I've got a couple of friends that say (very different people, with different processes to arrive at the same conclusion) nationality and patriotism is a dangerous thing... the more people jump up and down, the more I agree with them.

I was born in U.K. But have lived here for 40 of the 47 years of my life. My first team is Australia 100%, but also like to see England do well.Franco UnAmerican wrote:I would rather someone supporting us because they have real passion, anyone that is confused when Australia plays thier "parents" country of birth can bugger off and support the opposition......Petro83 wrote:i shiraz hate it wen 2nd or 3rd generation people who were born in AUSTRALIA support the team playing against australia just cos your grandma or ya dad was born over there. if u are born here u are australian and u support australia.
4yrs ago wen the aussies played italy( dad and grand parents from italy), i was aussie thru n thru and had tears in my eyes when we lost that game.
I don't understand how anyone can not support 100% the country of their birth, the country that gives them the lifestyle they obviously take for granted.
In saying that........Once Australia is knocked out go your harderst to support your parents country of birth.

Just an example, Aus v Greece in Melbourne, thousands of Greeks, as young as 9/10 singing over the Australian national anthem with the Greek one, most probably born here and never even been out of the country. boils my piss. Absolute bollocks. Where you are born has nothing to do with it, and ive already explained that many times over. So if your born on the moon, does that make you an alien???looprevil wrote:COLOSSUS wrote:You cannot even begin to compare yourself to those Greeks you speak of and dont even try. Born here, you are an Australian, end of story.
The fact that you have a Greek heritage and enjoy their way of life is a choice that you make. I am happy for you, that you have a strong passion for the culture of Greece. You have the ability to choose to live your life the you want to without copping s--t from anybody else. It is this ability to choose, that makes this country the great one that it is. But you are still Australian.
PS. No offence is intended by this post, and hopefully none is taken. Yes, there are a lot of people out there, who are sensitive about their ethnic status in Australia, but going back to our parents, and their parents generation, it was these people who helped build this great country.![]()

No its not retarded at all. You people want to speak about birth country, then im talking about birth country, or is birth country now only defined by how long you live in that birth country???Mato wrote:Collosus, your analogy is retarded because your parents didnt come here for a holiday did they (as you are saying with going to India). They came here to live and prosper in the greatest livable nation in the world. And you werent just born here then went back to Greece, you've lived your (i presume) entire life on our shores.

I wasnt asking you Hawkesy, but my question to him still remains. You cannot claim that we live in the greatest livebale nation on the world if you havent really lived in every country of the world. I have only ever lived in Greece other than Australia and therefor i could easily comment on which one i prefer (which ive done so a few times before), but i wouldnt sit there and claim that the one i prefer is the gretaest liveable nation in the "World" because that would be a false statementHawkesy wrote:COLOSSUS wrote:have you even lived in any other country
You picked the wrong person with that one

So you consider holidays as living there???Mato wrote:Yes. Last year I lived in Croatia for 5 months, and spent another 5 weeks between Norway and Sweden. Previously ive seen too many countries to list. I find other places interesting, and they certainly have things that Australia could take note of. But for pure quality of lifestyle, we are king.
One would assume that if you are born in a country and then live in it, you adapt to your local environment and culture. That is obviously not possible if you are just born then go home.

I don't get why Hawkes likes arguing with you so much, you don't get much. What quantifies living then? I studied at the uni of zagreb, rented an apartment, spoke the local language...? But thats a holiday in your view. Id say i was pretty immersed in the local culture.COLOSSUS wrote:So you consider holidays as living there???Mato wrote:Yes. Also, dont assume, assumptions are the mother of all shiraz upsThe question was easy, whether you live in your country of birth or not, is it still your country of birth??? The answer is simple and very relevant to the subject at hand which you base your whole theory around, therefor, you cannot now just include what you feel like all to justify your pathetic view on this subject.

Could you give us your definition of living somewhere? When does a holiday become living there? Have I ever lived in australia? Have I ever lived in England?COLOSSUS wrote:So you consider holidays as living there???This debate with you is over, but thanks for your input

No more needed to be said Hawkesy, at least you have the decency to recognise as much. I may frame this one, its the only one we actually agree onHawkesy wrote: I also agree that just because you are born somewhere doesn't make you that nationality. The way your parents have raised you and the blood they have given you has more to do with nationality than where you were born will ever do.

I reckon whatever your definition, Mato will have lived in 2 countries, unless of course just to be obtuse you say 6 months.

You can twist words all you want, but it doesnt matter what you say, I think any reasonable human being can draw a distinction between being purely born (ie paper says) in a country, and actually living there and the affect it will have on you.

you contradict yourself so much its incredible. first you claim I havent lived anywhere, then when I show you wrong you set your own parameters to quantify the question at hand. incredible.

Whats our economy got to do with anything or our Football team and when did this become about what was liveable and what wasnt??? This was about what i am, and because you cannot deny im right, you attack something irrelevant. Yes the Greek economy is up the shitter much like most of Europes, but the people live in comfort, you should know, youve been there and know people who live there right???Lumper wrote:Greece.
