Adrian Mutu fails second drugs test

January 28, 2010

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) has announced Fiorentina forward Adrian Mutu has failed a drugs test for the second time in his career.

Mutu, 31, provided a sample following a Serie A game against Bari in January 10 and traces of the substance sibutramine were found.

Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant and was recently banned from use in the UK amid fears that the drug could increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

A statement on CONI's website read: "CONI announces that a positive test has been confirmed on Adrian Mutu with the presence of metabolics of sibutramine found in tests done by the FIGC on January 10 after the Serie A game between Fiorentina and Bari."

Reports in Italy claim Mutu could be facing a ban of between one and four years as he contemplates the second drugs-related controversy of his career.

In 2004, Mutu tested positive for cocaine and was sacked by Chelsea, as well as being suspended from football for seven months. He subsequently joined Juventus before moving on to Florence in 2006.

In July 2009 the Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered Mutu to pay Chelsea £14.6 million for breaching his contract by taking the illegal drug.

Yep I agree & so he should anyway. People gave Chelsea $hit for sacking him but as we see, it was the perfect decision.

never ceases to amaze me how many people like to comment without all the facts on the table. The guy deserves the benefit of the doubt until all investigations are completed, but hey easier to shot from the hip.
Adrian Mutu could be cleared after tests show banned substance sibutramine was not on the label of his herbal diet pills.
According to the Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, the Fiorentina star is mounting his defence after failing two drugs tests this month against Bari and Lazio.

He tested positive for sibutramine, a hunger suppressant, and several Viola figures have confirmed it was traced back to herbal diet pills he took in Romania over Christmas.

Mutu is sending the supposedly all natural pills to the laboratory for testing and it’s reported sibutramine was found, even though it is not stated on the label.

If this is proved, then Mutu would be able to show he took the banned substance by mistake and was in good faith.

It’s particularly crucial because the former Chelsea star already has a seven-month ban on his record for cocaine use.

“Adrian was naive, but absolutely in good faith,” commented Coach Cesare Prandelli.

“I saw the packet of these pills with my own eyes and there is nothing to suggest any banned substance, or indeed that it contains anything other than all natural ingredients.”
I don't like lies. I have understood your market where sometimes lies sell more than truth. This is your life and I don't like it. I understand your work and I have to work with you, but the protection of my group is much more important than you

I agree with that but surely his doctor would know that this substance is illegal.

the substance "sibutramine" is on the ban list, but Mutu's defence is he was taking an all natural product than had no reference to "sibutramine" on the list of ingredients.

Obviously a stupid thing to do and he should have got it cleared BEFORE he took it as he's got too much at stake, but if his defence is true it's no different to walking into a Chinese restaurant and getting pinned for one of the ingredients they use in their MSG or ancient remedies

Fiorentina are not too hopeful he will get off judging by the fact he is out of the Champions League squad. But it does give them room to include new signing Kerrison.

Complete bullshit. Chelsea tested him illegally in the first place, and have treated him disgracefully ever since.

Yep, this:

Invasion of privacy or whatever it was. Chelsea had no authority to do drug tests on their players - only the FA can.
