Our pitch at Westies has come under considerable attack this season which is absolutely justified of course. My obvious response is at least everyone else only has to play there once.
What in the hell can we do considering it is council owned and maintained . Just when it starts to look a little flatter and greener some knob will drive their 300 dollar car across it and destroy it again. This problem occurs every year to many local pitches how do we stop the rot?? Are we legally allowed to fence it off and who pays??? This is a serious blight and a detractor from our beautiful game. Thoughts, ideas people
have you applied to get your ground posted as a few others in your local council have? your ground may be different to most though as it is tacked onto a primary school
Contact your local council and ask to talk with the development officer in charge of parks and grounds (there is one at every council beleive it or not) organise a meeting and discuss with him/her if you would be allowed to apply for a development of a post fence . The fence must meet certain regulations such as the obvious ( emergency services access) but there should be no problem organising a fence around the oval. you will not get one around your pitch tho
The council would make the club pay for it & upon termination of the clubs lease it would become council property.
You'd think that the council would at least put up a permapine fence so that people have access not fuckwits in cars! It would save them having to return all the time to fix up the pitch. (with a few loads of loam )
Playford Council put a lot of effort in getting our pitch ready during the off-season & the first rainy night we got some hoon tears it up right in the centre circle.
It will cost in the vacinity of +$40K to get posts placed around the park your pitch is on. We approached the council a few years back and that was the price they quoted.
Councils will not use permipine anymore, dont ask me why, some environmental reason.
Salisbury Council are really not interested in doing this, it is cheaper for them to return every couple of months to fix it.
The main concern for local councils is money. Westies pitch was run down last year then came the water restrictions. When the council was contacted their response was we only do ovals and parks once every 2 years and it wasnt our year for maintenance.
They have decided to do something soon but whats the point in the middle of winter, now the rain has come, and you have juniors and seniors training everyday of the week. As soon as you put any seed or grass down it will just get chewed up again. Guess we will just have to see the season out and see what we as a club can do ourselves.

have a look at brahma lodge and st augustines ground...you'll find they have been posted off over the last few years!! have westies requested??
problem may be on the school side, rest of ground may be o.k, but need to ask. finance may also be an issue but you'll never know if you don't ask..
there is a 50-50 council grant that would most probably apply for fencing.. You'd have to pay half, capital works grant it is possibly called.. ask your treasurer
You guys are in the Salisbury Council too - they allowed a baseball club where we are to completely fence the boundary of their pitch..
We've had similar trouble with hoon drivers, especially the night of or after a heavy rain.. w@nkers
When you're asking the Council to do something for you you are really asking rate payers to do it for you.
Not every rate payer wants your grounds fenced.
As a Councillor everyone is making requests for a variety of things and there is only so much in the budget.
Best way is to apply for every grant, scheme you can and get your local member to submit a council budget bid.
Don't forget to mention the words "public liability".

I'm suprised that there are still as many dubiously covered cricket pitches around these days in the oc health and safety times we live in. Have seen a few dodgy ones this year already and have heard a lot of other stories.

if this comment is in line with the topic then are you saying we should put posts around our beautiful cricket pitch which only stands 2ft higher than the rest of the ground and which has a coucil and SAASL approved rubber mat over it and 10tonnes of sand just to be sure man there is nothing dubious about it...it stands out quite clearly from mt lofty and is softer to fall on than any mattress you can buy from dreamland just ask anyone here who has played there, they all love it and cant wait to come back
In answer to your question though if visiting teams have concerns they take it up with the ref of the day....If in his opinion the ground is safe then the game goes on...but if OH&S is your real concern then maybe we should put foam padding around the goals like the AFL does.....

Well personally I am not massively concerned and it can be an annoyance to play on pitches with cricket pitches but life goes on. I was going off on a bit of a tangent wasn't I? But I am suprised that some grounds are deemed safe (with new OHS rules etc.).
Are you from Macedonia by any chance Handyman? Holy crap there is a lot of sand on that cricket pitch.

more sand there than at glenelg beach at the moment..... its driving me nuts changing to screw ins every time i cross the half way line and back to moulds coming back i think the natives of the club want to name the pitch mt macedon but keep it quiet otherwise the whole naming rights thing will come up again you'll find me next to the really loud bald guy drinking beer on any given sunday after 3pm

Laney, show us where we ever said we had world class facilities, however pitch has held up ok considering both a Saturday and Sunday club play and train on it, as well as juniors.
No games have been cancelled due to pitch conditions since I've been there, can you say the same about your duck pond?
Could it be that your so sensetive cos you know you wouldn't get a run out there? Go put your floaties on son.
