Well said Sid, I totally agree with you.

How many coaches give there players feed back as to why there better players get most of the game time and why some don't, you have 11 players on the pitch and all have an impotant part to play isn't that what a team is about. IMO development should be about learning and being coached, equal opportunity's how else does one improve.
Young lads all develope at such different rates, most lads will thrive if given the chance to have as much time on the pitch as the "so called better players"

A coach can dictate a lads perfomance and confindence

The funny thing is that half the time the coaches get it wrong - many young junior stars go to oblivion. If coaches developed their players equally then the chances of Oz producing a quality player actually increases. Many potentially good players leave the system because a coach didn't back them (I'm taking juniors). And rarely do coaches give any feedback on a players weaknesses (which generally are obvious and in fact the player is the last to find out) and actually work one on one with the player on that weakness. Plenty of capable parents would be willing to help with this task, after all it improves the team. Without working on players weaknesses how can you improve the player. And if players can't handle their weaknesses being pointed out (providing steps are put in place to address them) then they have no future.

Coaches jobs are to develop all 15 players in their team. If you don't attempt to do that then you haven't done your job even if your team finishes top.

I would not have thought so.

But it depends on what the Coach expects of his formation/players. To say that they are out of the way is.... well, it's poor darts, I would have thought.

Yeah that is just stupid, and the coach shouldn't be coaching if that what they do or go back and learn something by playing the game. It's 11v11...isn't it !!

but if you've got a big strapping striker that can score why would you bother with your fullbacks, just lump it up the park and the rest will take care of itself. oh shiit did someone say 11 v 11???

Good luck to Modbury Juniors with 11s and 16 coaching appointments for next year.

Seems lots of people have opinons as to who are the good junior development coaches? Not sure what basis people are using to judge the coaches?

IMO .... many coaches say things like "we are currenty X on the table OR we finished such and such last year" thinking that this is the primary indicator of their success as a junior coach. Results of good junior development may or may not become visible and result in success immediately.

How often do you hear junior coaches say something like - Five of my players achieved the objective of improving the use of their non-preferred foot during game, or all of my players acheived their season objective to understand and play in 4 positions etc, etc. (these are only examples - may not be best examples). How many junior coaches actually have documented development plans for each of their players that is regularly reviewed with the players throughout the season?

Never heard a junior coach say any of the above unfortunately and thats why Oz does not develop many players of adequate skill level (conversely Oz does develop players that play hard and are willing to run all day but this only takes you so far at elite level).

It would be fantastic for coaches to have documented development plans with regular feedback to players througout a season. As a parent the main thing I'm looking for is that my son improves as a soccer player every season and is willing to take this challenge on. Working side by side with a coach to improve his skills can make this a reality.

Well you haven't been around the right coaches then mate. Further how do you make that judgement you ever coached?? Don't label every coach with what you have seen !!!! Some of us do actually say those things plus talk to parents and players about individual player development but sometimes this can back fire on the poor coach thats trying to do the right things

Yes I have coached juniors but not soccer and not at the equivalent level of the ffsa. Its great to hear there are coaches out there that are keen on development of their whole squad. I understand that some parents think their kids are perfect and therefore don't want to hear criticism of their 'star' player but I'm not one of them. Improving weaknesses is the only way to succeed.

By the way I have been doing some maths...I played with your reserves super striker Rocky 20 + years ago, he is older than me, I retired from playing 10+ years ago, and he is still playing :?: :?:
How does he do it, has he lied on his birth certificate? Do you really know how old he is?, and remember people shrink with age...in 5 years time he will be 3 ft tall
Sorry Big Mac, I just saw your reply!

Johnny Mac is a good coach and good bloke, but the guy has had plenty of clubs.

Rocky is 46 (maybe 47?) and is still going strong. He is still the Reserves top scorer as well! At the beginning of the season, he made it sound like this was his last year, but I don't think he wants to retire yet!!
