Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
Has anyone heard any more? A progarm called "Soccer Unites" was launched on Saturday.
Was anyone there?
Saw a news item on ABC and another small story in the Sunday Mail.
SAASL got a grant from the Federal Govt. for $135,000 to run soccer clinics for the new African migrants and refugees.

Re: Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
Why would the Government invest $ 135,000.00 on one ethnic group to promote soccer??? What about under priveliged Australian & none African kids & there is lots of them ??? Why do they have to be African Migrants & Refugees??? Not saying they shouldn't do anything for them to promote soccer & give them oppertunities but when was the last time they spent $ 135,000.00 on under priveliged Australian kids...brutus01 wrote:Has anyone heard any more? I tend to agree with Nugget here, such a grant should benefit ALL KIDS and not a minority.nuggett69 wrote:Why would the Government invest $ 135,000.00 on one ethnic group to promote soccer??? I'd suggest because we are viewed internationally as some kind of "racist country" then programs are put in place to show that we're not ? Well if that aint the reason its got me stumped

As a result of a large amount of Africans seeking refuge and citizenship in our country we would assume that all adults entering would have to seek out and engage in some sort of paid work to ensure their sustainability. In doing so that leaves the children they bring over with nothing to do and as a result the government puts these programs into place to give them the best opportunity to learn the skills that children that have already grown up in our society should know.
When a child comes from another country and has different morales and values to what we practice in Australia it is in our best interests to put them in an environment in which they are able to "catch up" on all that things missed out on. Thus giving them the best opportunity to seek out their own employment opportunities once they become adults, as playing sport is the best way to learn the important things like language, team work and social skills.
I'm aware that you would rather the government pump money into a program for everyone however it is not the intention here to give these people a headstart rather a "fair go" which IMO is what the Australian culture is all about.

You can of course provide us with the link to the report to show that what you are saying about it being specifically for African kids is actually correct and that you are not just ranting over some internet rumour?nuggett69 wrote:Why not just spend the money on under priverliged kids in general Iraqi, Australian, African, Afgani ?? Re: Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
Rednecks kids should be given the money. To help them get over the blind ignorance imposed on them by their parents that stand up and say we are the lucky country, and the rest of you can naff off. At the end of the day its about ten bucks per kid that have come from horrific lives to a country that cares. These kids will choose Australia if they make the grade.

1. if this is to help them to "catch up" with Australian culture then why not put them in a situation with other kids who have grown up in Australia. i dont see how segregating them is going to help them adjust. are you saying that if you moved to Africa that the best way to adapt would be to associate only with other migrants from Australia?
2. and also if they are going to do this program, nuggett is right, why not for ALL migrants, why is it just for Africans.

Re: Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
read the posts properly mate. no one has an issue with these kids being given an opportunity. the issue is why is it SPECIFIC to African migrants. it should be for all migrant children. African, Chinese, Serbian, Italian, Greek, English, Irish etc... thats the point.Smokey wrote:Rednecks kids should be given the money. are you saying that if an Iraqi kid or Afghan kid comes to Australia he shouldnt get the same opportunity as the African kid,coz thats the point people are making, Not one of racism

Re: Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
Keep in mind it allows them to play against Australian born children as well as with Aus born children in the near future and I didn't mean to suggest that it was just for Africans but all refugee and migrant families. It also gives them the opportunity to meet children from the same situation as themselves and will allow them a smooth learning path as they have someone to learn with.Outlaw 2.0 wrote:1. if this is to help them to "catch up" with Australian culture then why not put them in a situation with other kids who have grown up in Australia. i dont see how segregating them is going to help them adjust. are you saying that if you moved to Africa that the best way to adapt would be to associate only with other migrants from Australia?bigdawg wrote:As a result of a large amount of Africans seeking refuge and citizenship in our country we would assume that all adults entering would have to seek out and engage in some sort of paid work to ensure their sustainability. Re: Govt grant to Amateur Soccer?
Other than an unsubstaniated comment in the original post nowhere else does it say the program is specifically for African kids. But you seem to really like getting your teeth into it don't you?bigdawg wrote:read the posts properly mate. no one has an issue with these kids being given an opportunity. the issue is why is it SPECIFIC to African migrants.
Back it up with a link or STFU.

i'll encourage you to read my reply to Outlaw 2.0 which is the post prior to yours. in case you have trouble finding that i said "if this is the case then i guess its a good idea. anything to promote the sport in Australia"Mad_Max wrote:Other than an unsubstaniated comment in the original post nowhere else does it say the program is specifically for African kids. so clearly by response there, i was not sure either way, just making the point that nobody was objecting through racism, but only that it should be for all migrants. i see by the link kindly provided by marooned that it would be open for all migrants and therefore nobody seems to have a problem with that. but thank you for your imput champ.
