AMUSING EVENTS
Now I will preface this by saying that Downs totally outplayed and thoroughly deserved their win against Westies reserves yday. However, there is 1 event that could only happen in the reserves league (btw it had no bearing on the result).
Penalty awarded to Downs and like all keepers you try and get the player to put the ball on the penalty spot (as should occur). Most players want to put it slightly away from the spot. As all would be aware the penalty spot is ususually dug out.
After I pointed out that the ball was not on the spot the referee proceeded to measure the penalty spot by pacing out the distance from the line. He then come to the conclusion that the ball should be placed to the side of the spot and 6 inches closer to goal.
Now I have just about seen everything when the line marking is ignored!!! WTF
Almost as amusing as a few years ago playing Vale and the reserves referee waived play on (played advantage) after the ball went out of play.
The joys of amateur, amateur soccer

While we're still on the Downs i have to say CPK i was very disappointed yesterday with the level of sledging from the Downs faithful behind the goal. It is usually much better than yesterdays dismal effort i felt comfortable in goal all day C+ sledging at best!!! C'mon boys lift your game.
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Haha gotta love the penalty spot remark.
I played away against Postel in the B's a few years ago and we were awared a free kick inside the D just outside the penalty area. The ref lined their wall up 1 yard away from the penalty spot between the spot and the penalty area... I tried to explain to him that the D respresents 10 yards from the penalty spot but he was a bit slow and could/wouldn't understand. He said he paced out 10 steps. He was only 5 foot 2'' though hahahaha. Baby steps
Anyway, Vig missed the lot

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
It is quite funny, but if you didint complain in the first plance then it would have been left on the spot. The ref paced the correct distace to where he thought it was, which is a pretty smart/fair thing to do when there is a discrepancy. Unfortunately with out pitch the way it is, bumpy wise, some things are unavoidable, specially when, as has been said, everyones pacing is different. I thik the 6 inches though would not have stopped Hullsey from sticking it in the back of the net.Car Park Keeper wrote:Now I will preface this by saying that Downs totally outplayed and thoroughly deserved their win against Westies reserves yday. Who's decision is more important in a game of football, the referees or the groundsmans!
Things I am owed because they're too tight to pay up:
Colossus: One House
Costa: One Lunch
Oh and add in
Colossus: one photo and one letter from his "attorney".

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
I guess the lines are marked/measured for a reason (ie penalty spot, 6 yard box, 18 yard box). I knew I should have paced out the 6 yard box myself.Hawkesy wrote:Who's decision is more important in a game of football, the referees or the groundsmans!
Rexie you are dead right, still would have scored, made no difference to the game.
You guys behind the goal were a bit quiet yday. Just not the Downs when you don't cop more as a keeper:!:
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Markings are there as a guide only!! If the penalty spot is clearly in the wrong spot, why would a ref allow it to be taken from thereCar Park Keeper wrote:I guess the lines are marked/measured for a reason (ie penalty spot, 6 yard box, 18 yard box). Re: AMUSING EVENTS
The banter from behind the goals at the Downs is reserved for half decent keepers. The better you are the more you cop. Matt Peace cops more than most as he is regarded as the best. And you say is was very quiet eh? Well one could assume your not rated. Maybe it was the weather? Who knows?
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Hey marooned your theory sounds ok but I was basing my opinion on my previous trips to argana so must have been the weather

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
In a recent Div 2 game against MA Hawks, the referee would not let the keeper take a goal kick from where he wanted in the 6 yard box. The ref pointed to a spot on the line in the right corner and that was where it had to be taken.
He was later found on the sideline post-game reading a book on the laws of the game (true story).

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Years ago that used to be the rule (it had to be taken on the side the ball was deemed to have gone out). It's quite surprising because the Hawks have probably got the best club referee that I've seen so far.Breakers17 wrote:In a recent Div 2 game against MA Hawks, the referee would not let the keeper take a goal kick from where he wanted in the 6 yard box. Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Yeah it was a pretty crap effort by the boys behind the goals and it might of had to do with the shit weather or do I say we only sing when we are winning. Did you give your shorts back to your sister? Might of helped if you actually pulled a crowd we felt intimidated by your 15 supporters, not. Will remember this comment and next year will unleash a verbal blitzkrieg on you thats if the westies would want you after that shocking effort you put in.
There is no I in team, but there is a u in suck...
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Sometimes when I was keeping at the Downs the sledging of opposition forwards used to annoy me a bit.
Some of the stuff that was said was brilliant....but....
The opposition forwards would get upset and pissed off and try to kick the crap out of me.
But if you're an opposition goalkeeper and the Downs are scoring easily, sledging isn't necessary to put you off your game.
Like marooned said, the better the keeper you are the more the boys will try to put you off your game.

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
I've got the most amusing one, our last home game against the Downs the referee stopped the game to remove a single child picking sower sobs from behind the goals
yet I've seen that same referee allow 40 or 50 Downs supporters yell abuse to keepers from the very same position the kid was removed from & we've seen it for years.
Now thats what I find AMUSING.....

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
That's a little better legga but your comments didn't need to be so personal Looking forward to next year barring more inclement weather, wardrobe malfunctions, incarcerations etc.
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Sensible decision by the ref. He has a duty to protect players and spectators. A small child picking flowers can easily be hurt by a wayward strike on goal, a grown adult cannot or at least will see it coming and move.nugget66 wrote:I've got the most amusing one, our last home game against the Downs the referee stopped the game to remove a single child picking sower sobs from behind the goals

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
I accually thought it was the parents job to protect there kids not the referee's, but my point is Hawksey I've seen other supporters behind goals be removed many many times...... & that is all !
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
I never had a problem with anyone being behind my goal (unless they were throwing objects), goalkeeping can be a lonely life.
that's why so many of us frequent this forum.
I often used to tell referees "they're OK you don't need to move them, I'm fine."
Kids are different than spectators, they usually aren't aware of the game and the possibility of being hit by a stray shot (or player).

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
I saw a bloke chuck minimum chips in the goals at Pontians ground it was funny watching the keeper fight off the seagulls
Re: AMUSING EVENTS
The most amusing thing I have seen this year was when the groundskeeper marked out the lines by hand, using only a bucket full of white powder. You can only imagine the mist exploding as the ball hit the line.
Another amusing line marking; Whilst our reserve grade was playing, the groundskeeper decided now was the time to mark the pitch. When the ball was up the other end, the groundskeeper quickly marked out the opposite side. It was sad, but funny.

Re: AMUSING EVENTS
Quite possibly when the reserves kicked off they thought it was acceptable, and then when the official referee arrived he said to them he wanted it done. When I saw Asteras v Adelaide Uni in the cup I thought the lines were barely visible, but when the referee rocked up he said he wanted it done. There was no reserves game so it didn't affect anything.
