Up to five players selected in the latest 23-man Socceroos squad will play their final game for the national team against Paraguay next month, with 20 members of the World Cup squad called up for the game.
Interim national team boss Graham Arnold has said that the retiring players will start against the South American side at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 7 October and will be replaced during the game to give them an opportunity to sign off in style.
The only unavailable World Cup squad members are Mark Viduka - whose wife is expecting their second child - and injured duo Harry Kewell and Josh Kennedy.
There is a recall for veteran Central Coast Mariners defender Tony Vidmar, who cruelly missed out on Germany 2006 after being diagnosed with a heart condition, Sydney FC forward Alex Brosque and Adelaide United midfielder Travis Dodd.
The 23-man Socceroos squad for the Paraguay game is: John Aloisi, Michael Beauchamp, Marco Bresciano,Alex Brosque, Tim Cahill, Scott Chipperfield, Ante Covic, Jason Culina, Travis Dodd, Brett Emerton, Vince Grella, Zeljko Kalac, Stan Lazaridis, Mark Milligan, Craig Moore, Lucas Neill, Tony Popovic, Mark Schwarzer, Josip Skoko, Mile Sterjovski, Archie Thompson,Tony Vidmar, Luke Wilkshire.
With a host of players to call it a day after the Pargaguay game, Arnold has called-up experienced Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat and Newcastle United Jets defender Jade North to join the squad for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bahrain at Aussie Stadium on Wednesday 11 October.
Such a move would suggest that at least two of the retiring players will be defenders.
