New name on the trophy?

Post by Hawkesy »

With only 4 countries left who have previously won the trophy (England, brazil, uruguay and argentina), could we be seeing a new name on the trophy?
Things I am owed because they're too tight to pay up:

Costa: One Lunch

Oh and add in

What happened to Germany??

Maybe, out of those 4, Brazil, Argentina and Uruaguy all are a chance of winning it. There's a few others that could do it, Portugal, Chile, Mexico could all do it if they play at there best whilst Spain would still be the favorite if they play there best. Will be an interesting knockout stage for sure, i'm tipping Argentina.

Germany could do it, but i'm not sure there defence will be quick enough for the South American teams tbh.

in the 1974 world cup did the win it or did they go out in the second round?

In their final group game, did they win 1-0 or lose 1-0?

They won it in 1954, 1974 and 1990

The achievements of West Germany and now Germany (headed by the DFB) are recognised by FIFA as the same entity - they don't include East Germany's achievements

so did east germany not exist then? how many teams played in the 1974 finals?

If knowing that west germany won the world cup is ignorant, then I'll take ignorance.

Does that include or exclude the Sudetenland?

As long as we are spitting hairs...England's name is not on the Fifa World Cup Trophy either, it is on the Jules Rimet Trophy. Same goes for Uruguay. There are five names on the Fifa World Cup Trophy - Brazil, Italy, West Germany, Argentina, and France.

England is a country. It's Great Britain that's the farce.

so now if brazil, germany or argentina win they get to keep the trophy any we get a new world cup trophy same went for italy as well but as we know they are gone lol

brazil took the jules rimet trophy in 1970 cause they won it for the third time now all those nations have one it twice since then so potentially brazil could have both tropies

The rules are not how they used to be, FIFA rules say that the World Cup is not to be kept by any nation anymore. Doesnt matter how many times a nation win it.

very good point. So unless it's won by brazil or argentina then it's a new name.

In Hawksey's defence, I never quite understood why Russia is credited with the USSR's achievements, this is the case no? Also who gets credited with Yugoslavia's successes?

Do Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Serbia AND Montenegro, Just Serbia or Just Montenegro get credited with the gold medal that Yugoslavia won?

I suppose this is a slightly difference case in that West Germany became amalgamated into a larger state whilst the cases I've illustrated are countries being divided but it still raises an interesting point as to who's credited with success when nations change. To me it just seems simpler to say, West Germany won it, not Germany because whilst Germany was a unified nation they did not win it. Similarly Yugoslavia won the gold medal, not the above mentioned nations.

For the record, Macedonia lies in Greece and therefor they celebrated the EURO 2004 triumph with the rest of the Greeks from Sparta, to Athens, to Rhodes and Crete  Having said that, it wouldnt surprise me at all if the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia claimed the Football history of another country, for it wouldnt be the first time they claimed something not theirs  :D
