ARSENAL ANNOUNCE FINANCIAL FIGURES

Arsenal remain confident their Highbury Square development can ride out the current uncertain economic climate, with the group's property business recording a pre-tax profit of £4.9million in half-yearly results published on Thursday morning.

Profit before tax for the six months ending November 30, 2008 were £24.5million, up from £20million, with increased contributions from both the football and property aspects of the Gunners' parent holding company.

The Emirates Stadium effect is shown by an increase in match-day turnover of £3.3million to £44.4million, while broadcasting revenues increased to £28.9million, up £4.5million, and overall pre-tax profit increased to £19.7million from £19.1million in 2007.

However, the redevelopment of Highbury could present some challenges.

Construction is close to completion, with 186 apartments, at a value of £76.7million, now finished and sales at £58.1million at November 30, 2008.

However, the current economic downturn means sales income could be slower than expected and Arsenal accept "there is a probable need to extend the term of the Highbury Square bank loan and discussions with the banking syndicate are at a preliminary stage."

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: "Clearly there are some significant challenges ahead of us, both on and off the pitch, over the closing months of this financial year and beyond.

"We are closely monitoring the position with a view to ensuring, as we always have done, that the group is on a robust footing and ready to respond to any challenges this exceptional economic climate may bring.

"The UK property market has been particularly affected by the economic downturn and, inevitably, this has had an impact on the group's own property development activities in the period.

"The financial arrangements for the group's property activities are separate and largely operate independently from the financing of the football business.

"This has always been a key aspect of our financial structure for the group and is intended to provide us with the ability to develop the football team as with, for example, the signing of Andrei Arshavin, irrespective of the difficult conditions in which our property business is having to operate.

"I believe these results are all the better for having been achieved against a background of what is clearly a very difficult economic climate."

Arsenal - who funded the move to Emirates Stadium with a 23-year loan at a fixed interest rate - have always sought to keep their property and football businesses separate.

Speaking earlier this month, chief executive Ivan Gazidis maintained matters on the field should not be adversely affected by the success of the Highbury Square development.

"It does not impact the club because we never based the budgets for the club on anything that happens at Highbury and the two are ring fenced from each other," Gazidis said.

"Obviously it is a situation we have got to monitor very closely, but it is not something that will affect the club negatively.

"It is possible, if it generates profit, that it will affect the club positively, but that is not revenue which we have got in our books that if we don't get we would be in trouble - that would simply be icing on top of the cake."

agree, with the mailbox, hence why i hardly read it, it's always interesting to see what the ingerland people have to say
everyone's opinions are different and i've come to learn that no matter what people say, everything that happens, happens. Like, they may think they are always right, but what people say should never affect your views. eg. me thinking Arsenal will finish top 4. Yes villa are in command and people are saying this and that about the club, but really, Arsenal are a HUGE club and need to be in UCL, plus we have the squad that should be able to over turn villa's deficit

Arsenal fans "at risk" travelling to Stadio Olimpico

Arsenal supporters planning to attending Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Roma have been warned that they are ''at risk'' if they travel alone to the Stadio Olimpico.

The carabinieri wade in at the Stadio Olimpico

The 3,400 travelling Arsenal fans are being provided with a booklet produced by the North London club which advises against using transport routes usually taken by the Italian club's 'Ultra' supporters.

Arsenal fans have also been warned to steer clear of the Campo De Fiori, the traditional meeting place for Roma supporters prior to home matches.

The Italian capital has come under the microscope in the wake of several high-profile incidents in recent years, most notably when a number of Manchester United fans were wounded in clashes with Roma fans in two separate incidents in the city in 2007.

Controversially, despite a chequered recent history of crowd trouble outside the stadium and the heavy-handed tactics of the carabinieri inside the venue itself, Rome has been selected by UEFA as the host for this season's Champions League final.

However European football's governing body has warned city officials that any serious acts of hooliganism between now and showpiece final on May 27 could see the game moved elsewhere.

In the booklet circulated by Arsenal the fans are warned: ''If you travel to the stadium independently, please be aware you are at risk,''

''Do not take trains to the Piazza Flaminio or attempt to use the Ponte Duca D'Aosta bridge as these are habitual routes taken by the Ultras. Please stay away from the Campo De Fiori.''

Wenger: This Is the Final Frontier

Arsene Wenger feels the return of fit-again frontmen Eduardo and Theo Walcott, along with recovering captain Cesc Fabregas, can prove "decisive" as Arsenal head into the critical phase of the season.
Brazil-born Croatian striker Eduardo netted a sublime goal to help fire the Gunners into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after Burnley were beaten 3-0 at Emirates Stadium, where England winger Walcott made a welcome return after four months out with a shoulder problem.

Wenger hopes to also have creative midfielder Fabregas back from a serious knee injury in a couple of weeks, while Czech winger Tomas Rosicky could be another in action again soon following a long lay-off.

"We are going into the final sprint. For us it is important to keep all our targets alive," said Wenger, whose team have closed the gap on Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League down to just three points.

"We know every game demands a big performance because we cannot slip up.

"Slowly, we have all of our players coming back, and that can be decisive."

Arsenal will now play host to Hull on March 17/18 for the right to take on Chelsea at Wembley in the semi-finals.

Wenger feels his team will be in good shape by then. He said: "People judge always the instant situation. If you look now at the players who are still out - Fabregas, Rosicky and [Emmanuel] Adebayor - they can all contribute offensively a lot."

Eduardo, who was handed the captain's armband yesterday, had endured a year on the sidelines following a broken leg and fractured ankle.

But the Croat showed he was back to his clinical best with a superb left-foot volley at the start of the second half.

Wenger feels the 26-year-old, who marked his return to competitive action with a brace in the last round against Cardiff, has returned mentally stronger from his experience.

"It looked like a bit of a 'beach' goal - and he meant it, he sliced the ball," said the Arsenal manager.

"Eduardo is a surprising finisher and an intelligent player.

"His goal was instinct and shows you that finishing is all about what you do in a fraction of a second."

Wenger added: "I did not expect him to come back like that, and it is a tribute to his personality.

"He has never complained and that is a big example in our world."

Another fine finish from Mexican teenager Carlos Vela set Arsenal on their way after 25 minutes, with Emmanuel Eboue's late strike wrapping things up.

The victory - achieved with several of the first-team regulars rested - extended Arsenal's unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions, and proved just the right tonic ahead of Wednesday night's crucial Champions League clash with Roma.

"We did the job in a serious way," said Wenger.

"What is good before going to Roma is we did not concede and scored several goals."

Burnley boss Owen Coyle, meanwhile, could certainly not be accused of instructing his men to sit back.

In the end, though, the Coca-Cola Championship promotion-chasers just did not have enough about them to get a result.

He said: "We felt comfortable before the opening goal, which came from a mistake by one of our own players.

"However, the finishes were first class for their goals.

"I watched Eduardo's again on the TV, and it just seemed to get better and better."

Burnley - who also reached the Carling Cup semi-finals, knocking the Gunners out at Turf Moor along the way - will now concentrate on forcing themselves back into the play-offs.

Coyle said: "If we have got anything about ourselves, we want to be in that Premier League."

Wenger - Eduardo’s form is a surprise

Arsène Wenger admits that he did not expect Eduardo to hit top gear so soon.

The Croatian scored probably his best goal for Arsenal, volleying home after 51 minutes of their 3-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday.

Of course that strike came after Eduardo notched a fine brace in his comeback match against Cardiff last month. Both performances prove that he is nearing his best already, according to Wenger.

“I didn’t expect him to [come back so quickly] because he was out for so long,” said the manager in Sunday’s post-match press conference. “His finishing today was exceptional.”

“You can understand now why he kissed the fitness coach [Tony Colbert] for two reasons. One, to thank him for working hard and two, because he doesn’t see him anymore.

“That goal shows that finishing is instinct. In a fraction of a second you consider the right surface, the flight of the ball and his position.”

Eduardo’s spectacular volley was likened to famous strikes by the likes of Johann Cruyff and Dennis Bergkamp. However, the manager thinks that his 12-month lay-off makes it too early in his Arsenal career for comparisons.

“In fairness, we have not seen enough of him to really judge who he will be,” Wenger said.

“Last year it took him a few months to get in there. Then he scored goals but got quickly injured. He looks more mature than when he arrived in his game.”

Gibbs Comes Of Age & Puts Pressure On Clichy

As Arsenal look forward to an F.A Cup Quarter Final clash with Hull City, Arsène Wenger will no doubt be delighted that his options have been boosted with the likes of Theo Walcott and Eduardo returning to action.

But while those more established names get back into the groove, the boss will be equally pleased with the progress of Kieran Gibbs, who put in an almost faultless performance left back.

His form has been pretty good since Wenger converted him to full back last season, but the odd mistake has limited the Lambeth born starlet from kicking on. Yet, although Burnley are not the biggest of names, Kieran looked assured and confident and dealt with the danger very well when called upon.

Gibbs is no longer a surprise name on the team sheet, and with Gael Clichy struggling to replicate the form shown last term, Wenger could turn to the England Under 21 international if he decided that Gael needed a break.

He demonstrated that he is learning a great deal this afternoon. As Wade Elliott attempted to attack him in the second period, Kieran stood his ground, and the frustrated Elliott lashed his cross over the bar. The attacking side to his game was also present, as the 19-year-old cropped up in the box late on, and frequently tried to play forward passes, with mixed results.

The F.A Cup and closing moments of Premiership games show that Wenger is nto afraid to throw the prospect in at the deep end, so why not give him a start?

10 bucks says some pissy little English kids that can't handle alcohol will "wander into" Campo De Fiori or Piazza Flaminio and find themselves in a patch of trouble when the police come in with their batons.

In all seriousness, the crucial piece of advice not given there is to not wear Assssnal colours in the large space around the Olimpico or Stadio dei Marmi, especially the Curva Nord and Distinti Ovest as that is where troublemaking Riomma scum will be lurking for some easy stabbings.
