MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal are set for an £18m battle over Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
The Gunners see the Dutch frontman as a potential replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor.
But United are in the driving seat after Huntelaar revealed he is wanted by the Premier League champions and “loves United”.
The Ajax striker has been on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar since his days as a youngster at PSV Eindhoven, the club from which United signed Ruud van Nistelrooy six years ago.
Ferguson is in the market for a powerful target man as an alternative option to Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.
He has also considered Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.
But Huntelaar, who is also being tracked by Juventus, is Ferguson’s first choice.
And with the Dutchman’s agent Arnold Oosterveer set to return from holiday today, Huntelaar wants a deal with United.
“I love clubs with great history such as Ajax and I also love United,” said Huntelaar.
“It’s a club that makes me dream, especially as Ruud van Nistelrooy played there and did great things with them.
“I know certain English clubs are following me, such as Manchester United, who are very interested in me.”
Talks to keep Huntelaar at Ajax, where he has two years left on his contract, stalled at the end of last month.
Ajax insist they want to keep him, but the £13m arrival of Serbian striker Miralem Sulejmani last week leaves the way clear for Huntelaar to depart.
United and Real Madrid will come face to face at the first meeting of the European Club Association – which replaces the G14 – today in Nyon, Switzerland. Real president Ramon Calderon admits they are losing their fight to lure Cristiano Ronaldo.
Calderon said: “We have not had any discussions with Ronaldo, because Manchester United say they don’t want to sell.
“We don’t want to be disrespectful to them.
“They have said many times that they don’t want to sell the player, so we can’t do anything.”
But United are set to lose assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, who is expected to take over as Portugal boss.

Re: Arsenal and Man Utd to fight for Huntelaar
He'll go too bayern if toni leaves.
United if berba doesn't want to leave tottenham. Santa doesn't leave blackburn. Podolski stays at bayern..
Juve if they can be assed getting into the transfer market before a week until the window closes.
Arsenal. Although he is probably too old for wegner.
Chelsea. Too rot.
Inter. Too suck off zlatan.
Real. Too watch ruud do it.
Barca. If he wants mid table.
Basically. Won't be first choice at these clubs. Will warm the pine for the cash.

Re: Arsenal and Man Utd to fight for Huntelaar
Arsenal wont be able to buy him unless they sell first, Wenker said three days ago that they are a selling club and they can only buy cheap. They have to make 20 million pounds a year for the next 20 just to pay for the new stadium. If they sell Hleb and Ade though,,, mebbe,
"IT LOOKS LIKE HODDLE HAS FOUND GOD, THAT MUST HAVE BEEN ONE HELL OF A PASS"
