referee's
First post, so not sure if this has been discussed before. I have watched a set of Saturday matches for the past three weeks and cannot understand why the referee's are so bad....
for each reserves match, the games have started off being neutral, competitive and in good nature, the referee's then start to favour the home side and basically spoils the game. Example of this was at A.Villa V Wanderers, reserves game yesterday which I had the pleasure to watch, The game started off really well, both teams attacking and looking for an opening and was a hard, clean contest, Wanderers took the lead through a well worked goal, they scored a 2nd shortly after, which the referee disallowed for handball, which really baffled everyone who was watching that was for sure. A.Villa then really started to play the ref, and he was happy to blow up everytime they called, dived or just wanted an advantage which started to spoil the game. 2nd half A.Villa came out strong in the 2nd half, equalised, then on the run of play went 2-1 up, still a competitive match, but seemed that if A.Villa wanted a free kick they could just ask the ref., Wanderers should have had a penalty when Villa's keeper keeper decided to clean up one of Wanderers forwards just as he was about to shoot. Wanderers then equalised, not sure how that was given, maybe he thought he would have a riot on his hands as the game was getting quite heated at this stage, anyway ended up 2-2 which was a fair resullt, Villa had most of the ball, but Wanderers had most of the chances.
But the game was just spoilt by the refereeing, I am sure both teams would have had much more enjoyable game if the referee's do not act this way, the game is trying to create an image for players to respect referee's but when they are so biased how can they gain any respect.

Re: referee's
its a tough gig being a referee, pretty much what ever you do you will be critisited. to be fair players now try to influence referees and in some cases it seems to work. some can make the odd unusual decision and some are harder/sorfter than others. from a players point of view i just try and get on with it and keep my mouth shut! can be hard sometimes though

Re: referee's
From a neutral watching, it just spoils the game, when it is so biased. Maybe the league should look at using the clubs refs. to referee other games in their league and not their own, I am sure most of them get paid anyway.sparts wrote:its a tough gig being a referee, pretty much what ever you do you will be critisited. to be fair players now try to influence referees and in some cases it seems to work. some can make the odd unusual decision and some are harder/sorfter than others. from a players point of view i just try and get on with it and keep my mouth shut! can be hard sometimes though

Good idea in theory, but I would think you would have less club refs putting their hand up to do so. You will also find that other club refs are required for other duties on the day, BBQ, nets and pitches, bar etc. I know we have this problem. We get around it by emplyoing a ref whom use to do SAASL games, but does not like the travel ect, so we pay him to do our ressies games when he can, which is most of the time. Has sorted out lots of problems, but still causes a concern from some club regarding bias, it unavoidable.
Re: referee's
Unfortunately most clubs struggle to get volunteers (referees).
Yes bias does naturally (very diplomatic) happen but you can only hope that the better team come out on top by the way they play and not the decisions they do or don't get.
Some club refs are great and are so fair that they give the 50/50's the other way but this is rare to see and some just listen to their own players and blow on what the players call which is very frustrating for all but thats the way it is and its not going to change anytime soon.

For the record the guy who referee'd our game with the grove yesterday in the B grade was outstanding. Probably the best reserves grade refereeing i have seen in many a year. Would be more than happy to have him every week. Congratulations pal on a job well done.

the majority of reserve refs favour their own teams it is just part of the game. works both ways though because their is a home and away fixture!!

Forgot to mention Villa's dissalowed goal which clearly went over the line....I can remember some poor officiating that could be considered as biased from a linesman in the main game also mate.....no whinging on my behalf.oldlazio wrote:First post, so not sure if this has been discussed before. Refereeing 8/10 thus far even with Saturdays disaster (had absolutely nothing to do with the ref!!!!!!!!!).
Re: referee's
Hey Brent what happened yesterday!!
Sounds like a repeat of last year at their ground, must have been worse to get called off.

I feel really sorry for most of the referees in the amateur league!!! It must be a really difficult job for people with no common sense, Intelligence or knowledge of the game of football!!!!!!!!!

Re: referee's
Half the reason why there are no B refs is the constant barrage of abuse from players and supporters, officials and coaches etc.
The SAASL clubs need to lie in the bed they have made for themselves after a long history of providing a hostile environment in which to referee in. You will note most of the A refs are older guys (there are a few younger no doubt) but compare this to the FFSA refs, where there are heaps of younger ones.
These FFSA refs can ref on Sundays for SAASL but they don't - and I'd bet it is because they are scared of the prospect of refereeing even a B game and running the line for A's.
Instead they'll either do a Womens game, an under 11-17 game for FFSA or just do nothing...
When I used to ref, I would do the women's matches and junior matches for the money which I needed as a student, but the games were really early and often boring. You could of got more money and a sleep in in the SAASL but guys just didn't do it for fear of being abused or assaulted.
I know this doesn't apply to all clubs and many clubs are great, but you don't control where you go if you put your hand up - except in the situation rexie has described above and I would encourage all friendly clubs to look at this as a way to solve (or at least) reduce your club referee problems.

as one of the clubs refs for my club, I wouldn't do that for several reasons.oldlazio wrote:From a neutral watching, it just spoils the game, when it is so biased. I do the job to help out my club, not for the league or for other clubs.
I generally ref a game and then play in the following game.
I want to have a beer with my mates after.
If I wanted to do it for other clubs I would join SAASRA and do a first team game.

Re: referee's
Totally agree with the FFSA v SAASL Refs and refs standards...
Ask yourselves what the main differences are and where the SAASL can improve and then you will have your answers!!!
I'm sure i have said this a million times on here...
1. Starting from Div 1 - Use the money in the bank to build separate room for the refs (over a period of 10 years every club should have one)
2. Build fences or temporary fencing at every ground on game day - make this compulsory (at 2-3 metres back from sideline)
3. Either hire security guard for refs or ensure at least 3 white coats from each team on game day to patrol grounds, control crowd behaviour and escort officials to and from grounds
4. Invest in refs by paying more and also paying for better coaching
Good luck to the whistleblowers... tough job...

all of those are overkill or irrelevant and most are impossible, except number 4.

Re: referee's
There is no doubt that refeering the B's is tuff BUT most times its the ref themselves that bring on all the trouble, yeh you expect some biased but sometimes its just plain stoopidy and thats when tempers start to boil, we all just want to play the game and we all just want a fair go, i've been a WOG by an away ref so what type of reaction would you expect from the oppostion club when you here that dribble????

surprise surprise, the SAME linesman did the B game and the A game. Wanderers NEED to get someone who is not pissed and drinking and smoking whilst running the line. Maybe then, he MAY keep up with play!!!

The B team referre is probably the most unbaised ref I have ever had the pleasure of playing with. He is the always calling it fair and does not favour AV at all. i guess when u dont get max points, then the whingeing starts!!
as far as the game goes, AV had a goal disallowed for offside due to the linesman, who was at least 10m behind play flagging it??????
neways, to start a topic about the B team Referee, is disappointing. Most of the boys from wanderers are a good bunch of blokes and were sharing in a few jokes after their game. Its dissapointing that u need to vent ur whingeing on a public forum, considering the B team ref did a great job!
