Warm-up victory for Russia
Recently crowned UEFA Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg's marksman Pavel Pogrebnyak and Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scored one apiece for Russia, while Hertha Berlin striker Marko Pantelic was on target for Serbia.
Both opponents looked slightly rusty from the start, producing a catalogue of unforced errors in the opening 10 minutes.
But in the 12th minute Russia went into a 1-0 lead through Pogrebnyak, who fired home a 35-yard free-kick, the ball flying in off the post.
Six minutes later Pantelic missed a clear chance to equalise, heading over the crossbar from six yards from Dejan Milovanovic's well-struck free-kick.
Russia dominated the play but Pantelic nevertheless levelled five minutes before the break, clipping in from close range past helpless goalkeeper Igor Akinfeyev following a Russian mix-up in defence.
Russia replied positively and began peppering Serbia's goalie Vladimir Dislenkovic with shots but failed to restore their lead before the interval.
But three minutes after the restart Pavlyuchenko made it 2-1, firing in from seven yards following a Dmitry Sychev cross from the left.
In the closing stages Russia were in control, stifling Serbia's attacking efforts and easily holding their advantage to the final whistle.
Guus Hiddink's Russia open their Euro 2008 campaign against Spain on June 10 followed by holders Greece (June 14) and Sweden (June 18) in the group stage.
Dark Horses for this summer could spring a surprise

Greece had their day four years ago dont see the qualifiying out of group stage. Just like Denmark in 1992. IMO Greece will finish bottom of group.Rigoni 10 wrote:i reckon they could easily come out of their group.k-man wrote:Dmitry Sychev this guy could lead the scoring charts if Russia fire in this tournament.

ok during the war alot of families fled there was no football played in Bosnia for 5 years league anyway. Not like Serbia and Croatia they didnt experience the level of fighting that we did.
First that comes to my mind is our coach at Bosnia Adelaide his nephew
Eldin Jakupovic (Grasshoppers Zurich). Goalkeeper. Born: 02.10.84. Caps: 0 Goals: 0.
Bosnian-born keeper who came to international prominence during FC Thun's shock Champions League qualification in 2005. Returned to former club Grasshoppers on loan from Lokomotiv Moscow at the start of last season in the hope of securing a Euro 2008 place. Looked set to be overlooked though until a post-viral syndrome ruled out third-choice keeper Fabio Coltorti, handing Jakupovic a late call-up.
He was listed in the national team of Bosnia against Greece i believe and agreement between switzerland and Bosnian football federation was made.
Zlatan wanted to play for Bosnia i have a article on that if you ask him what he is he will say Bosnian. Dont listen to Skliro hes full of it!
Its not just Bosnians it goes for the whole of the former Yugoslav states.
Sanel Kuljic plays for austria in Austria vienna playing in this Euros
Jasmin and Samir Handanovic from Slovenia as my mate said from Slovenia half the national team from Slovenia is Bosnian. there was 5 at euro 2000.
I could go on but it is a complex situation at the moment in Bosnia.
1990 SQUAD THAT REACHED the quarterfinals in Italy the core of the players were Bosnia
Safet Susic, Faruk Hadzibegovic,Refik Sabanazovic,Farhudin Omerovic ,Mirsad Baljić , Davor Jozic,Mehmed Baždarević . All Bosnians It wont be long until Bosnia qualifies for a major tournament.
On another note we have a few players from Brazil and Jamacia that want to play for Bosnia as they are married to Bosnian Women. Nathan Ellington is one. He was selected for jamaica and dominica but he refused because he wanted to play for a Bosnia.

Rumours about playing for Bosnia-Herzegovina or Croatia
In 1999, at the age of seventeen, Zlatan was reportedly rejected by the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team and was given a choice to play for the B selection. He rejected this proposal and started playing for Sweden.
Zlatan has expressed his desire to play for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. In an interview for Bosnian newspaper Dnevni avaz Sport in 2003, he said "I have Swedish passport, Bosnian blood. I am aware of the fact that the Swedes would not let me go but if I was in a position to choose, I would most certainly play for Bosnia-Herzegovina."
Bosnas biggest loss this generation would of been great to see him play alongside Sergei Barbarez, Elvir Bolic and Elvir Baljic. He was the missing player to get us past the post for the last Euro and World Cup campaign.

Re: Warm-up victory for Russia
point: maybe these players have an indentity problem... maybe not proud 2 be bosnian???
"Thats not sexy football!" and "Play the REAL one... again and again"
Re: Warm-up victory for Russia
I wouldnt say that. Its more a case of dual citizenship and a beter quality of life compared to what is offered in Bosnia at the moment.the REAL one wrote:point: maybe these players have an indentity problem... maybe not proud 2 be bosnian???
Switzerlands goal Keeper wanted to play for Bosnia but when he fleed the waring country at a young age he established a professional contract and by doing so he had to play for switzerland before Bosnia if good enough. If he opted to play for Bosnia he would of lost citizenship. Life is much easier in Switzerland than in Bosnia at the moment.
I've had this discussion with his uncle its nothing to do with pride. In saying that we have produced some quality players and it wont be long until we make a major tournament. Barcelona have started a youth academy in Sarajevo and thins are heading in the right direction.
Re: Warm-up victory for Russia
so if kosovo got a team in time for 2010WC would Valon Behrami be able to play for them?? I know he has already turned down Albania
for all the ex-yu guys you might find this interesting even though he's not bosnian
for all the ex-yu guys you might find this interesting even though he's not bosnian
Fabio Capello isn't the only Italian speaker whose journey to Wembley to night has been full of adventure.
Switzerland midfielder Valon Behrami began life in war-torn Kosovo. His family life has been one of hardship wrapped in love - evident in the tattoos on the left forearm of the 22-year-old who will line up against England.
On it are inscribed not only his date of birth but those of his parents, his sister and his niece. His shirt number at his club Lazio is 85, the year of his birth. Family is at the heart of a search for a new start.
Behrami began the payback at the age of 13. Had it not been for his ability with a football, the family's leave to stay in Switzerland would have expired and they would have been repatriated to the Kosovo they were so desperate to flee.
The teenager was playing for a youth side in Chiasso, a town on the Swiss-Italian border when he was chosen for a representative team. A scout who had political contacts spotted him, saw his talent and potential as a possible future Switzerland international and pushed forward the family's case to become Swiss residents.
Behrami said: "If that hadn't happened, we would have had to leave Switzerland six months later and return to Kosovo. I didn't want to leave. I was happy in Switzerland and wanted to stay.
"When I realised I could play international football, I had to decide between Albania and Switzerland. I felt a loyalty towards Albania and naturally my family wanted me to play for them, but Switzerland had been good to me and I consider myself Swiss."
Behrami was a boy of just five when his parents, father Ragip, a manager of a plastics company in Mitrovica, and his secretary mother Halime took the decision to try and secure a better life for Valon and his eight-year-old sister Valentina.
The war had already claimed the lives of other family members. Valon lost an uncle, an aunt and one cousin when they were caught in crossfire as they tried to escape the war zone.
Behrami added: "For my parents it was a big sacrifice because they knew they were leaving their parents, brothers and sisters, but they made a decision ultimately for our futures.
"They held degrees in Kosovo but that didn't count for anything in Switzerland and they had to start again from scratch. They took jobs as factory workers and a lot of the time that they were out at work, my sister and I were left at home.
"The Swiss were taking in a lot of people from Kosovo at that time and they were very good to us partly because my parents arrived and had the desire to work. They weren't going there to be on the dole. We had to learn Italian. We were able to help our parents with it. I'm still helping my father now."
Behrami, the 3,000 metre champion of Switzerland when he was 11, chose football over athletics but never thought he would be good enough to turn professional.
At 18, though, he was signed by Serie B side Genoa and had spells with Udinese and Verona before joining Lazio. Tonight he steps out at Wembley and hopes to play in the Premier League in the near future. The journey is all but complete.
"It just didn't seem possible that I would become a professional footballer. School is very important in Switzerland and if you go away from that, you are risking a lot to become a footballer.
"But when I started playing football in Italy, I realised where football might take me because whereas the emphasis in Switzerland is on education, in the Italian structure, football is everything.
"This Swiss team is young. With the European Championship being in Switzerland, there will be pressure and expectation on us from within, so we have to play games like this against England as if it is a competitive match in order to understand what level we are at. To play England at Wembley is a dream."
A dream that a young boy in a war zone didn't dare to believe.

Yes you are correct Kosovars dont consider them self Albanians. I know that first hand Cause my wife was born in Mitrovica in Kosovo. But that article is correct thats why alot of footballers dont play for their Nation of birth in the Former Yugoslavia.
We even have a bosnian playing for the singapoore national team. We are every where.

We also recently lost Asmir Begovic, Portsmouth goalkeeper to Canada
Asmir has all the attributes, and has been touted by Portsmouth goalkeeping coach David Coles as being capable of becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
On 14 August 2007 Begovic received his first call-up to the senior Canadian squad for the friendly match with Iceland
