Victoria Balomenos is set to return for The Reds against Melbourne.
Adelaide United’s Women’s team is hoping to get back into the winner’s circle when it takes on Melbourne Victory Women at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday (29 November) in Round 6 of the Westfield W-League.
The Ladies in Red have a perfect record at home with maximum points from their two matches so far this season, and another victory over Melbourne could see United back up into the top four of the tightly contested league.
United’s Women are coming off a hard fought scoreless draw against Canberra United in the nation’s capital last weekend, the result giving The Reds their first point away from home.
Reds Women’s Coach Michael Barnett says his team has set its sights on a top four place and defeating a Victory team that sits just a point behind would be crucial with five games to go in the minor round.
“The main objective is to get into and stay in the top four so that we can reach the finals,” Barnett said.
“That is the goal we have set ourselves for the season, and this game will get us another step closer to that finals berth.”
United are set to welcome back Westfield Matildas striker Victoria Balomenos after she missed the clash with Canberra through suspension, while Renee Harrison is also in the squad having recovered from concussion that she sustained against Perth Glory a fortnight ago.
“With Victoria and Renee both returning, they will give us some added experience and hopefully it will help get us over the line and collect the three points,” Barnett said.
While The Reds are yet to meet Melbourne in the Westfield W-League, Barnett believes the classic South Australia v Victoria rivalry will provide added incentive for his charges to get one up over their eastern boarder nemesis.
“Saturday’s game brings back the old state rivalry with South Australia v Victoria, so both teams will be desperate to win this one,” Barnett said.
Hostilities start at 2.30pm (ACDT) on Saturday with gates open at 11.30am. Tickets will be available at the Holden Street gate of Hindmarsh Stadium and there will be a Small Sided Games display involving a number of local Adelaide schools prior to the match.
