Bosnian teenager Miralem Pjanic enjoyed a night to remember at the Bernabeu as he scored the goal that sent Olympique Lyonnais through to the last eight of the Champions League at the expense of Real Madrid, and he has revealed that los Blancos’ bold statements in the press acted as a spur to OL.

Merengues ace Sergio Ramos had unashamedly predicted a 3-0 victory for the Spanish club in the second leg, despite being humbled 1-0 in France three weeks ago. What transpired was a 1-1 draw, though Lyon had to ride their luck at times during a first half in which their hosts looked like potential champions. OL responded after the break, with Pjanic’s goal 15 minutes from time the decisive moment of the tie.

“This qualification is good, especially because players of Real Madrid had spoken too much in the press before the game, which really upset us,” the 19-year-old smiled to TF1. “It was hard during the first half but we remained sturdy.

“We’re waiting for the next round now. This Champions League is not over for us.”

It is possible that Lyon might return to the Santiago Bernabeu this season in European action as that is where the final of the Champions League will be held, making defeat a doubly stinging blow for los Blancos. OL will be considered dark horses amongst the final eight.
