Cancelling games the day before !!!!

Post by Željko Jurin »

Sorry but I've got a beef, and I know some of you wont agree, but why do clubs cancel junior games up to 18 hours before ???? :( :( :(

It's 7.45 Sunday morning, it's looking pretty good outside, and not much rain overnight, so I rekon some pitches might be OK this morning (some might not be also, so fair enough)

I know you will say to save parents time not driving to the other side of town for nothing etc, etc, etc, but for the younger ones the drive isnt too far usually.

And arent the games meant to be for the kids, not for us parents, so lets give them the best possible chance of playing, and see what the weather is like at kick-off time, and what the condition of the pitch is, before making a decision ???

Could not agree more.

It's supposed to be up to the Ref anyway.

Yeah then we will have something else to blame the ref for :P

Like everyone was this morning when two games were cancelled at short notice by the ref because of the condition of parts of the pitch.

It all comes down to the FFSA and Wuz Factor 9 - our U13 school comp was played on much worse pitches and in much worse weather conditions yesterday.

Yeah I totally agree, it's crap. The sun is out now

We played yesterday on a wet, cold muddy pitch the kids loved it.

It's a winter sport !!!!!

Like I said, I dont mind the game being called off just before kick off if the conditions and the pitch are a hazard, but to call the game off the day before is a joke :( :( :(

i witnessed some pitches this weekend and can say that their condition were very poor, do you feel that some clubs are preserving them for the Senior games? call it what you want, my theory.. the Raiders grounds get bagged all the time, but those cabbage patch pitches were not as bad as some i saw. could i get some feedback on, ground state, are they not supposed to be clearly line marked? should a manager place complaints in if the start time is more than 15 mins? should the ref if provided by the club have a whistle that at least works? am just about sour grapes?

Yep some clubs are trying to look after the pitches but also player saftey and welfare.

Yes they are mean't to be clearly marked and yes I witnessed a few shockers this weekend, I'm not sure about the timing thing there is alot of variables that make a game run over time, maybe someone else can help you with that one. For sure all players listen to a whistle put a spare in your kit bag.

So when would u like a phone call to indicate that the grounds are water logged 2 to 3 days before it rains?? How are the clubs ment to know how much its going to rain??

so you would like to arrive at the pitch and then find out your not going to play.

I would much prefer to know well before hand so i don't have to drive out for no reason. Esepecially for away games!!!

Well, yes. I would prefer that than getting a phone call the day or 2 days earlier.

At the end of the day, it should be up to the match Referee full-stop!

Junior football isn't just about the player, there are the parents doing the driving and often siblings involved as well. Knowing that a match is cancelled beforehand is always better for a family than having it called off after you arrive.

Can't agree with that one either. Refs are not trained as groundsmen and in the middle of winter, pitches do not recover from being ripped apart. Similarly, with the lack of water available over summer, the prime growing season, the pitches do not get a chance to build up a firm root base. There comes a time when the ground needs to be protected and the ref is not always the best man for the job and often those decisions CAN be made a day or two out from the match.

On the other hand, a ref is perfectly able to judge if a pitch is unplayable at the time of kickoff.

Like a lot of things in life, this isn't a clear, black and white situation.

The other thing to remember is that a spate of cancellations like we're experiencing at the moment is fairly rare.

Back in the 'old days', when we played on whatever swamp was provided, pitches became bogs at the start of winter and stayed that way. I can remember playing week after week on a home ground where I was literally ankle deep in mud in one corner (poor drainage, I'm not saying that was typical). The point is though, if grounds are allowed to be chopped up, they stay that way.

I took my cousin to a country game many years ago - we literally herded the sheep off before kickoff and allowed them back on after the match :D

Teddles, I thought a Ref's job was exactly as you put it - to judge whether (no pun intended) or not a pitch is playable.

Whether you or I agree or not. It should be up to a match Referee.

As for the family in tow - while I understand what you're trying to say, that's a risk surely everyone must accept considering we play a winter sport.

Caveat: no attack intended, Teddles. Just replying.

Unlike a lot of people on this forum, I can tell the difference between discussion and attack

On the ref, there's a difference between 'unplayable' and long term damage. A pitch can be put temporarily out of action by storms and you're right, that's when a ref needs to make a decision. However, long term damage can often be predicted and avoided days before a match and it's here that a groundsman comes into the equation - he knows what that pitch can and can't take.

My post wasn't meant to suggest that a ref shouldn't be able to make the decision, rather that he's not the only one able to make the decision.

As for families - you don't have junior football without the support of the family. As the player, you can accept the disappointment of getting to a game and having it called off. What about your little sister though (assuming you have one of course), who isn't interested in football but gets dragged to the games because there are no alternatives? Or yoru parent/s who I can assure you usually have lots of other things other than football transport they could be doing.

If you want your family to support your football, you need to understand that it is a burden, an enjoyable one I admit but still a burden. A match takes travelling time (usually half an hour or more each way) plus three hours out of a day - less for younger kids but my lad has to be at the ground an hour before kickoff. That's a big chunk out of a day and knowing the match is cancelled the day before allows a family to do other stuff rather that waste much of the day on a match that doesn't happen.

As a single parent with two kids who never misses a game (even when I don't have them), I can assure you that a game cancelled before hand is a blessing where loosing a couple of hours for an abandonment is a curse.

Its happened again.....up at some ungodly hour to drive up to the hills only to get to a water sodden pitch that is bad enough for the game to called off....funny enough though the home team wanted to play at the Raiders "Cabbage Patch" pitches and the FFSA denied them the ability to transfer the game, this isnt the first time. why?

I'd rather get there early enough to pressure/talk the Ref into letting the game go ahead. :D
