Free To Air Football

Post by the gloves are off !! »

Some of you might have thoughts on this subject.
I think the big issue about amateur football is not whether players are paid or not, but the fact that you don't have to pay to see a good game.
Kids get a taste for football by being able to watch a game for free, kick around in the goals at half time or just muck around with other kids whose dads, or mums play football.
On that note,It's a sad state of affairs when our national league, and now the national team will get no free to air coverage, just compare how much AFL is shown free to air.
Sure, offer more options on pay tv, but get the kids interested first. Channel 9 could have made a real fist of the National League if Mr. AFL wasn't at the helm.

i just dont think the a-league would rate enough for 9 to televise at a decent hour, they certainly wouldnt show it live. they even delay the friday night footy, wimbledon and test matches from england to keep some of the other crap on. the national team should have been protected by law but sbs couldnt compete with the huge $ put in by foxtel (some of which eventually might filter back to grass roots) and the a-leauge is a commercial product as with the afl, basketball, netball. the afl does rate, hence the big $'s by 7,9,10.

the FFA can't be blamed for taking the money
no free to air station would show the a-league anyway
in fact , they would be more likely to buy the rights and they bury it as channel 7 admitted in court to doing in the past
the fact that the socceroos games were thrown in is the only sticking point

we all know Johnny Howard will ensure free to air cricket
but for all other sports the solution is simple
just set up a phone poll type line and if the government gets enough response then they buy the rights from fox on a one off basis and put it on abc or sbs
x number of calls means they show it and they pay foxtel a fixed price for the one off rights
foxt recoups some bucks and everyone gets to see it
its a no brainer

I think the point I was making was missed.
Most of the soccer players from our generation gained their interest for football from free to air coverage of football or we were migrants from countries where football was THE sport. We were able to see players we wanted to emulate (on match of the day).
Kids today may have parents who are not interested in paying for football. Down the track we will have a generation of kids who only get to see AFL.
Maybe FOXTEL will market the product well, we can only wait and see!
Also, I didn't say that I didn't have FOXTEL, that was just your assumption.

Yea, assumption is a muthafucka... but to be honest, I didn't even read your original post...

Why do they call it free to air TV?. It is commercial TV and we pay the price for it when we buy the products that are advertised on commercial TV? So in essence we are paying for tv as we know the cost of advertising is very high and that is how these stations make the money they do. let them fight for the rights the greedy bastards. Long live Pay TV.

You fools,
I'm not bagging Pay TV. Pay TV can have what it wants. I just think down the track it will have an impact on young kids getting drawn into the game.
I guess it's better than no coverage at all but while AFL, Tennis, Cricket, Cycling, etc can be accessed free to air why shouldn't soccer.
It's like health insurance, you still have a choice, medicare or, private!
John Oneill could have struck a deal with Pay and Free TV.
How many juniors are going to see any of the money Foxtel has thrown at football. Time will tell.
Observer, it's called free to air TV because it costs nothing (apart from electricity and the TV itself) for you to watch. How gullible you are to be sucked in by advertising is your problem, deal with it!

How do you justify the mass commercial advertising that is now on foxtel then?
