Pooraka United 1969-1993

Post by swannsong »

Had a PM from someone who played with Pooraka United in their last few seasons (1992, 1993) and their father and uncles also played for the club in the late "70's.
i played against Pooraka a few times in Division 2 and in several Cup games and always found them difficult opponents. Also knew some of the players that played at the Downs, Alan McManus, Harry Dommerdich, Kenny Craig....
One of the older clubs that unfortunately vanished from the SAASL after season 1993.
I think they might have begun as Salisbury Fijians and were playing in 1969 ?

Rob Howe???? WTF   I play cricket with that bloke, and have done for 5 or 6 seasons now. TOP BLOKE and a freak of a cricketer! Has won numerous Div1 and Div2 player of the years in the PDCA.

Anyone here play soccer with/against him? He is a natural at almost anything he tries so I assume he could play a bit on the soccer pitch too.

You're quite correct about the connection with Salisbury Fijian....the club eventually became Pooraka United

I think it was last July we held a re-union of for old players and supporters....was great to catch up with alot of old faces

Paul Breucher at the Downs (over 35's) played in many of the same sides as Rob Howe...he would know him quite well.
I refereed a couple of Smithfield East east games whe Rob was playing.
I remember one game where they had an identikit photo of a wanted person in the Sunday Mail and it was a splitting image of Rob's player pass photo !

Good to see D. Eggers scoring a few back in 1993 and still kicking about in the first team these days.

have been told he was/is a very good keeper. heard a rumour that a Div 2 team approached him to be their reserves keeper this season even though he hasnt played for years. Someone must know something about his ability if this is true

Mr Eggers had a good year in 1995....Division 3 top goalscorer and would have had the B&F if not for a suspension...polled 14 more votes than the winner (team mate I. Hobson ) ouch !
