Lamps and Gerrard were the only attacking outlets, Rooney let the team down this world cup, and i really think Crouch should have gotten some game time, he's a proven goalscorer for England.

Terry didn't have a decent partner all tournament either, at least with Lescott and Rio fit he would have been able to actually work it out at the back.

Lahm made a few errors but Ashley Cole was woeful!

For me, it all comes down to the coach and his philosophy. Too many coaches pick players on their name, rather than what they can do for a team. It's bloody obvious to every Englishman who's ever watched England that Lampard and Gerrard do not play well together in a 442 so trying to fit them both into the team is a waste of time. They might however, work OK in a 433 so try it and see. Rooney plays his best as a lone striker so, if you're going to make him your spearhead, play 451 or 433 and give him to room to roam across the pitch, then pick midfielders and wingers that push up in support. Milner scares no-one, he couldn't outrun a traffic cone. Get Lennon in there and put up with less than perfect delivery. At least he keeps the left back entertained all game. Gareth Barry is not all bad, but his distribution is woeful. He's not international class.

Capello likes 442, which is fair enough, but then pick the players that suit that formation i.e. not Rooney, not Lamps AND Gerrard

Round pegs and square holes don't work.

while the coach will be questioned regarding all facets of the humiliating exit, you should note a couple of things....

1- since 1966, no trophies, a couple of semi final penaly exits, lots of 1/4 finals and even non qualification. common factor - the england players - not the coach

2- capello played predominantly a 4-4-2 because thats what the england players know best. they are techically inferior and tactically naive. remember when mclaren played a 3-5-2 against croatia??? dont be fooled by english club football where many systems/formations are used. this occurs because of the foreign player's ability to adapt
