Christ, you lot make it sound like you're really hurt personally that someone doesn't support or identify with a country in the same way that you do.
I've got a couple of friends that say (very different people, with different processes to arrive at the same conclusion) nationality and patriotism is a dangerous thing... the more people jump up and down, the more I agree with them.

I was born in U.K. But have lived here for 40 of the 47 years of my life. My first team is Australia 100%, but also like to see England do well.Franco UnAmerican wrote:I would rather someone supporting us because they have real passion, anyone that is confused when Australia plays thier "parents" country of birth can bugger off and support the opposition......Petro83 wrote:i shiraz hate it wen 2nd or 3rd generation people who were born in AUSTRALIA support the team playing against australia just cos your grandma or ya dad was born over there. if u are born here u are australian and u support australia.
4yrs ago wen the aussies played italy( dad and grand parents from italy), i was aussie thru n thru and had tears in my eyes when we lost that game.
I don't understand how anyone can not support 100% the country of their birth, the country that gives them the lifestyle they obviously take for granted.
In saying that........Once Australia is knocked out go your harderst to support your parents country of birth.

The fact that you have a Greek heritage and enjoy their way of life is a choice that you make. I am happy for you, that you have a strong passion for the culture of Greece. You have the ability to choose to live your life the you want to without copping s--t from anybody else. It is this ability to choose, that makes this country the great one that it is. But you are still Australian.
PS. No offence is intended by this post, and hopefully none is taken. Yes, there are a lot of people out there, who are sensitive about their ethnic status in Australia, but going back to our parents, and their parents generation, it was these people who helped build this great country.

Re: Attention: Serbs in Adelaide
Absolute bollocks. Where you are born has nothing to do with it, and ive already explained that many times over. So if your born on the moon, does that make you an alien??? A more likely scenario (although Branson will make the first very likely soon enough ), your parents are on a holiday in lets say India and your mother is pregnant with you and doesnt make it back in time to have you and you are born in India. Does that then make you Indian??? And dont be an idiot and answer yes because that sounds so stupid it aint funny. How about your old man is a CEO of a company that is based in the middle east. He takes your mother with him to live in Dhubai and you are born in the 3 years he spends there, does that then make you middle eastern from Dhubai??? Get real mate, you dont have the choice of where you are born much like you dont have the choice who (parents) you are born to. I am a Greek and wasnt born looking like an Aussie, i actually look Greek believe it or not Also, i was also raised in the Greek way which may also shock you Would you like me to carry on??? If im Australian like you say, then why did the Sullivans call me a WOG when i was growing up and still referred to one today??? Get the hell out of here, Greek and proud of it mate. Love Australia for different reasons, and will support them to the hill like i did for the World Cup but dont tell me what i am, because i know what i am and very comfortable with it thankyou very muchlooprevil wrote:Born here, you are an Australian, end of story.COLOSSUS wrote:You cannot even begin to compare yourself to those Greeks you speak of and dont even try. Collosus, your analogy is retarded because your parents didnt come here for a holiday did they (as you are saying with going to India). They came here to live and prosper in the greatest livable nation in the world. And you werent just born here then went back to Greece, you've lived your (i presume) entire life on our shores.

Re: Attention: Serbs in Adelaide
No its not retarded at all. You people want to speak about birth country, then im talking about birth country, or is birth country now only defined by how long you live in that birth country??? What a joker Whatever makes your theory acceptable i suppose, but truth is this, whether i have lived here or whether i was passing for a holiday, if i was born here, either way it would make it my birth country, correct??? If the answer is yes, then i am correct anyway you want to look at it. For the record, apart from 3 years then your presumption would be correct. As for the greatest liveable nation in the world, have you even lived in any other country let alone every single country in this world before you came to that conclusion or are you just shooting your mouth off like some others on this subject???Mato wrote:Collosus, your analogy is retarded because your parents didnt come here for a holiday did they (as you are saying with going to India). Re: Attention: Serbs in Adelaide
Yes. Last year I lived in Croatia for 5 months, and spent another 5 weeks between Norway and Sweden. Previously ive seen too many countries to list. I find other places interesting, and they certainly have things that Australia could take note of. But for pure quality of lifestyle, we are king.
One would assume that if you are born in a country and then live in it, you adapt to your local environment and culture. That is obviously not possible if you are just born then go home.

Re: Attention: Serbs in Adelaide
I wasnt asking you Hawkesy, but my question to him still remains. You cannot claim that we live in the greatest livebale nation on the world if you havent really lived in every country of the world. I have only ever lived in Greece other than Australia and therefor i could easily comment on which one i prefer (which ive done so a few times before), but i wouldnt sit there and claim that the one i prefer is the gretaest liveable nation in the "World" because that would be a false statementHawkesy wrote:COLOSSUS wrote:have you even lived in any other country

Also, dont assume, assumptions are the mother of all fu.ck ups The question was easy, whether you live in your country of birth or not, is it still your country of birth??? The answer is simple and very relevant to the subject at hand which you base your whole theory around, therefor, you cannot now just include what you feel like all to justify your pathetic view on this subject.

Im not going to look it up, but if you google 'top 10 livable nations', i can guarantee 1/2 will almost always be Norway then Australia. These lists are done based on many factors. Ive seen both these countries and a whole lot in between. I'm not spouting anything other than what I believe to be the truth

It could still be correct, if you give me a mathematical equation and I guess the answer. It could still be correct even though I guessed. So, not necessarily a false statement.
I agree with you on this one though because clearly England is the most liveable.
I also agree that just because you are born somewhere doesn't make you that nationality. The way your parents have raised you and the blood they have given you has more to do with nationality than where you were born will ever do.

Please, please, cant we all just get along?
Why do conversations about serbs and croats have to get out of hand EVERYTIME?
Always bringing in race or religion.
It was all in the past. Get over it.
This is a forum about soccer, not your race-wars.
Oops, sorry.
Its wog vs aussie, not serb vs croat.
Thats ok then.
Argue away, hypocrites.

You can twist words all you want, but it doesnt matter what you say, I think any reasonable human being can draw a distinction between being purely born (ie paper says) in a country, and actually living there and the affect it will have on you.

An interesting position you are in hawkeye. I know you disagree with me, but your need to prove collossus wrong works in my favour haha.
im leaving work, so i'll keep it brief. I think this whole things been blown out of proportion a bit. As anyone who knows me will tell you i identify as Aussie, but I am very proud of my ancestry I know not everyone will feel the same, but I'm pretty passionate about australia and our lifestyle, and just get a bit fired up when people try to bring it down.

Don't put it on a public forum then.
So you have to live somewhere for 4 seasons before you are "living there"? What if you do 1 day in December, 1 in March, 1 in June and 1 in September. Would you be living there then or do you have to do it continuously?

You may have to ask him that question You spoke the language before you lived there right, so nothing out of the ordinary there. You didnt even spend 4 seasons there so you arent qualified to compare the weather with Croatia against Australia let alone tell us that Australia is the greatest liveable nation in the worldMato wrote: I don't get why Hawkes likes arguing with you so much, you don't get much. Im not twiesting words, thats you. Is it true that whether you have lived in the place of your birth for the majority of your life or not, it is still your country of birth??? Its exactly the same as what im saying. Just because i was born in Australia and have lived the majority of my life here, doesnt change and will never change the fact that im Greek or look Greek. Next you are going to tell me that my kids and their kids are going to look less Greek than me as more of the generations of Greeks born in this country progresses. What a load of bollocks. As long as my kids marry Greeks like myself, nothing will change, they will always look Greek, majprity will speak Greek, and they will almost certainly have been brought up in the same way i was eating the same foods, practicing the same cultural traditions etc etc and the only problem who has a problem with that is people like yourself. Get over it mate, you live in a multi cultural country that is made up of many different ethnicities, thats called FACT
