How long have SAASL clubs been around for?

Post by Aldo Serena »

Following on from some recent discussions on the forums regarding new clubs, etc, I was wondering how long clubs have been around for? I will kick things off...

MSSC Blue Eagles started in 1979 as MSSC Newton City, and changed our name to MSSC Blue Eagles in 2001 when we moved to Marden.

An 'Old Boys' club actually played in 1978/79 in the lower divisions of the Sunday league (swannsong you got any info re this?) before reforming in 1982 and playing CSL.

There is a Bosna United who used to play at Gilles Plains High School.
They were in Division 7 in 1978 with names such as...Votomir, Penevski, F.Hodzic, K.Muhamed, Slavko, Becirovic, B.Stoepanovic, A.Kulja, Dado and S.Bayeski.
May have formed and played in 1977 but there wasn't a yearbook in 1977.

The club seniors actually started in 1971. The juniors "as a club" started in 1964 when EDJSA moved from being a school based organization to a club based organization. Soccer in the Downs started with the opening of the Elizabeth Downs Primary School in 1963.

The Vale was similar. Soccer started in the Vale with the opening of the primary school in 1961 and became a club in 1964. The Vale emerged as a senior team from the GMH team that played in the inaugural SAASL comp in 1965.

The Grove is similar again. The Grove primary opened in 1960. A club in 1964. Seniors started in 1972.

My bad. Ingle Farm probably started in 1973. 1976 is the year they won the div 4 reserves title.

One bad deserves another.
Whoops a bit of a mistake with the Downs Seniors, was quoting of the top of my head, it was indeed 1971...
And below is the inaugural 1st team that finished 3rd in Division 3.

Image

Elizabeth Downs juniors were competing in 1963 and played at Border Park Broadmeadows so for me, I take that as the commencement of the Club as they were playing within the Far Northern Zone Junior Soccer Council.....it's a matter of what comes first, the chicken or the egg.

Ingle Farm Nomads first competed in 1974 in Division 5a.
Mr J.R. Shapcott was secretary and Mr. A.T. Lenton was chairman.
Home ground - Illberry Oval, Helen Terrace, Valley View.
I think Farm dropped the "Nomads" in 1975 and moved to Rowe Park, Beovich Road, Ingle Farm.

Image

Adelaide Avellino finished mid table in Division 3 in 1978 but did not re-emerge in 1979 (not sure why ?) and a 3rd team was promoted from Division 4.
Some of the players ended up at Metropolitan and Newton a few years later.
Some of the names from 1978.

The Alan Edwards in the Elizabeth Downs team photo I reckon used to be my coach at Modbury Vista. Does anyone know if he coached or not after he finished playing?
