Coppa: Salernitana book Napoli Tuesday 30 September, 2008
Salernitana have set up a Coppa Italia clash with Napoli after seeing off Sassuolo on a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw.
Serie B leaders Sassuolo can feel hard done by, as they had twice taken the lead at the Stadio Arechi, both times through Selva.
However, Salernitana kept fighting back through Marchese and Kyriazis, the latter netting with just seven minutes to spare.
There were no more goals during extra time, so it went to penalties and Salernitana eventually came out on top 6-5.
Pagani’s error was decisive, as his spot-kick cracked against the upright.
Salernitana go through to the next phase, where they will encounter local rivals Napoli.
Salernitana 2-2 Sassuolo
Scorers: Selva 16, 65 (Sas), Marchese 46 (Sal), Kyriazis 83 (Sal)

Juventus vs Catania
We start our Coppa journey for this season tomorrow night. Catania will provide tough opposition, and they have done the last two times they have come to Turin. They made the semi finals last season as well.
This is a chance for a few players to be rested, and some to come back from injury. I think we will see this team start -
---------------------Buffon
Grygera-----Mellberg-----Legrottalie---Molinaro
---------------Zanetti-----Poulsen
Marchionni/Camoranesi----------------De Ceglie
---------Amauri/Iaquinta-----Giovinco
If Camoranesi and Iaquinta are fit to play, then I think they will start, if not then Marchionni and Amauri will slot in. This will give Buffon, Zanetti and Poulsen a chance to get game time under their belts. Zanetti looked very good vs Siena on Sunday, now let's see if he can do it over 90 minutes.
If we win we face Napoli at the start of February. Difficult to predict as it really does go by how serious we do take this match. But if that team I proposed does start then we are in with a good chance.

Coppa: Ibra sinks courageous Genoa
Inter needed extra time and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to see off a Genoa side who had Giuseppe Biava sent off after 19 minutes.
It is still something of an embarrassing setback for the Serie A leaders, as they missed a penalty, but they reach the Coppa Italia quarter-finals for a clash with old rivals Roma.
The visitors were without the injured Diego Milito, Raffaele Palladino, Andrea Gasbarroni and Thiago Motta for this Fifth Round one-off match. The latter spent the night in hospital after a clash of heads left him concussed on Saturday evening.
Inter were unbeaten at home in the Coppa Italia since 2002, but Jose Mourinho took no chances with a strong line-up, Adriano getting another chance to avoid a January move. It's no wonder, as Genoa already held them 0-0 here in Serie A in October. Argentina manager Diego Armando Maradona was in the stands.
Hernan Crespo sprung the offside trap and his angled drive flashed across the face of goal as the 'keeper came tearing out, but there was utter panic in the Nerazzurri box on 15 minutes.
Antony Vanden Borre shrugged off a Walter Samuel tackle down the right flank, chipped Francesco Toldo and had an open goal to aim at, but he hesitated and allowed Sulley Muntari to get back for a decisive block.
There was controversy soon after, as Inter received an incorrect penalty. Adriano was tripped by Giuseppe Biava, but it was just outside the box. The referee had at first given the correct decision and sent Biava off as last man, but after consulting with the linesman he awarded the spot-kick. It didn't matter anyway, as Adriano's weak penalty was saved by Alessio Scarpi.
Jimenez was repeatedly jeered by the San Siro crowd as he put crosses way off target and Adriano's glancing header was well caught. Genoa were by no means sitting back in defence despite playing with 10 men.
A rare Jimenez snapshot was punched away, then Cristian Chivu went on a slalom through two tackles and to the six-yard box before Scarpi prodded the ball off his foot. Just before half-time Genoa were furious that Muntari avoided a second bookable offence for a very late tackle on Vanden Borre.
Crespo came close to an opener with a splendid volley on the bounce, but was charged down by a desperate Matteo Ferrari defensive intervention.
Victor Obinna replaced the fortunate Muntari at half-time to inject some pace into the Inter attack, while Sokratis Papastathopoulos came on for Giandomenico Mesto to shore up Genoa's defence. Within 60 seconds Obinna had whipped a cross to the back post where Crespo just missed as he came sliding in.
Another Adriano header looped over, but moments later Scarpi stuck out a foot to parry Douglas Maicon's fantastic solo run. There was an even better opportunity as Scarpi's brilliant double one-handed save denied Adriano twice from point-blank range!
Maicon flashed another shot across the face of goal and Papastathopoulos got back to block Maxwell after springing the offside trap. There was a scare for Inter as Maxwell's fresh-air clearance in his own box received a let-off from Giuseppe Sculli.
Scarpi had his palms stung by a Javier Zanetti screamer and Jimenez failed to turn in the rebound. From the corner a fantastic Adriano overhead kick brought another incredible save out of Scarpi from six yards!
L'Imperatore finally got his goal just as he was about to be substituted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He rose from seven yards for a towering header on Maxwell's cross from the left. San Siro offered a standing ovation, as Adriano had worked very hard as well as scoring the goal.
Crespo tripped the offside trap and was one-on-one, but Scarpi got down to block. It proved a costly error, as 60 seconds later Genoa equalised! It was an absolutely stunning goal from Marco Rossi, who won a 50-50 with Samuel and unleashed a right-foot screamer into the far top corner that Toldo simply could not stop.
With this scoreline, the Fifth Round tie would go to extra time. Ibrahimovic's blistering free kick from 25 metres shaved the crossbar and another fine Scarpi save denied captain Zanetti with Ibra unable to turn in the loose ball.
It was not enough and the tie went to extra time. Ibrahimovic tested Scarpi with an angled drive, then Crespo's rising drive brought a fingertip save out of the goalkeeper. Moments later Esteban Cambiasso's wayward shot set up by Obinna turned into an assist that Crespo missed at the back post.
Inter found a way through 10 minutes into extra time. Ibrahimovic's rocket from 35 metres bounced right in front of Scarpi so it ricocheted off his chest into the path of Cambiasso for a tap-in.
Ibrahimovic put the icing on the cake with a classic trickster goal. His first attempt was parried by Scarpi's foot, but the Swede drew the goalkeeper out and dummied a cross before nutmegging the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot.
It was all over, but first Toldo had to palm out a Ruben Olivera free kick.
Inter 3-1 Genoa aet
Scorers: Adriano 75 (I), Rossi 80 (G), Cambiasso 100 (I), Ibrahimovic 104 (I)
Missed penalty: Adriano 20 (I)
Sent off: Biava 19 (G)

HALF TIME
Juve lead Catania in Coppa
Marco Marchionni has given Juventus the half-time Coppa Italia lead over Catania, but Alessandro Del Piero hit the post.
The winner of tonight's game will go on to face Napoli in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on February 4. The other quarters are Inter-Roma, Udinese-Sampdoria and Lazio-Torino.
Claudio Ranieri reshuffled with Gigi Buffon and Cristiano Zanetti continuing their fight for fitness, while Sebastian Giovinco started wide left in support of Amauri and Alessandro Del Piero.
Catania also made changes, giving a chance to Romanian international Niculae Dica, Jorge Martinez and Gianvito Plasmati.
It took all of four minutes for Juventus to break the deadlock, as Albano Bizzarri parried Del Piero's header into the path of Marco Marchionni.
Buffon blocked a Martinez effort and Momo Sissoko was sent clear by Del Piero, while Giovinco drilled wide from Amauri's intelligent assist and the Brazilian had a couple of efforts charged down.
Marchionni muscled Dica off the ball in the penalty area, but Juventus had a fantastic opportunity to make it 2-0 on 36 minutes. Giovinco quickly exchanged passes with Del Piero and Bizzarri rushed out to smother Amauri's tap-in, then the captain's follow-up was off target.
Del Piero was unlucky moments later, as his repeated dummies confused the three defenders and he squeezed the angled drive through with his weaker left foot, but it cracked against the inside of the far post.
Juventus 1-0 Catania (Half-Time)
Scorers: Marchionni 4 (J)
Juventus: Buffon; Grygera, Ariaudo, Legrottaglie, De Ceglie; Marchionni, Zanetti, Sissoko, Giovinco; Amauri, Del Piero
Catania: Bizzarri; Silvestre, Sardo, Stovini, Silvestri; Ledesma, Biagianti, Tedesco; Dica; Plasmati, Martinez

When do the semi-finals get played?? Ridiculous that its over 2 legs, the Lega does anything to help the likes of Juve and Inter dont they.
Speriamo per un finale tra Roma e Lazio.
Re: Coppa menefreghista italia
I didn't even realise it was 2 legs until I saw it in this topic. You either one off matches or two legs right through the tournament. Not both, it is silly like that.
First leg is in late March and the second in early/mid April IIRC.

Re: Coppa menefreghista italia
Udinese just cannot take a trick at the moment, another loss, this time on pentlaies. Di Natale missed a last minute penalty in normal time to win the game. It ended 1-1.
Roma's title defence has ended, a 2-1 defeat in Milan vs those bastardi in black and blue.

i say good on Jose for naming a full-strength squad and starting one of a similar nature with the big surprise David Santon named for his competitive debut in defence...not bad for an 19 year old...

anyone got TV details for Lazio-Giuve??????
if anyone has it it'll be RAI and they picked up Coppa semis last season but so far no word on this year.
will not be happy if I have to stream such an important game... the Curva is planning a special coreo of 10-15,000 biancoceleste flags to "bring some colour back to Italian stadia". should be good.
Foggia to score. Rocchi to seal it. 2-0 Lazio, thanks for coming

An away goal and I'll be happy. Trez will likely start as he gets his match fitness up. Only real issues are either Nedved or Giovinco and who starts up front.
Hopefully it is on Rai.
