC Adelaide, Gleeson, Cougars and Budapest are all in danger of playing Div.3 soccer next year.

My tips for Promotion

PROMOTED TEAMS
Champions Iggies :D
2nd position All Stars :)

RELEGATED TEAMS
9th positon FC Adelaide
10th position Gleeson

Anyone else's predictions?

yep, all play in the same division but in two different competitions, 1 for promotion and the other to avoid relegation. Should be an exciting end.

Iggies and Comets for promotion, Southern Breakers and Budapest for relegation.

Promotion is still not a certainty, let alone titles. The old cliche of 'taking it one week at a time' has been spoken about all season. It's just a matter of winning first, and then everything else will take care of itself.

Allstars have already played Comets and Hawks in the second half of the season, so they should get a promotion spot. They play us on the last day of the season and I guess the manner in which we approach that game will probably depend upon if we are in the cup semi-final the following week or not. We won't want to lose though.

As for relegation? FC Adelaide definitely. They were practically a new team yesterday. It was 1-0 at half time despite us playing into a massive wind. We scored within 2 minutes of the restart, and they gave up. No heart whatsoever. You need heart to win relegation battles. I think the other teams around that mark do have some, so I think FCA will finish bottom, with the Round 18 clash between Gleeson and Breakers probably deciding the other spot.

Kitchimo, i'm admiring you guys keeping your feet on the ground. At no stage has anyone from your club come on to this forum suggesting your the best team in the SAASL since the Cougars

The best thing about a relegation battle (I know this sounds weird, but I've seen a few now) is that it keeps the season relevant.

Well, I'm calling it. Iggies are going to Div 1, Possibly the strongest club in the SAASL at the moment, given the success of the other teams. Even the E grade have kicked 62 goals so far this year. The E's coach wants 100. Who would not want to come and play for Iggies? Great culture out there too. I just hope Saints can stay in Div 1 so we can kick their rings next year.

Whilst it's pretty obvious we are going up as champions, we are far from the strongest team in saasl.

player numbers - no (presuming adelaide uni have more)
money - every team in sunday div 1 (probably)
ability - let's win division 1 and the cup before we even think about that

OISC hasn't won anything yet in 2010 aside from a few extra (semi-permanent) spectators. The time for crowing comes after the season, not before or during. Let's have this discussion on the night of 4 September.

Not many, since there aren't many E grade sides. :D

I hear the F Grade coach is a decent bloke, with his feet on the ground, not having crazy goals like 100 goals.

I agree, the F grade coach is a decent bloke.

He has his feet on the ground but then again he's like an elephant - he can't jump.

Budapests win vs breakers effectively splits the league into two parts - the 3 chasing the other promotion spot and 4 in a relegation battle.

Gotta say I think FC and Breakers will go down. Gleeson are much better than their table position indicates - even though we won 5-1, it was 0-0 until about the 65 minute, and then 1-1 with about 20 to go. We piled on a few late goals to make the scoreline a bit flattering. Apart from losing to Africa, Gleeson have given us imo the two hardest games we've had in the league.

Still, hoping breakers pull off an upset (draw good too) vs africa next week, wouldnt mind winning the title at home rather than having to go to hawks 2 weeks later to do it :D

3 teams fighting for one promotion spot, we have to play them all, Allstars have the advantage as they've played both of the others.

4 teams fighting to stay up. I've already said before that I believe FC Adelaide will go down. Do any of the other three teams have to travel to Port Elliot? Home ground advantage may make a big difference in those fixtures. I know Gleeson v Breakers is the last round of the season.

looks like we will have our hands full this Saturday.. can only promise you that we will be out there doing our bestest to give you the most challenging game possible. We are fighting to stay alive in Div 2, too close to call between the bottom four sides in this comp.
We have played at Port Elliot this year so the return game in 2 weeks time will be played at Findon. Hate being in this position at this particular time of the year. Every game is a Grand Final.

I was just going through the fixtures for next week and I reckon that the match of the round is going to be Sthn Breakers v All Stars United.
There is a lot riding on the match for both teams and for others.

3 points to note.

1 - Sthn Breakers are fighting relegation
2 - All Stars are looking for promotion
3 - A draw or win to Breakers will see Igies win the title if they beat Cougars

Last time they played it was the All Stars who won 1-0.
I'm predicting the All Stars to win 3-0 and go a step closer to winning promotion.
Iggies will have to wait until the following round to beat the Hawks to win the Championship.

Another 2 key points to note.

1 - I have been wrong before
2 - I will be wrong again :D

1-7 the final score, so you were close

The next round of fixtures in the race for promotion and relegation. MA Hawks need to get something out of the OISC match, whilst if Cougars beat Breakers then they should be safe, assuming Budapest gets the job done against FCA.

A Breakers win would blow the relegation dogfight wide open

More big matches this weekend:

ALLSTARS UTD v NAVARINO - AU can't afford to slip up in the fight for second, Navarino are only playing for pride now.
COMETS v GLEESON - Comets can't afford to slip up either, Gleeson are in a fourway dogfight at the bottom and will be pumped.
COUGARS v STHN BREAKERS - a Cougars win would practically guarantee safety. Breakers need a win or at least a point. Breakers win throws the dogfight wide open.
BUDAPEST v FC ADELAIDE - Budapest playing for 5th spot, FC Adelaide also in that dogfight. I'm tipping an upset here.
MA HAWKS v OLD IGNATIANS - if MA Hawks drop points their promotion aspirations are likely over. If OISc win they are Champions.

Comments
The promotion battle and relegation battle are really starting to heat up. That catchup match between Comets and Gleeson could end up being an 'all or nothing' for both sides.

At the top of the table, we have had a say and may still have a say in who is promoted.

35pts Allstars: Gleeson (home), OISC (away)
30pts MA Hawks: Comets (away), Budapest (home)
29pts Comets: MA Hawks (home), Cougars (Away), Gleeson (home)

If Allstars win against Gleeson, MA Hawks are out of the running. If MA Hawks and Comets draw, then they've both probably blown their chances. If Comets win and Allstars win, then the match between OISC and Allstars in Rd 18 is crucial.

If we win, then Comets must beat Budapest and then beat Gleeson in their catchup fixture, and then hope that their goal difference is better. If Allstars win or draw, they bounce straight back into Div 1.

The bottom of the table is just as fierce.

17pts (+10) Navarino: Cougars (away), FC Adelaide (away)
13pts (-16) Cougars: Navarino (home), MA Hawks (away)
13pts (-16) Gleeson: Allstars (away), Breakers (home), Comets (away)
13pts (-24) Breakers: FC Adelaide (home), Gleeson (away)
13pts (-24) FC Adelaide: Breakers (away), Navarino (home)

Navarino get dragged into the relegation battle by virtue of their poor recent results. I wouldn't be suprised if they lost both of their matches. However, they would need FC Adelaide, Gleeson, and Cougars all to win two matches to be relegated (or they lost 15-0).

Breakers have the easiest 'draw'. It is in their hands playing against two of the other three sides. If Cougars can beat Navarino I reckon they are safe by virtue of their goal difference.

Whoever loses between FCA and Breakers will get relegated.

OISC and Allstars are promoted. The win by MA Hawks over Comets has practically wrapped up third as Popovic is still suspended next week. He did a 'decent' job reffing the B Grade game yesterday

FC Adelaide are practically down unless they beat Navarino by 7 goals and hope Gleeson beat Breakers and the lose to Comets by more goals than they beat Breakers.

If Gleeson win, Southern Breakers are practically relegated, assuming Comets don't pump Cuogars by 12+ goals and then pump Gleeson by X amount of goals the following week.

If Gleeson and Breakers draw, then the Comets v Gleeson match becomes crucial - must win for Gleeson whilst Comets likely playing for nothing. One of either Cougars, Breakers, or Gleeson goes down (unless Cougars beats or draws with Comets).

If Southern Breakers win, they are safe, and Gleeson can only stay up if Comets beat Cougars, and then they themselves beat Comets in the catchup match, and only then if their GD improves to beat Cougars.

The only way Navarino could do down - Gleeson and Breakers draw, Navarino lost by 7 goals to FC Adelaide, Cougars draw or beat Comets, and then Gleeson beat Comets in the catchup match. That would result in FC Adelaide and Southern Breakers going down.

My prediction: FC Adelaide to go down, along with the loser of the Gleeson v Breakers match. Breakers have been in good form lately (3 wins in a row?), so I will call a Breakers win and Gleeson to go down.

If they draw that match, I predict Gleeson will beat Comets in the catchup match, so Breakers will go down.

The only relevant fixtures left in this division are:
MA Hawks v Budapest
OISC v Allstars United

It's pretty simple - if MA Hawks win or draw, they are champions. If MA Hawks lose and OISC win, MA Hawks are champions. If OISC don't win, then regardless of the MA Hawks result, they are champions.

MA Hawks will pump Budapest and be crowned champions IMO.

I assume the Comets v Gleeson catchup match will be played (along with the A Grade catchup match), but will the Allstars v Navarino match be played?

Anymore thoughts on this tight relegation battle? Apart from Iggies and Africa staying in the same spots on the ladder what will be the final standings for the rest on the league?

My thoughts is that FC Adelaide and Gleeson will be regelated with Southern Breakers again finding away to stay in Div2..
