Whole of the Ball
I was just thinking about this the other day....In tennis the ball is out when no part of the ball is in contact with the line.
In football the law says the whole of the ball is over the line....does it have adefinition of what "over the line" is.
I've always understood it to mean that if you draw an imaginary line at right angle to the outer part of the line...the whole of the ball needs to be outside of that imaginary line...
Discuss..

Re: Whole of the Ball
Yes, that imaginary part of the line as you describe I would say is what matters. I think that when the ball is along the ground, for example, the part of the ball that actually touches the ground needs to be fully over the line, as opposed to the full circumference which may appear only partially (although naturally the greater part) over the line to the naked eye. Does that make sense?

Re: Whole of the Ball
The whole of the ball has to cross the whole of the line. The width of the line has to be the same as the width of the goalposts.
If some portion of the ball is over the line the ball is not out, even if the bit touching the ground it out. The problem we have in South Australia is that the lines aren't always straight.

Okay there are other problems, but with regards to his issue this is probably the problem. That and players/coaches/fans who don't understand the concept of the rule or aren't on the line and don't have as good a view as the linesman.

Re: Whole of the Ball
the best definition is a birds eye view from directly on top. If you can see the whole of the ball on the 'out' side of the line while being able to see the whole of the line, then the ball is out. Otherwise, its in.

Or, to speak frankly, realistically, and with tongue in cheek - when the AR flags, it's out; when they don't, it's not.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

And if one doesnt quite agree with that, the standard "Oi, linesman, that wasnt fucking out" usually follows.

Not sure that this confirms your point.First Yellow Card wrote:But confirms my point about the lines not being straight
Viewed from above the line may be perfectly straight...but from ground level may appear uneven due to the contour of the surface !

An example of straight lines appearing to be irregular.

Initially I thought there was a tree on the pitch but obviously it's just Fellaini's hair.
