Three cheers for Eduardo as he returns in hat-trick style for Arsenal
He's back. A hat-trick for the reserves against the first team is his message. Arsenal have a new striker in the transfer window.
Eduardo is his name, looking a picture of health compared to the last time he was seen in the Barclays Premier League.
We can all remember the ugly scenes on February 23 last year. Eduardo was lying motionless, his body still in shock following the challenge by Birmingham defender Martin Taylor that left the striker with a broken left fibula and dislocated left ankle.
Some of his team-mates could not look, Cesc Fabregas covering his face with his hands as former Arsenal physio Gary Lewin sprinted on to the pitch at St Andrew's.
Eduardo said: 'At first I couldn't believe that this was happening to me. Then I thought, "No, this is how it is", so I resolved to try to do everything I could to come back as quickly as possible.'
Sky Sports, who were screening the game live, decided not to show the collision again, fearing a backlash if they continued to analyse the fracture from different camera angles.
Then there were the conflicting stories about whether Taylor, who was sent off and later made a public apology, visited Eduardo in the Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where he was initially treated.
Eduardo said: 'My wife said he was there, but he came along at the time when I was having surgery. She obviously didn't know him, until one of the doctors pointed him out and said, "That's the guy".
'I wasn't conscious so I don't remember seeing or speaking to him. He has been in touch via email, though. Before my comeback for the reserves last month he sent me a message to wish me luck and to say he was glad I was back in action.
'I had faxes and emails from people who had the same sort of injury, telling me to be calm and not worry because it would get back to normal. Robbie Savage, Alan Smith and David Busst were three of those who were in touch with positive thoughts.
'When I was in hospital I realised I had to take this process step by step, so I started setting gradual goals. First of all it was to see how things were going day by day, so every day was a victory in that way.
'Then, as the injury was getting better, I started pushing every week to see how I was improving, and then it got to the point where it had been so long that I was taking things monthly until I actually got back to training.'
Nearly a year after his left leg buckled under the force of that thunderous challenge, the Arsenal striker is preparing to make his first-team comeback.
'That will be his reward for two operations and eight hours a day he spent in rehabilitation. He has never seen the incident, preferring to concentrate on his fight for fitness and target a return to the Arsenal team.
'I didn't look at anything about the injury, the game, what happened, and I've not even watched the incident since,' he added in an interview that appears in the Official Arsenal Magazine.
'There were ups and downs with this story and its focus, really. My X-rays and all the injury footage were asked for by doctors all around the world for use at universities and in various studies, to show students how the medicine and repair process worked.
If it had happened in Africa, I would have lost my foot. In other countries I probably wouldn't be playing football again. As it happened, it was in Europe, which has more developed facilities.
'I was also thinking about how strong it was for kids to watch, that was a major concern for me, in terms of how it might affect them and their views about playing football.'
He spent four months convalescing in Brazil, spending time with his family as he fixed his sights on a successful return to Arsene Wenger's team.
It took nine months for the striker, signed from Dinamo Zagreb at the start of last season, to emerge from the shadows, training with his team-mates again at London Colney and sharpening his striking instincts.
When he scored his hat-trick, it was a small signal to his manager and his team-mates. Surely they had taken it easy on him?
'I didn't think they changed anything really, but, of course, we are all members of the same group and nobody's going to tackle you in training as they would an opponent in a match anyway,' he said.
'There's a lot of respect and care shown to each other. So I couldn't feel them being soft on me because I'd had the injury, just being soft generally because we're all careful in training not to injure our friends and colleagues. Plus, I had prepared during my recovery so that I didn't feel any worries. If I stepped out there it was because I was ready, so there was no reason for anything to be different.'
He then made a successful return for the reserves last month against Portsmouth, reminding the manager he can solve the club's shortage of goals when he is fully fit. That will not be far away after he recovered from a hamstring strain but Wenger will not rush him back.
'The way I see it, if I could play now I would do, but obviously I don't feel that I can go to the Emirates and be at my very best just yet. 'Until then I want to play in every single game that I can for the reserves. I want to be there to make sure that I'm moving further and further forward, until the boss thinks I am ready.' When he is, he will be guaranteed a hero's reception.

On the performance…
"It was a good battle. I believe that in the first half we were really on top of the game, with a lot of fluency. At 1-0 we wanted to keep them under pressure but they made a real battle of it with a lot of long balls and a high line. They scored from a deflected cross and after that we had the mental resources to come back and win in a convincing way because we kept going, and kept going."

On keeping pace with the league leaders…

Arsenal Prepare Offer For Matthew Upson - Report
Arsene Wenger is ready to offer cash plus Nicklas Bendtner for one of his former charges...
According to a report in the British tabloid The Daily Mirror, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has identified Matthew Upson as the man to sort out his defensive woes.
West Ham United are hopeful that they can pass through the January transfer window without having to sell any of their star names, but a bid of £9 million plus Nicklas Bendtner may well tempt the Irons.
It is claimed that the Gunners could struggle to meet the Hammers' £12 m valuation of the English international centre-back and will therefore offer Bendtner, the 21-year-old Danish striker, plus cash.
Upson signed for Arsenal as an 18-year-old from Luton Town in 1997 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular.
It was Wenger who sanctioned the sale of the 6ft 1in defender to Birmingham City for £3 million in 2003, but he could be keen to return to the Gunners in order to play Champions League football.

Andrei Arshavin
RUSSIAN billionaire Alisher Usmanov holds the key to Arsenal’s £12million move for Andrei Arshavin.
The Gunners’ majority shareholder is helping to broker a deal with his close ties to Zenit St Petersburg’s owners.
Russian side Zenit are owned by oil giants Gazprom and Usmanov is the chairman of Gazprominvestholding, who manage their international investments.
Usmanov is not on the board at the Emirates having been frozen out — so has no official capacity in any deal.
Forward Arshavin, 27, was the star in Russia’s march to the semi-final of Euro 2008.
Zenit turned down Arsenal’s initial £10m bid last week but are still keen to reach a deal.
Club spokesman Alexei Petrov said: “Zenit have invited Arsenal officials to come to St Petersburg next Tuesday.
“Zenit does want to find an acceptable option for everyone.”

Zenit rejects Arsenal's 'final' offer for Arshavin
Zenit St. Petersburg has rejected Arsenal's latest offer for Andrei Arshavin -- said to be the club's final offer -- but reports from Russia indicate that negotiations are still ongoing.
Arsenal's public pursuit of the Euro 2008 and last year's UEFA Cup star has been well documented.
After having initial bids of $13.7 million to $16.4 million rejected, Arsenal stated that an improved offer of $16.4 million plus an additional $4.1 million in add-ons was to be its last bid, as Gunners chairman Peter Hill Wood declared: "This is our final offer. We do not intend to continue to raise the sum. If we do not purchase Arshavin, then so be it."
According to Zenit Radio, however, this latest offer has also been rebuffed, yet Russian media outlet Interfax is stating that negotiations are still ongoing.
The north London club is reportedly leading the chase for the player's signature, as director Ken Fryer has remained in St. Petersburg to discuss terms with Zenit general manager Maxim Mitrofanov.
Arsenal's valuation still falls some way short of the $27.4 million for which Zenit is holding out

Wenger: Arshavin is only target
http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Foo ... nid-36723/
Arsene Wenger has hinted that Arsenal will not make any signings should the club fail to bring in Andrei Arshavin.
Arsenal are in negotiations with Zenit St Petersburg and there have been mixed reports over how the deal is progressing.
It has been suggested that the clubs are some distance apart in their valuations of the player, but Zenit general director Maxim Mitrofanov said on Thursday that he expected the deal to go through.
"I hope [he will join Arsenal],” he said in The Guardian.
“We hope it will be finished within two days. We would like that it will happen. Wenger likes the player, Arsenal want him, and Arshavin wants to play.
"In this winter transfer window, I can honestly say I do not have any other offers for him – not buying or loaning.
"[There is] already some agreement between Arsenal and the player about the terms of his contract."
But Wenger, who reiterated his desire to keep discussions of the deal ‘as quiet as possible’, says he is prepared to keep faith with his current squad if the Arshavin bid fails.
"You have to accept that, in the transfer market, sometimes you go for a player and that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't happen,” he told Arsenal TV Online.
"But I am very happy with the squad I have and will only add someone who can give us something special.
"For the rest, I have good players and believe strongly in them.
"Should we not get what we want, we will accept it as well because I believe we are strong enough with what we have."
He added: “At the moment, I am more focused on doing well with the players we have than being frenetic about the transfer market.
"We are at an important part of the season where the most important thing is to focus on how strong we are and what we are going to achieve together.
"I am convinced there is enough quality inside here to achieve that target."
Arsenal were boosted this week when Eduardo completed a full reserve game and, with Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky all hoping to return in the next few weeks, Wenger feels there is plenty of talent in reserve at Emirates Stadium.
"We are not close to signing anybody else, but what I see in training is a very determined team of top quality,” he said.
"Also, the players coming back, like Fabregas and Walcott, there is a little chance that Rosicky will play again before the end of the season, so we have plenty of players coming back who are like new signings."
fuck i've had enough of this saga, i bet ya we will end up with nooneZenit losing patience with Arsenal as Arshavin considers strike action

If Andrei Arshavin's protracted transfer to Arsenal does not happen the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker might refuse to play again for the Uefa Cup holders, Maxim Mitrofanov, the chief executive who is negotiating for the Russian club, has admitted to The Guardian.
Arsenal received a faxon Friday night last night from Mitrofanov containing the "final offer of my board with a massive discount from the 25 million euros we wanted last summer," for the 27-year-old, he said. It is not clear how much Zenit have lowered the price to but the £12m plus bonuses so far offered by Arsenal will not be accepted and Mitrofanov confirmed he is feeling frustrated with the stance at the Emirates.
"I told Arsenal already that we don't accept the £12m and they know it very well," he added. Asked if, for example, Zenit's price was £18m and Arsenal wanted to pay £14m, could there still be a further compromise, Mitrofanov said: "If we were very close to each other, if it was a similar price, then we would need a meeting to talk about it."
All negotiations have been conducted electronically and Mitrofanov has not spoken to Arsène Wenger. "No, I talk with Ken Friar, who is the managing director, and John Smith, who is the agent for Arsenal," he said, before confirming: "I know that they [Arsenal] have discussed everything with Arshavin" regarding his personal terms, which suggests that, if the clubs can agree, the deal will be done quickly.
The protracted move has to be finalised by Monday, which is Arsenal's self-imposed deadline. Asked what he thought would happen Mitrofanov did not sound too hopeful, saying "I don't know," which could hint that Zenit's final offer is still far above Arsenal's £12m valuation.
If Arshavin is not sold to the north London club in this month's transfer window which closes on 2 February, does Mitrofanov think he will refuse to play again for Zenit? "I'm not sure. But none of the big clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United would look at a player doing this."
Wenger struck a resigned attitude when asked about the saga yesterday. The Arsenal manager said: "When you want to buy a player, you go as far as you can and, if you cannot take one step more, you cannot. You have to accept that everybody has a price and when the buyer has a certain amount of money and not more. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work."

Re: Arsenal FC 2008/2009
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has turned down the chance to join German side Hoffenheim according to his agent and father Thomas Bendtner.
Hoffenheim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted that he had held talks with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger but refused to name the players concerned.
However Thomas Bendtner has confirmed the surprise Bundesliga leaders' interest in his son.
Despite the 21-year-old reportedly growing frustrated at his lack of starts at the Emirates, Bendtner senior added that his son would be staying with the Gunners.
"Hoffenheim have shown an interest. I know that," Thomas Bendtner told the German media.
Interest
"There are several clubs that call during the period when the transfer window is open.
"It's always like that and we are glad that there is interest for Nicklas, but a transfer is not going to happen at this stage. Nicklas will stay at Arsenal."
Rangnick's need for a new striker is urgent after the recent news that two of his star forwards are set to spend long periods on the sidelines.
Striker Vedad Ibisevic has been a sensation in the first half of the campaign, scoring 18 goals in 17 league games, but has now been ruled out for the season with cruciate ligament damage.
Fellow forward Chinedu Obasi will also be missing when the league resumes from its winter break with the Nigerian international struggling with a persistent thigh injury

Wenger - Team-mates don't need to be friends
By Richard Clarke
Friendship is not the most important commodity among team-mates, according to Arsène Wenger.
It was reported recently that Arsenal centre backs William Gallas and Kolo Toure had fallen out. Certainly the statistics suggest the manager has been reluctant to pair them together in the past few months.
However, Wenger claims the duo have a perfectly friendly relationship and argues that the either/or decision he has been making between the two was down to their collective lack of height. He went on to add that some of the world’s greatest footballing partnerships did not see eye-to-eye.
“They get on OK,” said Wenger. “In football you don’t have to go on holiday together but you can still play together.
“[Real Madrid legends] Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas never spoke to each other. They didn’t greet each other but when you saw them play together you would never guess that.
“Kolo and William talk to each other but it is always very difficult to assess how much people are friends or not. What is essential is that, on the pitch, football is most important and they should respect the game. If you want to win, you do what it takes.”
The issue has arisen because Gallas has recovered from the hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since the win over Plymouth in the FA Cup Third Round. The Frenchman is likely to join Toure and Johan Djourou in the squad for the Fourth-Round tie at Cardiff on Sunday. It means three players are competing for two positions.
“I'll consider [playing Gallas and Toure] but I have not decided yet,” said Wenger when asked about the equation. “I might rest one of the two as well, I don’t know.
“I believe they can play together but we have a little handicap in the air when they do.”

wont happen city wont let go of him no way. but would be a dream signing for all goonersARSENE WENGER will make a £7million raid for England defender Micah Richards.
And sources close to the Arsenal boss claim he is supremely confident of landing the unsettled Manchester City star.
Wenger has been a huge admirer of Richards since the 20-year-old burst on to the Premier League scene three years ago. And he had been sizing up a swoop before Richards signed a new five-year deal 12 months ago.
The idea of Richards going for as little as £7m would have been unthinkable then but a poor run of form has left City looking for experienced top-class defenders in the transfer window.
Wenger believes he can resurrect Richards’ career — and his 2010 World Cup hopes with England — at a price that does not break the bank.

Re: Arsenal FC 2008/2009
Skysports : Zenit St Petersburg have issued an ultimatum to Arsenal to conclude a deal for playmaker Andrei Arshavin on Saturday, or risk missing out on him entirely.
Reports suggest talks between the clubs have broken down over the transfer fee to be paid to the Russian club.
The Gunners have reportedly offered a package totalling £15million, of which £12million would be paid up front, with a further £3million to be added in bonuses, appearance fees and other conditions.
But the St Petersburg club are still angling for an increase in the transfer fee, and are now pushing to conclude the deal on Saturday.
"If Arsenal don't accept our terms, then Arshavin will not be sold to them," Zenit general director Maksim Mitrofanov told Sport Express.
"In any case this will be resolved by Saturday evening."
Other interest
Mitrofanov also revealed interest in Arshavin from other Premier League clubs.
"Arshavin may still end up in England," he said.
"Several other clubs are interested in him, who haven't yet issued an official approach, but who are ready to do so."
Arshavin added: "I can only wait and see how the situation resolves itself. I know about Arsenal's offer and the £12+3million plan, and I consider that according to the current state of the market to be more than adequate.
"But clearly I am not the one who will make the decision."

On the performance…
"I feel in the first half we started very well, but overall Cardiff had a good committed game and created some chances. In the second half we were on top and it was the quality of their defending and their commitment that stopped us scoring. The pitch, too, was not easy, but it was a great cup game and showed what this cup is about."
On the inconvenience of a replay…
"We could do without a reply yes, 100 per cent. But let us not complain because we are football players and if a replay is the price we pay to still be in the hat, then so be it.
"They wanted the replay in the end. I don't know why, maybe it is a chance at another big game for them, but I believe as a Premier League team coming to a Championship team at a ground like this, there can always be a draw - it has happened before. We are confident we can do it at home."
On wanting to rest players…
"We are very short at the moment and cannot rotate too much, so with two games coming up I could have rested more players than I did. I planned to take [Robin] Van Persie off if possible but it didn't work out that way. It shows in football that you can try to plan but it never goes how you think it will ."
On getting nervous late on …
"At 0-0 anything could happen, but in the second half I wasn't so much worried as I had been in the first half. They created chances then on crosses but after they didn't create."
On Aaron Ramsey's performance…
"It is always tricky to come back to your home town club for the first time because you can sometimes overplay. I think he showed that he can be a great player, but sometimes it got to him as it was an emotional day for him."
On Cardiff's contribution…
"Their centre-backs had a great game today and overall I think the whole team had a great day."

Adebayore was crap again, missed some prime opportunities. Bentner had a chance to shine, but didn't. Another disappointing effort by the Gunners.

Gunner join Arsenal: Zenit agree £15m fee for Arshavin

By Ashley Gray
Arsenal last night agreed a fee - believed to be £15million - to sign Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg.
The 27-year-old is expected to travel to London this week to finalise terms, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confident of landing the Russia star after tortuous negotiations.
The Frenchman entertained Arshavin at Arsenal's training ground before Christmas and the forward is already thought to have virtually agreed personal terms, despite claims from Zenit last night that his wage demands were still a stumbling block.
The Russian club's board held a lengthy meeting that went on until late into the evening before emerging to announce that they had reached an agreement with the north London club.
Zenit said in a statement: 'Negotiations between Zenit and Arsenal on the transfer of Andrei Arshavin are continuing.
'The clubs have reached an agreement in principle on terms that both sides feel reflect the market value of the player.
'At the moment, the main obstacle in the implementation of the deal are the personal requirements of Andrei Arshavin.
'Andrei Arshavin does not intend to reduce the demands of his personal contract, thus hindering the negotiation process and calling into question all the agreements reached between the clubs.'
From Russia with love: Arshavin won the UEFA Cup last year with Zenit, and will hope to add to his trophy cabinet at the Emirates

There were claims that Arshavin was seeking close to £110,000 a week - about double his current wages - but his agent Dennis Lachter refused to comment.
It is unlikely that Arsenal and the player would be so far apart as Lachter has been sanctioned by the Zenit to talk directly to clubs since the Russian season finished in November.
The Euro 2008 star is desperate to test himself at a higher level and is aware that no other club have made an acceptable offer for his services this month.
Earlier this month he told Sportsmail he hoped the clubs would reach an agreement and, while waiting for a decision this week, he indicated that Zenit's valuation was the only barrier to a move.
'I'm waiting for a final decision,' he said. 'The talks don't depend on me. I haven't been in touch with the club management, so I haven't heard a clear "yes" or "no" yet.'
Arshavin is set to leave Zenit's training camp in Dubai en route to London, though may have to return to Russia first to secure a visa.
He played no part in a friendly on Saturday against the Uzbekistan national team and Zenit coach Dick Advocaat last night suggested that his departure was imminent.
'I think there will be news on Tuesday,' said the former Rangers boss. 'I am constantly in touch with (club general director) Maxim Mitrofanov and I look forward to the latest news.'
Arsenal refused to comment.

i think this is a big signing for us. Just the player we need imo, to create a spark that is sometimes missing for us.

Nasri- Cesc - Rosicky
Arshavin
Ade RVP

Will be interesting, who will do the hack work in midfield though if Cesc and Arshavin play in the middle. Given Wenger's record of buying CM's and playing them out wide, he could end up on the wing instead of Rosicky. Wonder if he will be able to have the same influence in the EPL given how fast and physical the comp is.delfino_1936 wrote:i think this is a big signing for us. i know that adebayor is highly rated amongst gooners but imo i think we should cash in on him and bendtner, we have quality up front with rvp and eduardo and hopefully soon also vela. and i like the idea of partnering these guys with a more powerful player but i think we can find far better then ade's and bendtner (just my opinion).
but all in all the arshavin deal looks great and i cant wait for this
walcott cesc nasri
arshavin
rvp eduardo
i think arshavin will fill the bergkamp void or the hleb void depending on where we play him

how is it that arshavin is the play you think you need, when you still have all these poofy soft cocks that can lay a tackle?

you're right in a sense but we still need some more spark up forward imo cause at times we do look lackluster.Levendi wrote:how is it that arshavin is the play you think you need, when you still have all these poofy soft cocks that can lay a tackle?

i like the idea of arsharvin becouse i think since hleb's departure we have lacked a little attacking creativity.
i also think we are in need for another cm, as well as a cb, and just personally another striker.
