Violence in Bosnia leaves one dead, 22 injured

Post by marcNRG »

Bosnian Premier League match called off following violent clashes between soccer fans and police in southwestern town of Siroki Brijeg

One soccer fan was killed and 22 people, including 12 policemen, injured in clashes before a Bosnian Premier League match on Sunday in the southwestern town of Siroki Brijeg, police said.

The game between Sarajevo and Siroki Brijeg was called off after several hundred Sarajevo fans threw stones at shop and bar windows in the centre of the Croat-dominated town, demolishing several cars and setting a police vehicle on fire.

Fans who arrived from the majority Muslim city of Sarajevo clashed with police and 24-year-old Vedran Puljic was killed, the regional police said.

Mostar is known for soccer violence and observers said that most of the regional police were focused on Sunday in the town to prevent possible problems during the Premier League derby between rivals Zrinjski and Velez.

Mostar has been divided between Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats since the end of the 1992-95 war, with Muslims supporting Velez and Croats Zrinjski.

Its tragic when a football supporter comes home in a body bag from a football match.

Very sad that ethnic violence attaches itself to football.

Every thing in BiH is attached to "ethnicity"...the ironic thing is, and I could be wrong here - but judging by the name of the deceased, he may well be a "Bosnian Croat" supporter of FK Sarajevo.

It's a sad situation - but here's a thought - maybe if these so called "supporters" just went to the stadium to cheer on their side rather than going into the town centre smashing windows and causing as much damage as they could, their mate would still be alive...and there might have even been a match played.

Not that all the blame can be aimed at them - it's obvious in this situation that the football federation of BiH and the authorities have made a massive error scheduling two "high risk" matches on the same weekend...Siroki Brijeg looks to have been under policed because of this, as their special units were all in Mostar helping police the "high risk" Mostar "derby" between Zrinjski & Velez...where there was no trouble. If there ain't enough police in the region, why schedule the matches on the same day?

big mistake by the federation.. but they are a bunch of clowns. If we get the Croats in the Playoffs for the world cup i expect another war to break out. People in that region are a bunch of lost causes and i'm from there.. quite sad.

No much chance of that happening - I doubt we'll qualify for the play-off's the way we are playing at the moment - add to that all our injuries and I can see us dropping points to Borat & Co.

I don't support violence at any football match, and I agree Millwall and West Ham game was a disgrace.

But tell me why does violence have to be attached to football?

Maybe if the punishment was few years hard labour in something like a military prison might sort out these morons from all countries.

people honestly don't understand that it's not just a game to these fans/ultras, it's a way of life, they struggle to survive all or most of their money is spent on match tickets/away trips etc. this is their family and their brotherhood. not just going to watch 22 men kick a football around.

Lots of fans in Europo save all their money to go to games etc, but don't resort to violence.

football fans in general are treated worse then the general public, like criminals. i don't condone fighting and killing, but we don't know the circumstances do we so who are we to comment?

They certainly fit the mental picture of the modern football hooligan.
