Scalzi fires United home
A Sandra Scalzi hat-trick has guided Adelaide United to a 3-2 victory over the Newcastle Jets in their Westfield W-League clash at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday.
After a 1-1 first half, the Reds opened up a match-winning lead when Scalzi struck two goals in five minutes immediately after the break.
But they were forced to earn the three points by a determined Jets line-up.
Newcastle had plenty of the play in the final 20 minutes and was finally rewarded when they scored its second goal at the 89th minute through a Cheryl Salisbury header.
Leia Smith also put the ball in the back of the net during injury time but one of her team-mates was deemed off-side before she got the shot away.
It was an entertaining clash with both teams running hard and at times showing some evasive play.
The goalkeepers from both sides also performed well and had their work cut out for them, especially in the second half.
Earlier it had been a 1-1 opening with Scalzi striking first.
She found some space in the box and converted from close range at the 11 minute.
Stacy Day hit back in the 38th minute and the teams were locked away going into the long break.
Reds coach Mike Barnett said the team had a bit of luck at the end of the game but performed well in an entertaining clash.
"Sandra Scalzi came in for her first start and proved she's a natural goal scorer with three really good goals," Barnett said.
"A little bit of confidence that we took out of last week's game flowed into this week."
Jets coach Gary Phillips felt his team should've won the clash after having several opportunities in the dying minutes.
"A couple of defensive errors cost us but hopefully the girls will learn from that and be better team next week," he said.
"Their goalkeeper certainly saw a lot more action than our goalkeeper did and I was proud of their performance. They tried hard and we are getting better each week and I don't think the result was a reflection on our performance."

very interesting to see how some players performed, maybe one or two weaknesses exposed by newcastle late in the game..

I think Salisbury was the difference in the last 10 mins. She almost won the game for them

I thought she did nothing besides score that goal IMO.nanstar wrote:I think Salisbury was the difference in the last 10 mins. She almost won the game for them
I'd say we lapsed concentration again this week, but that could be because of fitness/endurance.

Godders, if scalzi came out, you'd be out for the season with lower back pain having to pick the balls out the back of the net!

They need a new goalkeeper. Second goal was her fault. Three goals against ueensland were her fault. Barney needs to find someone quickly or the season is over.

not sure of her name, but the league will not be taken seriously while players like that are there. this is meant to be the elite level.
Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
Kristi Harvey.. pretty sure defnsive errors were also to blame for those goals..

Lucky win by us. Dont think we won because we outplayed them. Scalzi in the right place at the right time for all 3 goals. Good to see Stacey get on the scoresheet aswell. How many times did they want to hit the post/crossbar. But well done united!

Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
How did they score? Pretty sure it was from a header so what the bleep were the defenders doing? Isn't it their duty to clear defensive headers? Sure, Salisbury is tall, but so is Swaffer, and height shouldn't matter - unbalance the attacker at least. Don't dare blame the goal on the keeper when there are 10 other players on the pitch.uncle chop chop wrote:They need a new goalkeeper. Second goal was her fault. Again, with the three goals against Queensland - who's to say the defenders did as much as they could? Who's to say the midfielders and attackers did as much as they could to prevent the goal? It is never ENTIRELY a goal keeper's fault.
In case you didn't know, soccer/football is a team sport meaning, 11 players on a team, not one.
Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
Queensland goals were terrible. Should have done better. One from a set piece went straight over the keeper. Another nearly went underneath her at quiet a slow pace. Stick your leg out and it wouldnt have gone in. And yes i was at the game. Had a conference in brisbane last week. Just my opinion though. Anyone know when emma is back?
Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
emma has been cleared for a few weeks apparently or was atleast cleared before this game so obviously kristi has proved herself at trainin etc..

Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
why have a goalkeeper if the defenders should have done better? salisbury's header was very tame because her marker put her off balance. the ball went passed her in slow motion. this was just one example. their disallowed goal was lucky as she couldnt get off her line quick enough. this happened countless times. dont get defensive because you are her friend. if she wants to play at the elite level, she has to expect criticism for terrible performances.
Re: W-League Round 2 - Adelaide vs Newcastle
I'm a neutral bystander in this situation, as I'm sure you are.uncle chop chop wrote:why have a goalkeeper if the defenders should have done better? salisbury's header was very tame because her marker put her off balance. the ball went passed her in slow motion. this was just one example. their disallowed goal was lucky as she couldnt get off her line quick enough. this happened countless times. dont get defensive because you are her friend. if she wants to play at the elite level, she has to expect criticism for terrible performances.
Goalkeepers can't be expected to make every save as attackers can't be expected to convert every shot - so what, two goals were scored. We won, we should be happy and praising the team's performance, not downgrading it and criticising ONE person. On that matter, what did you think of other player's performances? (Mind you, I'm not really interested I'm just trying to make you stop criticising one person).
If her marker put her off balance, she shouldn't have made contact with the ball, simple as that.
Their disallowed goal was just that, a disallowed goal so don't bring that up. And be careful of the words you choose, she couldn't get off her line quick enough or she didn't get off her line quick enough. It's a subtle difference but I know what you were implying and that's a tad harsh.
Anyways, why was it that they had numerous scoring opportunities in the last 5 minutes? I'm pretty sure you can't say that was the goalkeeper's fault too can you?
Terrible performance? I think you have too high expectations for women's football.
