I would play him there because he CAN play well there, just behind Modric who is his best friend so i think they would work well together knowing each others game. Sure Zokora played well against Chelsea but your praising him like he plays like that every game.

Either way it will be interesting to see how Ramos thinks it will make it even more difficult when Hutton returns from injury hopefully we can start putting together a few wins in a row and move up the table

In January we brought in four international players and this summer saw us add no fewer than eight more:

Goalkeepers- Heurelho Gomes, along with former Spanish international goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez.

Defender- Vedran Corluka;

Midfielders- Luka Modric, David Bentley;

Strikers- Roman Pavlyuchenko, Giovani dos Santos and Fraizer Campbell.

Following the conclusion of the summer transfer window Sporting Director Damien Comolli offered his thoughts:

"I think we got a lot of the players we wanted and early. We decided to make these changes because we feel we're beginning a new cycle, so we had to think about building a team with a future, and that's exactly what we've done. We are younger, there is more depth, and we know that everyone we have brought in is absolutely committed to the Club.

"The fact that so many of the players have international experience is a big plus, but it wasn't the Euros that helped us make our decisions. For example, we signed Luka before the Finals. Watching the players on that stage is simply confirmation. It's very important to have international experience in your squad, but these players are young as well. This is exactly what we wanted and Juande likes players who are young and hungry, but who have experience at the same time, especially of playing on the international stage.

"I am particularly disappointed that we were unable to make one additional signing, another experienced striker. The deal was agreed but fell through in the final moments due to agent activity. It is all too often that judgments are made on how these deals are or are not concluded and the reality and the reasoning that happens is often very different and highly unpredictable.

"Two of our new signings, Vedran and Roman are cup-tied for the UEFA Cup and whilst this is not ideal, we shall work with the whole team to produce good performances. We are building a squad for the league and future seasons and we are all looking forward to getting on with playing football now."

The summer transfer window also, however, included transfer requests from two key members of the squad, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

"There are no guarantees in football and this summer we found ourselves having to deal with the unexpected challenge of both our leading goalscorers making it clear they wished to leave the club," commented Chairman, Daniel Levy.

"I have already stated my opinion on the manner in which our players were approached and the nature of the negotiations surrounding Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov. Yesterday's events were further evidence of the need for the Premier League to review the system.

"I have also previously said that we had no need to sell players on long contracts - this no longer remains practical. The decisions we took to allow the transfers of Berbatov and Keane were made after close discussions with the coaching staff. Juande was clear, and I believe correct, in not wishing to embrace any player within the dressing room that had no desire to play for the badge of this club and for his teammates. Under these circumstances we had no option but to sell these players.

"I should hope that fans look at our squad today and acknowledge the undoubted talent and quality of our new signings, but I cannot deny that I share with them a disappointment that we couldn't add further to replace attacking options.

"It has also been the case again that because we have been a buyer in the transfer marketplace we have been subjected to much speculation and our name has been connected to deals and situations that we had nothing to do with; attempts by selling clubs to push the value of players up has also seen us wrongly accused of not wishing to pay certain sums, again unfounded.

"It was always our intention to continue to invest in the team. For the record, our spend this summer was in the region of £77m and we brought in £72m in player sales. We were fully prepared to spend further, but quality players remain hard to secure.

"We would be remiss to allow the departures of two players to overshadow the many exciting talents that joined the Club this summer. I know that there is a terrific team spirit amongst them and that, whilst young, we have a team we believe we can forge into a strong competitive unit."

We also said farewell to Paul Robinson, Radek Cerny, Tommy Forecast, Pascal Chimbonda, Younes Kaboul, Anthony Gardner, Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque, Joe Martin and Young-Pyo Lee.

We wish them well for the future.

People are saying that the player we almost bought before the window closed was Owen but his agent went to Everton and tried to do what agents do. I like the fact that we wish all those players the best but we dont with the two strikers, petty but good.

Damien Comolli's position as Tottenham's sporting director is under review following his disastrous dealings on transfer deadline day.

Angry chairman Daniel Levy has left the country to spend time on his yacht and reflect on Monday night's events.

A Spurs official confirmed that Levy is 'letting the dust settle' before making a decision on Comolli's future.

Incredibly, three of Comolli's signings - Kevin-Prince Boateng, Ricardo Rocha and Adel Taarabt - have not even been given squad numbers at Spurs this season, but it is his performance on Monday which is under intense scrutiny.

Levy told Comolli, along with manager Juande Ramos, that he would personally oversee the Berbatov deal to United and the club's sporting director was expected to line up a series of recruits that Spurs could sign at a stroke.

Instead he failed in a deal to bring in Sergio Garcia from Real Zaragoza - 'nailed on' to sign for Spurs early on Monday - and the striker instead joined Real Betis.

Ramos, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Spanish league, had made the striker his top priority.

Although the deal for Emile Heskey was always unlikely, the situation surrounding the proposed acquisition of Kevin Doyle was farcical. Reading boss Steve Coppell had made it clear last weekend that potential suitors had the whole of the summer to pick at the carcass of his relegated club and that he had no intention of selling players on transfer deadline day.

Comolli had been expected to make inroads on Doyle's potential purchase long before Reading took a phone call from a desperate Tottenham at around 10.30pm on Monday. Doyle, away with the Ireland squad, was well aware of Spurs' interest and was desperate to make the move, but Tottenham had left it far too late.

Instead, Spurs were left scrambling for the season-long loan signing of Fraizer Campbell to increase their limited attacking options.

Levy realised that United are winners all round after Spurs effectively agreed to give Campbell experience in the Barclays Premier League and then hand him back next May.

Although Comolli, who joined Spurs in 2005, brought in Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, his summer pursuit of Andrei Arshavin ended in embarrassment and acrimony when Zenit St Petersburg pulled the plug on the deal.

While he has bought some rubbish(most of which is recouped when we sell them), its only natural that hes not going to get 100% correct. If we make a team with the players he bought
Gomes
Hutton Corluka Woodgate Bale
Bentley Modric Zokora Gio
Bent and Pav
plus a host of youngsters making up the rest of the squad.
You cant really give him that much shit..... i still remember the days of Justin Edinborough and Dean Austin being our ful backs and David Howells and Vinny samways running our midfield.

Chris Gunter admitted to a few butterflies before stepping out for a successful return to Premier League action at Chelsea.

The young full-back who only turned 19 in July was back in the line-up for only his second league start since his switch from Cardiff in January. Indeed, it was his first league start since his league debut at Everton in January.

Not that you would have known. Chris was undaunted by such a high-profile encounter in a vibrant atmosphere at Stamford Bridge and coped well with the threat of Joe Cole down Chelsea's left until making way for a tactical reshuffle after an hour of the 1-1 draw.

"I didn't find out until about 11am and it was a great feeling to be back in the side," beamed the Welsh international. "I felt nervous and excitement - you want to play in these games.

"To start at places like Chelsea and play in games like this is what I want to do. I'm pleased to have got on the pitch and to have played quite well.

"They are such a good team that we were never going to have as much of the ball as we did in previous games. We're defenders first of all and it's our job to keep a clean sheet, it was a disappointing goal to give away from a set-piece but I didn't think they opened us up too much, so that's full credit to the whole team.

"In the second half we were better with the ball, we pushed on in the last 10, 15 minutes and we were hoping we could nick it.

"Chelsea haven't lost at home in years and we can be pleased with the draw and how we went about it. It was important to get a good performance and a result and we have to look at how well we've played and try to kick-on after the international break."

I have to say having both 19 year old Welsh fullbacks playing against the cream of world football was one of the highlights of the weekend.....and did they look out of place? FCUK NO

Brum in move to loan Spurs misfit Kevin-Prince

Birmingham are considering a loan move for Tottenham midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is among the players that have put Damien Comolli's influence at White Hart Lane in the spotlight.

Boateng, Ricardo Rocha and Adel Taarabt have not been given squad numbers by Spurs head coach Juande Ramos and a short-term move to the Coca-Cola Championship is still an option now the transfer window has closed until January.

Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan described the deal as 'still a possibility'', and suggested the Germany Under-21 midfielder was close to being bought by another club at the start of the week.

'Another club were about to buy him for a pile of money, but then changed their mind,'' he said in the Birmingham Mail.

Boateng's wages were thought to be standing in the way of a return to Germany, where he established himself at Hertha Berlin before getting noticed by Comolli.

Comolli, as sporting director, has been scouting players for Spurs since 2005 but Ramos gave his assessment of the squad he inherited last season by allowing seven first-team players to leave.

Robbie Keane also left for Liverpool and Dimitar Berbatov for Manchester United, in deals that represented huge profits for the club.

In the case of Berbatov, however, former boss Martin Jol has previously suggested the Bulgaria striker was on his own radar while scoring goals at Bayer Leverkusen in the German league.

Jol also described Taarabt as having the ability to be the next David Ginola, although the midfielder has only made six substitute appearances under Ramos.

Centre-back Rocha has not played under Ramos, and the three will not be given squad numbers unless they are called up for first-team duty.

Manager Ramos happy with Tottenham quality

Tottenham head coach Juande Ramos insists his squad has more quality than when he arrived at White Hart Lane - despite the departure of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.

Berbatov and Keane were instrumental in winning the Carling Cup four months after Ramos was recruited from Sevilla a year ago, but they have since left for Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

Roman Pavlyuchenko has been bought from Spartak Moscow to take Berbatov's number nine jersey, and Ramos is also looking for his side's creativity to come from Luka Modric, who was signed from Dinamo Zagreb.

'I have little doubt that we have a squad of greater overall quality now than when I began at this club a year ago,' Ramos said.

'And by the end of the season our results will have proved this to be the case.

'I know there is much debate about our striker options, but I look at the whole picture and not just a like-for-like exchange.

'I want creativity and attacking flair from many parts of the pitch.'

Fraizer Campbell has been signed on loan as part of the Berbatov deal, and Ramos wants to utilise the youngster's speed.

'Fraizer Campbell brings us pace, power and he's a very good goalscorer,' Ramos told www.tottenhamhotspur.com.

'He has a good workrate and is a handful for defenders, not for the same reasons as Roman, but because of his lightning pace.

'On top of that, he's a natural goalscorer as we saw last season during his time on loan at Hull City. When you've got the ability, it gives you self-belief, and that's what he's got.'

Juande's Assessment

In the middle of the current international break, Head Coach Juande Ramos has taken the time to reflect on the Club's activity in the summer transfer window, which has seen the acquisition of eight new players for the First Team squad.

"I have little doubt that we have a squad of greater overall quality now than when I began at this Club a year ago, and by the end of the season our results will have proved this to be the case," said Juande. "I know there is much debate about our striker options, but I look at the whole picture and not just a like-for-like exchange. I want creativity and attacking flair from many parts of the pitch

"Gomes has been performing at the top level of club football for a long time. He brings a lot to the team in terms of his goalkeeping ability, as we all saw against Chelsea on Sunday, but also with his calming influence and natural leadership. He is a great character to have around the dressing room, which is vital and brings an aura of confidence.

"We have some talented young goalkeepers at the Club and felt we needed some experience to help them develop. Cesar Sanchez brings the experience of playing and winning big competitions, and we also know that he'll be a very reliable goalkeeper if we need him to play.

"We know what Vedran Corluka can do in the Premier League and he has the experience of playing in big competitions with his national team. He can play right-back, centre-back, and also in midfield. He's young but experienced, he's got size but technique, and he's exactly the sort of player we wanted at the back. We wanted a versatile defender.

"Luka Modric brings exactly what we were looking for in terms of creativity in our midfield. He has a great work rate, is versatile and fits perfectly into the style of play I want to implement within this team. He is a positive person with an excellent attitude.

"David Bentley is an extremely skilful player with great technical ability who fits into our football philosophy. His set piece and crossing ability will be of huge importance to the team. He has shown that he is completely committed to playing for Spurs, with a desire to develop as a player and achieve things with this club.

"Giovani is a great prospect. His potential is huge on a physical, technical and mental level. He has the ability to play wide on the right and left and particularly as a number ten supporting the striker. He can create, finish and make things happen out of nothing. He is someone who clearly enjoys his football and his experience comes from having played on the world stage from a very young age.

"We have seen what Roman Pavlyuchenko is capable of from his time at Spartak Moscow and particularly at the recent European Championships. He has goalscoring pedigree having been the leading scorer in Russia for the past two seasons. He has vast power and strength but also the talent to finish in the penalty box. We have players of great crossing ability and you need players who can finish in the area. He has everything- pace, power and workrate and that is exactly what we were looking for in our No 9 shirt.

"Fraizer Campbell brings us pace, power and he's a very good goalscorer. He has a good workrate and is a handful for defenders, not for the same reasons as Roman, but because of his lightning pace. On top of that, he's a natural goalscorer as we saw last season during his time on loan at Hull City. When you've got the ability, it gives you self-belief, and that's what he's got."

I talked to my grandad last night, hes Welsh and watched the game against the Azeri (Azerbijan, Sp?) . He said Bale was immense , head and shoulders above every other player on the park, he also said Gunther was great in the first half, he fell away a bit in the second. Bale was apparently beating players for fun, getting forward down the line, im pretty sure Gunther won the penalty for wales too. Both 19....... there is not another left back in the world i would want over Gareth Bale! at 19 he fucking BAM!
On a side note they are playing Russia mid week, because of injuries to a couple of centre backs Gunther will probably cover (hes done it a fair few times for wales) which means he will be marking the Pav. Also i hope Croatia smash England, with our two boys playing blinders.

Poyet rules himself out of Toon reckoning

Tottenham first-team coach Gus Poyet has dismissed reports linking him to the vacant Newcastle manager's job.

The Uruguayan has been installed as one of the favourites to replace Kevin Keegan with the presence of Dennis Wise, given Poyet's partnership with his former Chelsea team-mate at Leeds.

But Poyet insists he has no plans for a reunion with Wise in the north-east and is happy with life under Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane.

"It's very clear that it's nothing at all," he told Spurs' website.

"I'm very happy here. I've had almost a year back at the club with Juande and (Spurs coach) Marcos (Alvarez).

"This is just speculation and it's all too easy because of my relationship with Dennis Wise.

"It's nothing to worry about and all I intend to do is relax and continue with my job."

Gus: Key spell

Gus Poyet feels we're preparing for a vital spell of matches with the season barely a month underway.

First Team coach Gus joined fellow coach Marcos Alvarez and Head Coach Juande Ramos back at the training ground on Tuesday to work with the lads not on international duty - including new loan signing Fraizer Campbell - with their sights set on a spell of five matches in 13 days.

That sequence starts with Aston Villa at the Lane on Monday, September 15 and ends with a trip to Portsmouth on September 28.

"The next two weeks will be great," beamed a typically enthusiatic Gus, back at Spurs Lodge after returning late last night from a weekend away in Spain. "If you are a footballer, you have the chance to play every three days, including our first game in the UEFA Cup.

"It's so important to start with a win against Aston Villa on Monday for two reasons - one, we need to win our homes games and two, I'm sure if we started that way, we can build momentum, pick up points and progress in Europe. Villa could be the key game.

"As a manager or coach, it's not easy because it's about playing matches, warm downs, preparation, playing again and you can't do too much. For a player though, it's magnificent. I used to love spells like this!"

One of the games in this run is a trip to Newcastle in the Carling Cup - which brought us neatly onto press speculation linking Gus with the vacant's manager's job at St James' Park. "It's very clear that it's nothing at all," stated Gus when asked about those rumours.

"I'm very happy here. I've had almost a year back at the club with Juande and Marcos. This is just speculation and it's all too easy because of my relationship with Dennis Wise. It's nothing to worry about and all I intend to do is relax and continue with my job."

International round-up

There are some fascinating international clashes for Spurs fans to look forward to on Wednesday night.

Most eyes will be on Zagreb where Luka Modric and recent arrival Vedran Corluka will lock horns with David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas as Croatia meet England again.

Luka and Vedran are aiming for a hat-trick after home and away victories over England in Euro 2008 qualifying ended England's hopes of travelling to Austria and Switzerland for this summer's finals.

Gareth Bale and Chris Gunter are set to start together again for Wales as they come up against our new striker Roman Pavlyuchenko in Russia. The young Welsh pair were outstanding - Gareth awarded man of the match - as Wales beat Azerbaijan in Cardiff on Saturday. Now they will get the closest view possible of their new team-mate.

Those aren't the only Spurs clashes on Wednesday. Giovani's Mexico take on Canada at Tuxtla Gutierrez where he could come face-to-face with Paul Stalteri.

Gio played 70 minutes of Mexico's 3-0 win against Jamaica on Saturday while Paul skippered Canada again in their 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Honduras.

TUESDAY ACTION

It's all or nothing for Tomas Pekhart and his Czech Republic Under-21 side in the European U21 qualifiers. The striker, currently on loan at Southampton, faces Ukraine in a match they must win after losing against Turkey on Saturday. Even that might not be enough as Saturday's win took the Turks to the top of Group Two and they only need a draw against Armenia to go into the play-offs and send the Czechs out.

Danny Rose is in the England Under-19 squad for a friendly against Holland at Shrewsbury while goalkeeper Oscar Jansson is also in U19 friendly action for Sweden against Finland.

DIDIER CLOSING IN

Didier Zokora's Ivory Coast were held to a surprise draw in Mozambique but still only need a point against Madagascar to progress to the third round of African qualifying. Didier played the full 90 minutes in Maputu on Sunday.

Ressies push Villa all the way

The only goal of the game on 23 minutes settled the contest in favour of Aston Villa as our reserve side fell to a first defeat of the season at Villa Park on Monday night.

It turned out to be an unfortunate own goal that determined the destination of points and, despite a second half rally, Villa held firm and won the night.

Marlon Harewood drilled wide on five minutes as he attempted to put his experience and power to effective use in a Villa side that contained a liberal sprinkling of players with a Premier League pedigree.

The man many of the locals had come to have a glimpse at was Carlos Cuellar, the recent recruit from Rangers at a reported £8m, who has yet to feature at first team level due to injury. He was partnered by Zat Knight at the back, while there was a familiar face on the Villa right in Wayne Routledge.

Chris Herd was next to fire just wide of the upright on 19 minutes as the home side pretty much dictated the tempo of the encounter with some lively wing play.

Three minutes later Villa took the lead in fortunate circumstances. A Zoltan Stieber corner fizzed through a crowd of players and sat up nicely for Herd to take a potshot on goal. Ben Alnwick made a superb reaction block, but the ball diverted onto the knee of David Hutton, who was on post duty, trickling over the line and into the net.

Isaiah Osbourne then rattled the crossbar before, in the moments before half-time, Routledge sped through on goal and should have scored, but poked wide of Alnwick's right hand post. Harewood burst through in a similar fashion before the whistle sounded with the same end result, albeit past the other post. Kevin Prince Boateng mounted a response at the other end, but shot wide in first half stoppage time.

Adel Taarabt and Hutton combined to present Boateng with the first chance of the second period, the German teed up to shoot from the edge of the area, but opted for placement rather than power and planted wide of the post,

Hutton carved himself out a chance on 56 minutes, this time opting for power and blasting over the crossbar.

Whatever Clive Allen said at half-time certainly seemed to have an effect on his side as an, at best, lethargic first half display was replaced by an energetic and imaginative start to the second.

Villa were pressed firmly on the back foot as the likes of Hutton and Andy Barcham injected pace into the team's efforts, supported by the unlikely source of Ricardo Rocha making sorties from the back.

Adam Smith and Andros Townsend took the place of Takura Mtandari and Kyle Fraser-Allen on 65 minutes, both substitutes having enjoyed some first team exposure over the pre-season period.

A breakthrough continued to prove elusive despite a far greater share of possession, with a Taarabt drive failing to really trouble Elliott Parish in the Villa goal with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Villa appeared to have weathered a minor storm as we entered the final ten minutes and established a foothold back in the game. Clive sent on striker Alex Olsen in place of Rocha for the last six minutes in a late bid to salvage some reward from the night.

It was not to be.

Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has reportedly been told not to go out near White Hart Lane because lots of "dark-skinned people" live there.

Ex-Spurs forward Sergei Rebrov was quoted by the Daily Mirror as telling Russian magazine Football Weekly as telling Pavyluchenko he should not risk walking close to the ground because of the high crime rate.

Ukrainian Rebrov, who played for Tottenham between 2000 and 2004, said: "I wouldn't go for a walk on my own around White Hart Lane.

"A lot of dark-skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else.

"It's not nice to be a robbery victim. So I suggest that Roman doesn't walk but drives around that area."

Tottenham is based in the north London borough of Haringey, which has a non-white population of around 35 percent.

Pavlyuchenko arrived from Spartak Moscow on transfer deadline day in a £13.8 million deal after impressing for Russia at Euro 2008.

Daws targets win

Michael Dawson says it's vital we build on the positive performance and result at Chelsea by taking maximum points against Villa on Monday night.

We fought back from 1-0 down to gain a creditable 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in our last outing in the Barclays Premier League back on August 31.

Following the international break, we now face a tough test against Martin O'Neill's improving Villa side at the Lane, kicking-off at 8pm.

"Chelsea was a good performance, we knew what we needed to do and showed character after going 1-0 down," commented the central defender at Spurs Lodge. "When you consider what happened in the first two games it would have been easy for the heads to go down when we went behind but we kept fighting and it paid off.

"We all know that the first two games were very disappointing and following Chelsea, we now need to win because we don't want to let teams get too far away from us. It's such a tough league to play catch up.

"I remember Villa at home last season, the special game for the 125 years, wearing that special kit and the occasion almost went flat for us at 4-1 down. Thankfully we managed to come back and get a draw but that showed what Villa are about.

"They are a good team and they've built a good squad but we need the three points."

I'm going to be pretty disappointed if we don't win this game against Villa. Must win game.
