can see it being like when i was in germany at the last world cup. some idiot had an australian strip on, and then after the game in the stands took it off to reveal an italy strip. the crowd went crazy (as they should) george negus was furious and nearly boxed on with him (as he should).
if incidents like this happen all over australia then it will be a disgrace. if australia werent in the world cup, by all means support whoever. but australia are in, and unless you were born overseas, then to me you are australian, so show the country some respect and actually support the team.

The opening match will involve either the hosts or the current holders so this scenario will never happen.vladimirbeara wrote:I don,t know yet, I'm waiting 2014 for the opening match of World Cup, Croatia-Bosnia

I know a bloke who took his Cro top off to reveal an Aussie strip after the 2-2 draw in 2006...some people will do anything to be interviewed on TV.Ronnie wrote:can see it being like when i was in germany at the last world cup. some idiot had an australian strip on, and then after the game in the stands took it off to reveal an italy strip. the crowd went crazy (as they should) george negus was furious and nearly boxed on with him (as he should).

Settle balkan boys, settle. As I told those 5RTI Saturday soccer-football show guys, your homes are here, your jobs are here, you went to school here, some of you were probably born here and you'll never go to live permanently in Europe. So there's no question it's Australia first - then Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Italy etc second while remaining proud of our background heritage...

Fortunately (or unfortunately really), Poland failed to qualify making it easy decision for me. In reality, I would always choose Australia first and foremost. I dont begrudge anyone if they were born in another country to support their birthplace though.

Re: Attention Forum "Aussie Serbs"
This is the honest truth, when Croatia played Australia in 2006, it was was an unbelievable experience and atmosphere, which made it even better for us with 6.5 Aussie/Cro's in the Aussie team, and 3 Cro/Aussie's in the Cro team. I dont think any other combination of countries could even come close to that
So honestly, I wasnt really barracking for any of the 2 during the actual game itself, but I knew I was going to be very upset for the team that missed out, knowing one of the them, at the end of 90mins, was going home
If you call that sitting on the fence, well it was a farken 20 foot high fence

Only England and South Africa (in the cricket) would come close (or surpass it actually)Zeljko Jurin wrote:This is the honest truth, when Croatia played Australia in 2006, it was was an unbelievable experience and atmosphere, which made it even better for us with 6.5 Aussie/Cro's in the Aussie team, and 3 Cro/Aussie's in the Cro team. That's ok, Zeljko my son. And bomber, sure we don't begrudge them backing the country of their grandparents, but the true test is when say, OZ plays Greece or Serbia or Croatia or Italy. It should be OZ every time. Otherwise we are not a country and a community - just an economy with a collection of many nationalities here as economic refugees.
Ps, Zeljko, I remember those games @ Olympic Sports Field. My parents lived next door on the Norwood Parade. And the hill bar @ Hindmarsh, killa.

And the hill bar at Hindmarsh - many a funny story there. Sad part was I used to spill quite a few beers trying to get back up to the "hill" alongside the floodlight to watch the games in the days!

Yep, Zeljko - plenty of smoke from the flares would drift over but there was always more at Somers St Sunshine stadium whenever we visited Melbourne Croatia. Nah, my parents came with a battered suitcase and my little sister too, with me as a snotty-nosed older kid that had to quickly learn to be an interpreter. My mention of 'grandparents' in the thread was in having a mild go at the kids born here, whose parents were born here too and yet who still barrack against the Socceroos, no matter who they're playing.. ps, Bomber I too like the collection of diverse nationalities and like sparring with you guys, but are we are country or an economy? Bit deep?

Many of us are still second or third generation Oz. Over time, this will develop and one day we could be both an economy and country. Too often (especially amongst more recent arrivals), they still hold the "old country" to heart and find it harder and longer to "assimilate" to the Ozzie way. I know if I suddenly went to live overseas now, I'd still be an Aussie at heart. But if I embraced the new country and had kids born there, I would certainly be mindful of raising them in the traditions of the new country. Having said that, I could never imagine living anywhere else than here.

I am talking about the soccer not about bombs. But Jurin, if you want to know, Yes Serbs and all antifascist countries WERE brothers in arms during the both WW. I have nothing to do with the true that Croats were on wrong sides, as you can see on ANZAC DAY.
Who knows, maybe even Croats will be on right side one day and we should see them on ANZAC as well.
In South Africa, the same as in ANZAC, no Croats.

Easy one for me, I was born in Aust, but my parents were born in Europe (Hungarian). They came here to create a new life for there family and have suceeded. I am now the father of two very Aussie boys.
So whilst I do look at the results of the Hungarian team, I class myself as Australian and support Australia in all sports against all nations.
