Adelaide United announce W-League Squad
Adelaide United FC has released its squad for the upcoming inaugural Westfield W-League Season. Reds W-League Coach Mike Barnett completed his squad of 18, which is headlined by former Matildas champion Di Alagich, the 29 year old the sister of retired Adelaide United defender Richie Alagich.
The squad also includes a host of local talent, namely current Westfield Matildas striker Vicki Balomenos, who has scored five goals in three games for the national team at the ASEAN Football Federation Championships currently being held in Vietnam.
Barnett has spent the past month trialling players and admits it was a tough process narrowing down the squad.
“The trials have been going on for a month now and it hasn’t been easy because we’ve had some really good players putting their hand up to be included, but now we’re just thankful that we’ve managed to reduce it to a squad of 18,” Barnett said.
“It’s exciting with the squad we’ve got together. There is a good blend of youth and experience with the additions of former and current senior and underage national team players to bolster our squad and we expect to be very competitive.”
Other credentialed players featuring in the squad are experienced midfielder Sharon Black, who competed at the 1999 World Cup and 2000 Olympics and former Junior Matildas goalkeeper Sian McLaren.
Barnett also secured Adelaide based Angela Fimmano, Sian McLaren and Rachel Quigley, the trio a chance of being selected for Australia’s U/19 Women’s squad for the upcoming AFC Women's U/19 Pre Qualifiers, which is the first stage of qualification for the U/20 FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Promising 18 year old striker Stephanie Tokich and Sarah Amorim have also been selected, the pair will fly from Canberra and Queensland respectively for each match, while Alagich will do the same, as she works and resides in Sydney.
“They are currently training with the institutes in their states but they will be coming to Adelaide to train on a regular basis,” Barnett said.
Barnett says the squad is looking forward to competing in the 10 round competition, which includes teams from each of the seven Australian Hyundai A-League clubs plus a team from Canberra.
“We will be trying to play good attacking football and we’ll certainly be going out there to score goals,” Barnett said.
“It will be interesting to see how the league goes but after speaking to Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni, he expects the majority of the current Matildas squad to be playing in this league, so I think the standard will be very good.”
The Adelaide United W-League squad’s first official match of the Westfield W-League will be away to the Queensland Roar on Saturday 25 October 2008 at the Queensland Sports & Athletic Centre (Kick-Off 5.30pm ACDT).
The Reds W-League team’s first home game will be against the Newcastle Jets on Friday October 31 at Hindmarsh Stadium (Kick-Off 4.45pm ACDT) and played as a curtain raiser to the Hyundai A-League blockbuster between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.

u must be dissapointed Eb?SpazzTic wrote:Stocco is injured, hasnt actually trained
Re: Adelaide United announce W-League Squad
stocco - knee recon... unfortunate but hope she recovers quickly
and NO ebs shouldnt be disappointed.. just because she isnt contracted doesnt mean she has no chance..
Di and I both are always injured so providing she keeps training and has a "good" attitude she should get the call up...
ebs is an awesome player and can only go forward....

Congratulations to all who were selected. Cant wait to see you all in action. Go W-League AU!!!
Re: Adelaide United announce W-League Squad
With a squad of only 18 including 3 GKs you would hope that a coach has not made selections which include players with a known history of being injury prone!an interesting thing to say shorty... :?
Just joking

I'm sure neits is just pointing out how what you just said can be taken out of context very easily?
