W-League Awards
The inaugural season of the Westfield W-League unveiled an exciting new era in women’s sport with stars of the games recognised for their outstanding contribution at the Westfield W-League Awards in Sydney, today.
Five players, two teams, one referee and coach were amongst those honoured.
“The Westfield W-League has proven to be a welcome initiative for talented young sports women to gain high quality competitive opportunities on a regular basis," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.
"There are almost 75,000 young girls who play football which is fantastic. For those who are keen to play sport to the highest level possible, the Westfield W-League now gives them something to aspire to along with other national sporting leagues for women such as netball and basketball.
"Importantly, for us, the Westfield W-League also gives talented women players the opportunity to shine on a national stage and stake their claim for selection to one of the three national teams for women," Buckley said.
Queensland Roar and Melbourne Victory players took home the top honours.
Player of the Year was awarded to Queensland Roar’s Lana Harch and Melbourne Victory’s Melissa Barbieri was named Goalkeeper of the Year.Sydney FC striker, Leena Khamis, took home the Golden Boot for her seven sensational goals in the regular season. And Marianna Tabain from Perth Glory received the Goal of the Year award for her dazzling display in Round 9.
“We are very pleased with the first season of the Westfield W-League. It gives us a strong foundation to build for the future,” said Buckley.

Re: W-League Awards
Queensland Roar’s highly successful Westfield W-League season has been recognised with the club claiming three major categories at the inaugural awards ceremony in Sydney today.
At the ceremony striker Lana Harch was recognised as the Westfield W-League’s best player for the 2008/09 season.
Harch contributed six goals to the premiership push for the Roar Women and also slotted the opening goal of the 2-0 grand final victory over Canberra United.
The striker was a constant threat to opposition defences throughout the season and was a key part of the Roar’s success.
The award is an outstanding addition to the Player of the Grand Final award Harch received after last Saturday’s victory.
Former Wales international Jeff Hopkins was recognised as the Westfield W-League’s best coach after guiding Queensland Roar to top spot in the regular season, followed by a grand final win.
Hopkins oversaw a team which lost only once during the regular season before successfully negotiating the finals to championship glory at Ballymore Stadium last Saturday.
Hopkins’ achievement cannot be underestimated, given that he was forced to cope with three key players succumbing to season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injuries during the course of the campaign.
To top off the event, Queensland Roar were recognised for their outstanding onfield discipline with the Fair Play Award.

Scalzi receives W-League accoladeWednesday, 21 January 2009

© AUFC Adelaide United W-League striker Sandra Scalzi has won the Hat Trick Award at the inaugural Westfield W-League Awards.
The 22 year old took out the award after scoring the first ever hat trick in the new national women’s competition, her three goals single-handedly giving United a 3-2 win over the Newcastle Jets at Hindmarsh Stadium back in Round 2.
It may not have been the ideal first season for Adelaide United’s Women’s Team in the Westfield W-League as the Ladies in Red finished on the bottom of the table, however Scalzi’s achievement provides Adelaide with something to salvage from the season.
Scalzi’s hat trick also helped her finish as The Reds’ leading goal scorer for the season, her four goals leaving her one in front of both Victoria Balomenos and Sharon Black.
The Westfield W-League Awards were held in Sydney earlier today to recognise a number of individuals for their outstanding contribution during the season.
“The Westfield W-League has proven to be a welcome initiative for talented young sports women to gain high quality competitive opportunities on a regular basis," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.
