Re: Adelaide United
To me it looked like a game between 2 sides that while they were working hard they just haven't really become 'teams' yet, despite fairly long preparations.
End result was reasonably competant display, but hardly inspiring.
With such a short season I hope the AU team starts to 'gel' more soon, because with the mixture of players they have there is the potential for them to create some upsets against other teams this year and prove that SA can produce great womens football players and teams.

Sian McClaren, Ang Fimmano, Ruth Wallace, Ashlee Faul, and Rach Quigley - not all are currently with national squads, but have been recently.
...and yes 2 of them were not there on Monday afternoon.
(apologies for spellings if I made some mistakes)
Re: Adelaide United
Obviously I was. Yes they did have a few decent chances but didn't capitalise. They only had 1 up front with 5 midfielders, two very wide with the intentions to attack when necessary but rarely did I see both players from midfield assisting the one striker. Another observation is that the team didn't communicate in regards to pressing. On many occasions you had the lonesome striker running back and forth pressuring the four defenders however, it was wasted energy. It's a lot easier to keep the ball off one player then it is for one player to win the ball from four players, hence more pressure was needed. However, I do understand it was the first game and I hope the next game will see further improvement.Joe Bloggs wrote:were u at the same game? United had the best 2 chances in the game, hitting the post twice! The closest shot from Newcastle was about 25 metres out, good defending in numbers.
Looked to me they had 3 up front, with 2 quick players out wide & Mj centrally. They will all improve as they play more games together. The little blonde at right back played a great game.
Keep it up girls!
Re: Adelaide United
Latest signing update; Nenita Burgess.
That means there is still one spot to be filled, if it will be filled.

Mclaren, Quigley and Fimmano were all utilised however Fimmano did not start, if that's what you're implying?
Wallace and Faul were away with National duties so hence, could not be used.
Re: Adelaide United
That's what I meant when I said 2 were'nt there. Suppose I should have been more specific?
Re: Adelaide United
Mariners goals did not come until after the 70min mark of the game so the girls did really well to hold them off that long...
I am told everyone played really well and were unlucky with a couple of the shots hitting the crossbar and side posts again....

i want to no y bexis isnt starting over mj?
mj is a great player but has just returned from along time away from the game.
Bexis if im not mistaken won women player of the year in South Australia and also came runner up in top goal scorer, so y isnt she starting????
thoughts
Re: Adelaide United
Maybe he'd rather bring Bexis on to finish running out the game?
MJ has been away from the game for a long time, and after a knee recon, perhaps MB is still playing it safe, letting her start and have a good run, because shes still a great player!
Perhaps MB feels that MJ is more prone to injury after the knee recon, so he'd rather bring on another player to run out the game.
Sorry if that doesnt make much sense! I know what im trying to say, I just cant explain it properly!

ye that cld b true but if we need 2 score goals 2 win the game its not happening atm soo then in my opinion they shld change the forward structure to a 442 formation or give bexis a start and c wat she can do?
Re: Adelaide United
I couldnt agree more. I wasnt defending MB's decisions, I would also love to see Bexis in the starting lineup, and think that a 4-4-2 formation would create more scoring options!

Re: Adelaide United
AU 0
MV 2
I thought the girls tried hard, but if they wanted to create scoring opportunities...well they didn't create one!!! Papa's absence was important, although R. Quigley played very well in the mid. When Bexis came on things changed a bit, it's a joke that she's on the bench IMO.
I liked N. Burgess, R. Harrison, K. Bexis, and T. Bolaer. D. Cokayne so and so. Terrible mistakes from S. McLaren (who is obviously a good gk but both goals were her fault IMO). A. Fimmano seemed very weak in the middle, was she sick or something?
Hope to see a less boring game next time.

Lady Reds go down to Melbourne at Hindmarsh Stadium
Sunday, 18 October 2009
Adelaide United FC’s Women’s Team has gone down 2-0 to Melbourne Victory Women in Round 3 of the 2009 Westfield W-League at Hindmarsh Stadium this afternoon.
The visitors proved too strong in the end for United’s Women, who put up a gallant fight and continued to challenge sides but without anything to show for it.
The match became a tussle of the midfields, with both sides looking to take the advantage, when in the 29th minute Victory’s Katrina Gorry took aim from the edge of the area, Adelaide goalkeeper Sian McLaren looked to have it covered, but the ball somehow squeezed between her legs to find the back of the net, to Gorry’s surprise.
The second half became an arm wrestle, with Adelaide frustrated with the solid Victory defence as Maika Ruyter-Hooley repelled everything the Reds threw at her, to frustrate the Adelaide attack. Reds Donna Cockayne and Angela Fimmano found the going tough trying to breakdown the Victory defence.
The game was all but over in the 81st minute when substitute Selin Kurulay picked up a loose ball just outside the penalty area, and smashed it over the head of keeper McLaren to give Melbourne their first away victory.
United have yet to score a goal in the 3 matches so far, but not from a lack of trying. Reds coach Michael Barnett will continue to work with his young Adelaide side, hoping their first win of the season is not too far away.
The Lady Reds are at home again next Saturday when they take on Perth Glory Women at Hindmarsh Stadium. Kick-Off is at 2.30pm (ACDT).
Match Details
Adelaide United Women 0
Melbourne Victory Women 2 (Katrina Gorry 29th, Selin Kurulay 81st))

Re: Adelaide United
thought melbourne played an excellent game, AU have definately improved from last season no doubt there which is good to see seemin the high turnover of players from last season.
