Villarreal CF will be defending an impressive home record in the UEFA Champions League when they take on Panathinaikos FC in the first knockout round first leg. The last time they were at this stage the Spanish club continued their journey, their competition debut, all the way to the semi-finals but they need to be wary of their opponents' new-found away form in the competition.

• In Group E Villarreal won two home games and drew the other as they finished in second place on nine points, one behind Manchester United FC. They maintained a proud record of never having lost a UEFA Champions League fixture at El Madrigal. Including the 2005/06 third qualifying round they have collected five wins and five draws at their home ground in Europe's elite competition. Villarreal lost just one game in the group this time round, going down 2-0 away to Celtic FC on Matchday 6 with qualification already assured.

• Their previous appearance in the first knockout round, in 2005/06, brought a tie with Rangers FC. Villarreal drew 2-2 away with a 1-1 second-leg scoreline at El Madrigal proving enough to take Manuel Pellegrini's side through on away goals.

• Villarreal and Panathinaikos have never previously met in UEFA club competition and the Spanish team have only faced Greek opponents twice before, winning both games. At home in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage they beat Egaleo FC 4-0 with Javi Venta and Santi Cazorla both on the scoresheet. They reached the quarter-finals that season before losing 3-2 on aggregate to AZ Alkmaar, going down 2-1 in the home leg.

• In the 2007/08 UEFA Cup Villarreal travelled to AEK Athens FC in the group stage and won 2-1. Their interest in the competition ended in the Round of 32 when they lost on away goals to eventual winners FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

• Panathinaikos ended Group B in fine style, taking maximum points from their last three fixtures to clinch a place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage for the first time in seven years. Their first three games in their eighth UEFA Champions League campaign had yielded just a single point.

• The finish included impressive away wins, 3-0 against Werder Bremen and 1-0 against FC Internazionale Milano, which ended a long run without success on opponents' grounds. Their two previous UEFA Champions League campaigns had not brought a single away win and their last victory on their travels in the competition proper had come in December 2003 with a 3-1 triumph at Rangers FC, a sequence of seven winless games which contained five defeats and two draws.

• Panathinaikos' other away game in the group ended in a 3-1 defeat at Anorthosis Famagusta FC. Revenge came with a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at the OACA Spiro Louis Stadium on Matchday 6 which sealed Henk ten Cate's side's qualification as group winners on ten points, two ahead of Inter. Their other home games brought a 2-0 defeat against the Italian champions and a 2-2 draw with Bremen.

• Panathinaikos have lost on each of their nine visits to Spain in UEFA club competition, all of them since 1999. The Greens scored five goals in that period while conceding 23, with all but two of the matches taking place in the UEFA Champions League. In a total of 17 games against Spanish opponents, home and away, the Athens club have won three, drawn five and lost nine.

• Heavy defeats came at the home of FC Barcelona (5-0) in the 2005/06 group stage and Real Madrid CF (3-0) in the 2001/02 second group stage. Their last trip to Spain, in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage, ended in a 2-1 loss at Club Atlético de Madrid.

• The Greek team's last involvement in a knockout tie in Europe's premier club competition resulted in defeat at the hands of a Spanish side with Barcelona's 3-1 victory at the Camp Nou in the 2001/02 quarter-finals taking them through after the game in Greece had ended in a 1-0 win for Panathinaikos.

• Their only previous knockout round games in the competition had come in 1995/96 when they beat Legia Warszawa 3-0 at home in the quarter-final decider after a goalless first leg. Panathinaikos succumbed to AFC Ajax in the last four despite winning 1-0 in Amsterdam in the first game, losing 3-0 at home – still the only time in UEFA Champions League history a team has won away in the first leg and lost the tie.

• Pascal Cygan has unhappy memories of Panathinaikos while playing for Arsenal FC, the defender putting through his own net at Highbury to give the visitors a 1-1 draw in the 2004/05 group stage. Robert Pirès also played for the English club in that game and in the reverse fixture in Athens two weeks previously, which finished 2-2.

• Edmílson was in the Barcelona team that defeated Panathinaikos 5-0 at the Camp Nou in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Panathinaikos players Nikos Spiropoulos, Giorgos Karagounis and Dimitris Salpingidis started for Greece in their 2-1 defeat by Spain in Salzburg in UEFA EURO 2008™ Group D. Alexandros Tzorvas and Giannis Goumas were on the bench. For Spain, Santi Cazorla came on in the 58th minute while Joan Capdevila and Marcos Senna were unused substitutes.
Panathinaikos FC will be aiming to win their first UEFA Champions League knockout contest since 1996 when they welcome Villarreal CF to the OACA Spiro Louis Stadium.

• The Athens club ended Group B in fine style, taking maximum points from their last three fixtures to clinch a place in the competition's knockout stage for the first time in seven years. In contrast, their first three games in their eighth UEFA Champions League campaign had yielded a single point.

• At home, Henk ten Cate's side finished with a 1-0 win against Anorthosis Famagusta FC to seal their qualification as group winners on ten points, two ahead of FC Internazionale Milano. Their previous home games in the section had brought a defeat, 2-0 against the Italian champions, and a draw, 2-2 with Werder Bremen.

• The Greek team's last involvement in a knockout tie in Europe's premier club competition resulted in defeat at the hands of a Spanish side with Barcelona's 3-1 victory at Camp Nou in the 2001/02 quarter-finals taking them through after the game in Greece had ended in a 1-0 win for Panathinaikos.

• Their only previous knockout round games in the competition had come in 1995/96 when they beat Legia Warszawa 3-0 at home in the quarter-final second leg after a goalless opener. Panathinaikos then lost to AFC Ajax in the semi-final despite winning 1-0 in Amsterdam in the first game, losing 3-0 at home – still the only time in UEFA Champions League history a team has won away in the first leg and lost the tie.

• Panathinaikos have a good record at home to Spanish visitors in official games and have yet to be beaten in eight meetings, winning three and drawing five. In their three knockout ties, however, the Athens side have come off second best every time.

• The last time Villarreal were at this stage they continued their journey, their competition debut, all the way to the semi-finals. In the 2005/06 season they removed Rangers FC from the first knockout round, winning on away goals after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw in Glasgow and 1-1 in Spain. They then won their quarter-final against Inter via the same method after losing 2-1 in Milan and winning 1-0 at home. Their run ended in the semi-finals, with a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal FC followed by a goalless home draw.

• The two sides had never met in UEFA club competition before the first leg.

• In the 2007/08 UEFA Cup Villarreal travelled to AEK Athens FC in the group stage and won 2-1. Their interest in the competition ended in the Round of 32 when they lost on away goals to eventual winners FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

• Villarreal's only other meeting with Greek opponents in an official fixture came in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage when they beat Egaleo FC 4-0 at home with Javi Venta and Santi Cazorla both on the scoresheet. They reached the quarter-finals that season before losing 3-2 on aggregate to AZ Alkmaar, losing 2-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away.

• Villarreal's only defeat in Group E came away from home and with qualification already assured, going down 2-0 against Celtic FC on Matchday 6. They finished in second place on nine points, one behind Manchester United FC, drawing their other away games, 0-0 at Old Trafford and 2-2 in Denmark against Aalborg BK.

• Panathinaikos players Nikos Spiropoulos, Giorgos Karagounis and Dimitris Salpingidis started for Greece in their 2-1 defeat against Spain in Salzburg in UEFA EURO 2008™ Group D on 18 June 2008. Alexandros Tzorvas and Giannis Goumas were on the bench. For Spain, Santi Cazorla came on in the 58th minute while Joan Capdevila and Marcos Senna were unused substitutes.

• Pascal Cygan has unhappy memories of Panathinaikos having put through his own net while at Arsenal to give the visitors a 1-1 draw at Highbury in the 2004/05 group stage. Robert Pirès also played for the English club in that game and in the reverse fixture in Athens two weeks previously, which finished 2-2.

• Edmílson was in the Barcelona team that defeated Panathinaikos 5-0 at Camp Nou in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Panathinaikos have never been involved in a penalty shoot-out in UEFA club competition.

• Villarreal have won both their previous shoot-outs in European competition:
4-3 v Torino FC, 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup third round
3-1 v Club Atlético de Madrid, 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup final

Villarreal lose Rodríguez for Panathinaikos tie
Villarreal CF central defender Gonzalo Rodríguez will miss the first leg of the Spanish side's UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie at home to Panathinaikos FC on 25 February because of a torn right thigh muscle.

Fitness race
Despite finishing his team's Liga victory against CD Numancia on Sunday the Argentinian international later complained of pain in his right leg and subsequent tests revealed he will be sidelined for between four and five weeks. The 24-year-old – who has made 17 league starts and six UEFA Champions League appearances for the Yellow Submarine this season – faces a race to be fit for the return leg on 10 March.

It would be a great acheivement if we progress further i the UCL against Villareal, but I think that they have a very strong team. That combined with the fact that we did very poorly in the Winter transfer period not signing an effective attacking midfielder/winger and a Forward will ultimately cost us.

I do beleive that if we filled our holes in the Winter transfer period things would of have been tighter and maybe 50-50 but now it is heavily tilted in Villareal's favour

fingers crossed though

Panathinaikos hero Vyntra looking forward
It's a classic zero-to-hero story for Pana's centre-back...

Derby-day hero Loukas Vyntra is understandably happy with the rhythmic chanting of his name by Panathinaikos fans after his unprecedented double inspired his side to a 3-0 win over PAOK at the weekend.

Speaking to Greek newspaper Sportday, the centre-back spoke about his delight at having helped his team to a crucial victory that keeps alive their title challenge.

The win on Sunday moved Henk Ten Cate's team into second place and it was Vyntra's first league goals of the season that grabbed headlines.

"I am extremely happy to have scored my first two league goals," Vyntra said. "And my pleasure was greater because I scored two goals in a derby that helped my team to win.

"But it doesn't change anything for me."

However, despite having had his name chanted by fans because of his heroics at the weekend, there was a time when Vyntra was made something of a scapegoat by Panathinaikos supporters for the failures of past sides.

Under his new Dutch manager though, the 28-year-old has improved enough at centre-back this season enough to warrant a place in Otto Rehhagel's Greece set-up.

But the former Paniliakos man insists that he has moved on from any previous tension with fans.

"I don't want to talk about it," Vyntra said. "Those things have passed.

"I am looking forward."

It is perhaps a wise plan considering Spanish Primera Divison outfit Villarreal await Pana in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League on February 25, followed by a crucial derby clash with Olympiakos a few days later.

It will be a season-defining week for the Athenian club, though Vyntra insists the focus will be more immediate.

He said, "I don't like setting targets; I don't look that far ahead.

"I look at each game separately, all of the matches are hard now and I am looking to the next one against Iraklis."
