Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
You should call them ref during the game no matter what. They are there to ref the game and be given the respect that entails (no matter how good or bad they are) and then after the game use their name. During the 90 minutes though they are the ref and you are a number end of story. I would hate hearing a ref calling out a players nickname, would make me think straight away something dodgy is going on, likewise if i hear a player calling the ref by his name.

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
When you watch AFL and the umpires have small wireless microphones they refer to the players by their names which I think at that sort of level is unprofessional for the umpires. It gives a sense that they know each other personally which hints at favoritism.
Usually you don't personally know a ref unless it's your usual volunteer club ref. Which in that case I don't think it's a big deal. It wont effect the outcome of the game.

Is it that big of a deal? As long as you don't abuse him, call him what you like.

Actually, AFL umpires call ALL the players by their names. its not favouritism when you know ALL the names.numéro_octavo wrote:When you watch AFL and the umpires have small wireless microphones they refer to the players by their names which I think at that sort of level is unprofessional for the umpires. Hey Jay,
Your ressie ref pointed right in my face and shouted at me and nearly made me cry on Sunday
Yet, through the tears I still only whimpered 'Yes ref'.........
If I was a ref, and someone tried to call me by my name I'd book them for being an @rse

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
How do the referees prefer to be addressed ? I have refereed some games when the official one hasnt turned up, felt funny when people who know you say Ref, preferred it when they addressed me by my name. Eventually even when players who dont know you find out your first name when you are reffing, start using your name, I think that is a good thing.
How does the referee address the players ? by name , or by the position you play ? ok if you are the keeper, ref says "c'mon keeper get on with it"......wouldnt sound the same if the ref said "c'mon defender,or midfielder or striker "
How do players like to be called ?

Yeah, I thought he was pretty good. Looked to be a bit harder on your own guys than us......
Thought the red was maybe a bit harsh but I wasn't close to it.
I reckon I should have been booked. Especially when I accidentally caught your striker where it hurts.......deliberate foul but meant to only trip him.

I thought the send off was fair. From what I saw, it was late and not near the ball.grouse n' ice wrote:Yeah, I thought he was pretty good. Looked to be a bit harder on your own guys than us......

I think you gotta call the referree ref and try not to use his name, particularly if he is your club ref. I think if he is not from your club then you can address him by name.

what a contradiction.danzo wrote:I think you gotta call the referree ref and try not to use his name, particularly if he is your club ref. I think if he is not from your club then you can address him by name.

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
Not at all. I agree with danzo. Half the thing about reffing is removing the excuses players have to whine. Club refs have enough suspicion surrounding them when they are officiating. If the players from their club are all matey with them, there is more griping from the opposition.Hawkesy wrote:what a contradiction.danzo wrote:I think you gotta call the referree ref and try not to use his name, particularly if he is your club ref. read his comments again, danzo's a great bloke who I have a vast amount of time for but the contradiction on the post is quite clear.

Oop. sorry. Thought he meant if he is an official ref, you can use his name.
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
The referee should not be called by first name at any time during the match.

Good to hear a ref's perspective. I wonder if most refs feel this way. If they do- why don't they say something?Rob Lozza wrote:The referee should not be called by first name at any time during the match.

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
In regards to hearing AFL umpires calling players by their first name...it is a requirement that AFL umpires know every players first name. This is to create better communication between umpires and players. And we all know the best form of officiating is via good communication
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
I'd probably book someone for consistently using my name while I was reff'ing. Ref, God or sir would all be acceptable.
