AUvsState?

Post by southern »

Heard AU are playing their first game vs women this week.
I think it's a curtain raiser for the men's game on Friday.
Who are they actually playing though?
I know it's supposed to be a state team, but heard it's mostly made up by D1 and D2 players...if that's so, what kind of test is this supposed to be for AU?
Maybe I'm wrong, just a lot of second and third hand information!
Also, who's playing for AU?! Anybody knows?

Hopefully it's gonna be a good game to watch! It's always great to play at Hindmarsh :D
What times kick off?

AU squad so far:

McLaren
Blackburn
Faul
Kezios
Weidenbach
Boaler
Chapman
L. Chilvers
Cockayne
Fimmano
Kuhar
Papageorgiou
Wallace
Bexis
Quigley

Some aren't from Adelaide so not all these players will be available I guess.
Is anyone else going to be in AU squad other than these ones? There are many more players still training with AU, maybe they will be playing in the State team instead?

I couldn't find anything on AU website or the ffsa one...

I just went back on the ffsa website and I couldn't find a mention of the game or the state team...Is it an ffsa team or what? Strange if it's a state team that there is nothing at all on the website!

I was planning on coming down to watch the AU vs State game. Had a look on the Adelaide United website, where there is no mention of the curtain raiser, so I rang the Adelaide United office to see what time KO was.
The woman there informed me that W-League didn't commence until the October long weekend.
When I said there was an exhibition match on she had no idea what I was talking about and had to put me on hold to check. She eventually came back and confirmed it all for me.

What I would like to know, is that if Adelaide United don't know what's going on how do they expect anyone else to know?

clubs dont know either.
players have been contacted directly, and even then players have been finding out info second hand for the state team.

Nope, it's Georgia Chapman. Amy Chapman did her knee not that long ago or something, apparently.

I think it's pretty poor form that the information related to the trial games for the W-League has been handled so poorly. It just give more ammunition to those who would argue that women/girls' football is somewhat of an afterthought (even a non-thought) for the FFSA. There are those who might argue that nothing has changed in the transition between SAWSA and the FFSA. I would beg to differ.

True and that tells us that they know that last year they really st***ed up!
Last year was terrible, they should have known much better IMO. Let's hope that now they get on the right track...

If AU doesn't even know/care that the girls play a curtain raiser tho...this is not a good start!
I'm pretty positive that at Metro or City or Fulham they would know damn well if some juniors are playing before their Prems...Maybe because THEY CARE!!!!

in mike/richies defence - it was there first season taking on women....

u cant expect them to make a perfect switch from men to women - two totally different playing fields really.....
so imo i dont think they "stuffed up" - i think they were "learning"
and when you are learning - u have to crawl before u walk.....

mike and rich would have got the info from sawsa on who the players that should be picked, they did not know much about the womans game before that, so really the administrators are more to blame then these two , lets give them a chance this year as they have more control

im all for giving them a chance and letting them learn from the mistakes.

realistically but, i dont think aufc have much chance of winning the league. that being said, building a squad like this is the best way to set us up for future success in future years to come.

Sure the coaches have a better perspective on the Womens game at the higher level. Hopefully the players now understand that 90 minutes at this level requires a much higher fitness level to maintain pressure on the opposition and also to execute their own skills for this period of time under the same pressure.

From the AU website

SA's best female players to feature in Curtain RaiserThursday, 27 August 2009

Donna Cockayne in action for the Lady Reds last season.
James Knowler © Getty Images This Friday (28 August 2009) Hindmarsh Stadium will showcase the best in South Australian women’s football, when Adelaide United’s W-League squad takes on the Football Federation South Australia (FFSA) Senior Women’s State Team, in a curtain raiser to Adelaide United’s Round 4 Hyundai A-League match against North Queensland Fury.

The friendly, which will kick off at 4.45pm (ACST), will give the Lady Reds a solid hit out leading into its opening match of the Westfield W-League season on October 5 against Newcastle Jets, while also giving players from the FFSA Senior Women’s State Team a chance to impress and push for possible selection in The Reds’ W-League squad.

The concept has been created in order to encourage continued talent identification of female players in South Australia and increase the depth of talent available to Adelaide United’s Women’s team.

All 15 of the confirmed Lady Reds’ 2009 signings will be available for the match, including the three Queensland based players United Women’s Coach Mike Barnett has signed in the off season (Ruth Blackburn, Georgia Chapman and Tenneille Boaler).

Barnett has a maximum of five spots still left to fill on his roster before the season, meaning Friday night’s curtain raiser will be an ideal opportunity for un-signed players to impress and prove they have what it takes to mix it in Australia’s elite women’s competition, the Westfield W-League.

“Friday’s game is a great opportunity for our players to come together as a team for the first time and to be able to play at Hindmarsh, the home of football in South Australia,” Barnett said.

“We still have a couple of spots left on our player roster, so this game will be the last chance for a couple of the girls to prove themselves.”

“Our opposition is the Senior Women’s State side, with a majority of the players currently training with our W-League team, so hopefully we can witness some potential talent to be signed for Adelaide United.”

Tickets for the curtain raiser and Adelaide United’s Hyundai A-League match against North Queensland Fury are available now through Venue*Tix (call 8225 8888, online at http://www.venuetix.com.au). Adelaide United 12 Game Memberships are also on sale now through Venue*Tix.
