Women's soccer team call in security guards

July 10, 2009 10:00pm

A SECURITY guard will patrol a women's soccer match this weekend because of fears the fierce rivalry between the division one teams could turn violent.

The Adelaide University women's football club has hired the guard to crack down on unruly behaviour on and off field, when their team faces Elizabeth Downs tomorrow.

The rivalry between the two clubs has become so fierce that Adelaide University division one players fear for their safety.

Your say: Have you encountered violence at local sport?

Some have elected not to play because of past experiences.

Adelaide University club chairman and division one coach Kevin Holohan said the club had employed a guard for the game and notified the university's security to be on standby during the match.

"Players are being punched and physically and verbally intimidated," Mr Holohan said. "Spectators are just as abusive, making physical taunts towards other spectators and players."

He said that last year during a game he was chased by a relative of one of the Elizabeth Downs players, who threatened to assault him.

Mr Holohan said the club had expressed its concern to the Football Federation of South Australia about the violence that has ensued in games against Elizabeth Downs and Para Hills East in particular.

He said Adelaide University's goalkeeper was "unreasonably attacked" by another player who stepped on her hand and broke it after the goalkeeper caught the ball.

Mr Holohan said several of the team's best players did not want to play tomorrow because of the violence.

"That's the reason why we're taking steps to make the girls feel secure," he said.

The game will be recorded on video by Adelaide University and extra linesmen and marshals will assist.

The FFSA said it had last year resolved an altercation between the clubs but was unaware of continuing issues.

FFSA club and competition manager Wendy Carter said she was "shocked" to hear Adelaide University had gone so far as hiring security. "For any game, we believe there could be any amount of animosity," Ms Carter said.

Elizabeth Downs club chairman Bill Duncan said he did not know of any specific issue with Adelaide University and was surprised to hear the club had called on security.

"It's crazy . . . It's just a game of soccer," Mr Duncan said.

"It is probably overkill. But, if I had an issue with another club, maybe I would do that too. There was an incident last year when someone was reprimanded, but we didn't have any qualms with that.'

He said Elizabeth Downs players behaved well and held "no animosity" towards Adelaide University.

From what I recall the incident resulted in the Ad Uni linesman being suspended for the rest of last season. No Downs player or rep was reported or suspended. Maybe they are looking to generate animosity to increase the crowd size. And I dont know the ramifications of filming a womens soccer match, leave that one to SAWSA. As far as your so called supporter being chased by a players relative, well if you called my sister a fat sl#t I think I would chase you too. Mind you the chase went for 20 metres only as the loudmouth disappeared over the horizon and the chaser with his arm in plaster could'nt be bothered. Ad Uni making themselves out to be angels. More like Drama Queens.

Do you know what proportions of threads get locked in this forum because the abuse goes round and round? Certainly higher than in the men's threads.

Having said that I think the article is a load of waffle.

My cousin played in the team last year. She told me at the time, that the person who started all this was the man named in the article from Adel Uni!

So looks like he trying to protect himself, rather then anyone else!

i dont understand when men try and ruin womens matches. Everytime i go and watch my cousin play, theres always a male coach or spectator starting trouble! Just let the girls play!

Seems as if the federation and Downs think the issue was resolved last year, but Adel Uni seem to be bringing it up again.

bit sad to hear that teams have to resort to security guards for the safety of the players. as someone previously stated just let the girls play. you are always going to get t@#$%rs on the sidelines who have got to much to say. this being my first year in coaching a womens team i can say that i am really enjoying it. the girls have a very high skill level and look like they enjoy playing. its pple who think they're better than everybody else who usually ruin the games, coaches and spectators included.

If I was Downs I would be reporting to the federation that a club has made defamatory comments against there club in public.

After all there is a Football Code of Conduct which states you can't bring the game into disrepute.

What a joke this is. It will tarnish the womens game in this state now, all for nothing.

corner of frome rd and war memorial at 1pm

As for what the linesman alledgedly said as stated above, definitely not! Player abused the linesman, linesman retorted.

As for supposedly hiring a security guardto protect himself, he won't be at the game, sine he is away for the weekend for work,

Cant say too much more on the issue as a pending legal suit against Ad Uni for defamation is in place. Pity for you that our major sponsor is a law firm. Ad Uni hold you head in shame for bringing the game into disrepute. Pity you didnt mention your team played at our ground earlier this year without incident. Ad Uni should be and will be dragged over the coals for this patheic slant on the promising and well run comp by Wendy Carter and her hard working staff at SAWSA.

good on you angela but the Venetto Club were as accomadating to our supporters as they could be and we all enjoyed the relaxed atmophere that he Wanderers and the venetto club put on offer. Great Club . Nice try but quality will always make your comments seem a little bit bias.

wrong
i know the guy, his daughter plays and he's very invested with the down's knows most of the club i'm sure. he'd know if the team was different from last year.
and sure the guy's biased, but i agree with him without the language and harshness
the downs do alright
i know one of hte girls at that club.
i used to live down there
just cause it's elizabeth doesn't mean they're always causing trouble
it's been said that they've already played there earlier without any trouble. so what's with the guard now?
just causng a scene i think

Good game played in good spirits 0-0 with both teams having chances to win. Strange the Uni would have the security guard on standby yet they had no ground marshall. Not a good look with Wendy and Michael Carter in attendance. The chairman that started this nonsense was nowhere to be seen. Good luck to my good mate Drago and the Uni girls for the rest of the season.

The Chairperson was interstate actually. And we had marshall (me) but we couldn't find the vest, so they garbed me in a yellow bib instead.

Good game tho, highlight of the game is perhaps the ref blowing for half time 7 minutes early, and then recalling the players to the field to resume the first half. Both team ahd plenty of chances to win it, uni girls had 3-4 chances where they were clear in the box but scuffedtheir shots straight to the keeper.

Why would you sue the Uni for defamation? One would think you would sue News Limited.
However, is EDSC a not-for-profit organisation?
