Is it ever too late to make a comeback...

Post by povman_2009 »

I am about to make a comeback after many years of coaching I am putting on a pair of boots and having a run in the Amatuers on Sunday Arvo , at 44 , severly overweight and of dubious fitness am I just setting myself up for disaster... The team is in Div 6, can anyone give me a clue as to the seriousness or otherwise of this level , is it mainly old fellas like me or is it full of fit youngsters who are just out for a bit of fun?
This is a serious quesiton I am not trying to make fun of any club or competition I am just looking for a heads up... so I know what to expect.

Good luck Povman, I share the pain you are about to endure.
I attempted several comebacks during my forties and while they were a heap of fun, it hurt.
I was playing in the lower divisions and from my experience, the teams were a real mixture.
Some very good players who were past their prime but smart enough to position themselves well and lay off a good pass, donkeys who looked like they had never played in their life, younger, fit (ish) guys who could have been playing a better level but weren't dedicated enough (they really are a pain in the arse and are likely to cause you real grief), and older average players like myself who should have known better.
On the whole the attitude and spirit of everyone was good, but you would occasionally come across an individual or team that thought they were still playing for sheep stations.
The biggest problem you will face is that your mind will still think you can reach a certain ball, but your body just won't be able to make it. You'll still think you're faster, fitter, more talented that you actually are (and in my case, probably ever was).
Having said all that, you'll love it and probably appreciate it even more than you did when you were younger. It's just great to be part of a bunch of blokes and all the jokes and fun that comes with it.
The last season I played regularly, there was an old guy playing for Gawler who was in his early sixties. He didn't do a lot, just jogged up and don the wing and layed off the occasional ball, but you could see he still loved every second of it.
Good luck (and warm those hammies up well).

Thx for the heads up 50Cent... I fit into one of those categories you mentioned but will not confess as to which one just yet.

1 - Private cover health insurance
2 - Neurophine - at least a dozen packets
3 - 20 rolls of tape
4 - ice and a decent size bucket that fits your whole foot
5 - Voltarin gel - good stuff
6 - Voltarin tablets = good stuff
7 - Mondays off work - at least 18 of them
8 - A non nagging wife
9 - A wife that doesn't want sex on sunday nights
10 - A team that wears a black strip - black makes you look thinner :D Go Vikings

We had a team in Div 6 last year and I came off the bench in one game. The standard is fairly poor with only 2-3 teams been reasonable. Mainly made up of older guys or kids who don't really know how to play.

Why not join up at an Over 35's team instead?

Comeback is timed to prepare me for a season of amatuers with my son who is playing U17 this year... I thought this sounded like an easy way to ease back into the game. O35's sounds too competitive. Plus who knows with my small amount of talent I might be a star

Well the comeback has started,

My team is not training yet so I joined my Sons U17 E&D team for a session, got through mostly unscathed, a slight roll of an ankle when I stepped on a rock whilst retrieving a ball... other than that pretty happy so far...
