Well thats the silliest thing I've ever heard!
SASI Girls in prems? Would that not defy the point of having the restriction on the amount of SASI players per club? Not to mention leave a few clubs overly short of players...

Thats bound to be someone spinning stories just for the heck of it!

I really hope PH will stay in the Prems, a 7 teams league was ugly, a 6 teams league is not even a league...FFSA can't fail so badly after just 2 years!!!

R4L - sasi in Prems will not happen, at least not this year, the clubs would crack the s#1ts and effectively lose their sasi players for the whole season.
The reality is that something like that would only happen if all the sasi players were on full scholarships (wont happen because of funding/budgets), and tbh the league is not strong enough overall for it to be worthwhile for sasi to be playing there.

Bad Egg - either you know something I don't or you cant count? 2009 was an 8 team Prems comp, which may go to 7 ( not 6) in 2010 if PH do actually move to Div1.
However I agree it would be better to have more teams, but if there aren't any which have the ability to field competitive prems & ressies teams then it wont happen yet.

 my bad! I meant 8 teams and going down to 7.
You are right in saying that if there aren't teams the league has to be what it is, but the truth is that there WERE teams...so obviously the FFSA set up/management just does not work! I know it seems like I'm just complaining but not finding any solution...but isn't the FFSA's job to run the competitions??? So my view is that they are not doing a good enough job if the top comp in the state has only 7 teams. Sorry but that's what I think.

I mean, a few years back there were 10 teams in the Prems and there were Prems&Ressies if I'm not wrong...so this actually means that the game is going backwards? When I watch a game, I normally don't think that this is true, last year and the year before I saw some very good games. Plus, with the SASI rule and AU rule clubs can only have so many 'top players'...so where are the others? Do some clubs have 40 prems? Not that I know of at least...Why certain clubs cannot attract or keep their players? Is it just club loyalty or those other clubs are just unable to attract these players, and if so...why? I think FFSA still don't have a clue as every year they seem to change the rules but what are they doing for long-term? How can it possibly be that lower division teams (like Metro in the cup final) trash D1 clubs?

looks like a few new clubs will be entering, Ingle Farm and Brahma Lodge have popped up on here. Anyone heard of any others? Will they all have to go into Div 5? Any clubs nominating extra teams this year?

I think there should be 6 teams in the women's premier league....what is the point of having 7 or 8 teams in a league, and have the 2 bottom teams get smashed by the rest of the teams?

I say have 6 'strong' teams, making the competition stronger and increase the standard. I know as a player, I would rather play in highly competitive challenging games every Sunday, not every second sunday. I think this would help players develop and even make our Adelaide United team stronger.

What do others think?

I do like the idea of having 6 'strong' teams in the Prems league, but looking back at last season, both Campbelltown & Para Hills pulled out some wins against some of the 'stronger' teams. They've both got potential, and if we want to grow our womens game, we need to be giving as many girls as possible, to play in the highest league available to them. If they have the players to field two teams, and are up for the challenge, let them play! Anything can happen, and a few of the 'strong' teams I think got a shock to their system when they expected an easier game against one of the bottom teams.

Update: Apparently the sasi girls were told last night that they will be playing in the boys U16B comp again - this is a more appropriate comp for their development, which is what it's all about isn't it?

On another point I am not sure exactly where the responsibility lies for the 'decline' in the number of teams in the Premier League. Yes FFSA need to promote the game and attract players to Football, but also the clubs need to do their bit and attract or develop players, have a club setup which can support this, etc.
Having said that, from a outsider's viewpoint I thought PH seemed to be accross these points for 2010, but still it would seem there is doubt as to whether they will be in Prems/Res in 2010.

Neits makes a point which has some validity, but playing 'devils advocate' I would suggest another possible scenario is that all the 'best/serious' players would gravitate towards the 6 prems clubs, further weakening the other clubs outside of the top 6 and perhaps creating the perception that no other clubs will be good enough to mix it with them in the Premier League?

No simple answer really.....

i agree with what burgo said.
in satying this, yes its true that the bottom of the table teams do get a win over the stronger teams every now and then, but yeah i think the stronger the league the better.
and 6 teams isnt so bad, for instance up here there are a grade leagues in other sport that only have 4 teams. can get tedious but its a great competition.

There is no simple answer. However if the bullet is not bitten now, this situation will never improve football in South Australia.

Yes a reduced number of teams in the Premier League would see serious players gravitate to clubs in Premier League, and Premier Reserves. For the better of Football overall. A Super League.

The reality is that not many clubs will ever attain "Super League" status. In the future due to population growth in the deep south and far north teams/clubs probably will come from these areas into 'Super League"

The standard of Womens football in this state will lift dramatically with a Super League,( we often hear about players in lower division teams with supposed real ability well here is the oppotunity to step into the real world) and an extremely strong and competive 2nd tier division of say 12 teams.

Letting more Clubs start up is not the answer. Strengthen the ones already there.

Hey this is actually an interesting topic! I think that it's nice to play challenging games every week, but also that PH and C'town gave teams a run for their money last year and they are getting better and better.

How can it possibly be that lower division teams (like Metro in the cup final) trash D1 clubs?
The other thing is...why don't fringe players from some clubs or younger players who wouldn't be in the Prems in their club go to these smaller ones? I think this would really be the only way to make the small clubs stronger, having experienced players go there and establish themselves as leaders, but instead senior players stay in lower divisions in their clubs to be loyal to their clubs and stay with their friends. That's why some strong club D2 team can easily beat a D1 team in the cup final! Personally I would prefer to go to a small club and play Prems every week than stay in D2 or 3 with a bigger club, but sometimes players like to stay around and play more socially, so D2 or 3 are good options and you can stay in your club.

6 teams is not great for a "Premier" division TBH. I think 10-12 should be more acceptable but if thats all that is available then i'd hope that all the teams are competitive to make it a decent competition

We need to focus on Quality, not quantity.

Has anyone else noticed the gap between the standard of Premier League and Reserves? It is far too big. There are only a couple of clubs which have a small gap between their 2 teams.

Having 6 teams in Premier League, each with a Reserves side, both leagues would be stronger, more competitive, more challenging. Get the players from teams like Para Hills, Campbelltown to go to the other 6 clubs, but only the ones who are serious about the sport. Our Premier League still has a very social culture, and once we are able to remove that aspect and make it a bit more profressional and serious, women's football in SA will never reach the levels of NSW, QLD etc, or even get close to it.

Yes I understand Para Hills and Campbelltown city had a couple of good wins each last season, but we need to focus on the majority. Should we be trying to focus on the top 6 clubs, or let there be 8-10 teams just so we can develop and not leave out the bottom sides? Premier League is the top league in SA, we need to make sure it can be as consistently competitive as possible.

Sometimes we have to be cruel to some clubs so we can be kind to others, just so we can get the results and required standards and performances.

Im sure the girls that play at campbelltown and para hills are serious about the sport. As well as other clubs outside of the premier league.

im sure that there are girls that are involved with prem clubs that wouldnt be 100% serious either.

you cant force girls to move clubs either, and what happens if one of the 6 clubs start to struggle? get rid of them and make it a 5 team league?

the biggest issue facing the sport is the keeping players every year and attracting new players to the game. soccer is a lot more then just being about the top division.

I am sure there are also players from campbelltown and para who are serious and I am also sure that some are just there for social reasons....and I agree that some players from the top teams in the Premier League are not 100% serious either, one of the many frustrations of their team mates who are serious. Those types of players get dropped to reserves, a league possibily better suited to them.

There will always be a team that comes last, who doesnt win as many games as others, but we need to find a way to make the difference in points between the top 6 teams and bottom 2 a lot smaller.

With a smaller amount of teams in the league, teams like metro would be able to keep their w-league players because the rule could possibly be changed to 4 or 5 players instead of just 3. All of this with out making the league unfair because every other team in the league would have more depth, quality.

If players are serious about the sport and want to get better, some times they have to move from their current club. many players have had to do it, but its a sacrifce that sometimes needs to be made.

To have competitive teams you need competitive players. To achieve this you need good experienced coaches and guidelines how to develop young players into competitive and good skilled players. This means clubs have to be more serious about the development of players in their younger years. There are only a few windows in a players carrier where they can develop and grow into better players. As a suggestion why can't FFSA provide a dvelopment plan outlining all necessary skill and development training for all clubs to ensure everybody will produce similar quality of players. Each club is doing things in different ways. Some clubs are more social than others and therefore players are not interested to play high level of soccer. Premier clubs should have more of elite ( yes elite if you want to play high level soccer ) program to achieve high quality of players.
Most good players you see around actually do additional coaching lessons throughout the year to become more skillfull players and also maybe picked earlier for SASI and national duties.

Without having good tools you will not have a quality finish. If you like to be more competitive you have to put more time and efforts into your dvelopment. However without good qualified coaches and clubs who are not interested to achieve higher level of competition we will still complaining and discussing these issues and nothing will change.

I don't know...many ppl complain about state coaches who are not bringing anything to the players. Don't coaches get their 'tools' when they do their coaching licences? But yeah, some clubs care more about their juniors than others. Cumby for example always tries to develop their youngsters but then many of them seem always to move to other clubs. Not having a go at Cumby at all, the opposite actually, but what happens if they struggle because their team is always so young...are they gonna go in D1 too?

Here there are possible solutions:
1 get rid of the Premier League altogether and just play a carnival of elite players every week at santos stadium
2 just have 4 mega-clubs with 3 teams each and just play each other all the time
3 just have 2 or 3 mega-clubs with a million senior players and play in some boys league of their election...

In my opinion the most experienced coaches should actually coach the youngest players to ensure skill development is done correct from start of a players carrier.

Not neccessarily are State Coaches " better " coaches. A lot of good coaches left the system and clubs due to politics, committe's and player's/parents attitude.

Coaches with the right "tools" are coaches which developed their knowledge and skill basis beyond their coaching lisence level. How many coaches develop over the years their skill base or knowledge or just do the same over and over again.

These days to be a "good" technical and knowledgable coach a lot of time is going into a coaches development. Not many coaches are interested to spend more time as they allready do due to other committments.

It comes down at the end to pay good coaches more money as already some clubs are doing to gain the advantage to have better skilled and developed players in the future.

Unfortunately this is a sign of our time that less people are interested to get into voluntary positions due to lack of time or knowing how stressfull coaching can be.

i guess a benefit from this is, if its just 6 STRONG clubs playing, new players may be able to bolster the Lady Reds squad for the upcoming season and the current squad members will every week be put to the test.
